In treating diseases, one must first seek the root cause, and then treat the symptoms. Carbuncles, sores, and various ulcers, although manifesting on the exterior, originate from internal heat. Initially, there is a sensation of obstruction in the meridians and stagnation of Qi and Blood, leading to signs of sores and ulcers. At this stage, when heat pathogens are just beginning to arise, Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi have not yet been severely impeded, and muscles have not yet swollen. During the period when swelling has occurred but has not yet ulcerated or putrefied, it is particularly suitable to employ methods that disperse wind-heat.
Formulas
Huanglian Duhuo San (Coptis and Angelica Decoction): Treats back carbuncles and all kinds of malignant sores. When initially developed with severe swelling, taking three or four doses will lead to resolution.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1.5 qian), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 0.5 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 0.5 qian), Bencao (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Ku Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1.5 qian), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 0.5 qian), Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix body, 3 qian), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 qian, soaked and washed in wine), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 1 qian, soaked and washed in wine), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum, 3 qian), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1.5 qian), Fangfengshao (Saposhnikoviae Radix tip, 0.5 qian, soaked and washed in wine), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 0.5 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 0.5 qian), Sumu (Sappan Lignum, 0.5 qian), Gancaoshen (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma body, 1.15 qian, use sufficient root portion, roasted), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1.5 qian), Dangguishao (Angelicae Sinensis Radix tip, 0.5 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 1 qian), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 0.7 qian), Gancaoshao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma tip, 0.5 qian), Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 0.5 qian). The above herbs are coarsely chopped. Prepare as a single dose. Add one bowl of water, decoct until five-fifths remains. Add half a cup of good wine. Take before retiring. Re-decoct the dregs and take in divided doses until recovery.
Han Shui Shi Gao (Halloysitum and Gypsum Powder): Treats all carbuncles, back carbuncles, and malignant sores where heat toxins are fierce and abnormal, attacking muscles causing redness, unbearable pain and swelling, whether suppuration is impending or established, and for wind-toxin heat in joints threatening to form abscesses. This formula causes internal resolution.
Han Shui Shi (Halloysitum, 2 liang), Yangti Gen (Rumicis Tatarici Radix, 1 liang, chopped), Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, 3 liang), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Bailian (Paeoniae Albae Radix, 0.3 qian), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 0.3 qian), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 0.3 qian, skin and umbilicus removed), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang, whiskers removed), Yubai Pi (Ulmus Alba Cortex, 0.3 qian, chopped), Mangcao (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis, 0.3 qian), Chi Xiaodou (Phaseoli Semen Rubrum, 1 he), Hanfangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 1 liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 0.3 qian), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, raw and chopped). The above are ground into a fine powder. For each use, mix with one he of raw honey and one he of Rehmannia juice to form a paste. Spread on raw silk and apply. Change when dry. Continue until swelling subsides.

Grind into fine powder, make pills with honey the size of wutong seeds. Take 5 pills with warm water. If no purgative effect, increase to 4-5 pills. After initial effective purgation, gradually reduce dosage until slight loose stool is achieved. Adjust according to age and condition. Stop when swelling subsides and body harmony is restored. Discharge of yellow fluid and wrinkling/discoloration of the swollen area indicate efficacy. All swellings resolve internally after reduction. Effect is miraculous. Avoid hot noodles, garlic, pork, arrowhead shoots, fish, seaweed, Chinese cabbage, cold/raw foods, and sticky foods.
Painong Neixiao San (Suppuration-Expelling Internal-Resolution Powder): Treats carbuncles and back carbuncles. Invigorates blood, expels pus, detoxifies, and resolves redness and swelling internally.
