The appearance of corneal pannus (a membrane-like lesion covering the eyeball) is caused by the imbalance of deficiency and excess in the Qi and Blood of the Zang-Fu organs, compounded by Wind pathogen and Phlegm-Fluid retention. These stagnate above the diaphragm. After prolonged steaming and steaming, they finally surge and manifest in the eyes.
*Longmu Lun* (Treatise on Dragon and Wood) records: "Black Pupil Bead Exogenous Obstruction." When this eye disease first occurs, sudden severe pain that is unbearable arises, accompanied by tearing and inability to open the eyes. A membrane like a bead appears on the black pupil (cornea/pupil area). If it affects adults, it indicates exhaustion of both Liver and Kidney, with toxic Wind entering the eyes. For such conditions, acupuncture or physical manipulation should not be used; instead, *Bushen Wan* (Kidney-Tonifying Pill) is suitable. If it affects children, it is considered acute excess-heat Ji-Guan (a type of pediatric ophthalmic disease), and only *Lingyang Jiao Yinzi* (Antelope Horn Decoction) is appropriate.
The verse says: Black beads are arranged among the black water (pupil), and only skilled physicians know the difficulty. It is extremely difficult to reverse it with divine eye drops, but taking decoctions or pills brings peace. Do not force viewing or finger manipulation, lest heavy hands cause green saliva to flow. Encountering doctors who pick, manipulate, burn, and moxa makes the path to seeing the three lights (vision) even harder.
"Ice Flaw Deep Exogenous Obstruction." When this eye disease first occurs, there may be itching or pain, with irregular intervals of onset. During attacks, the eyes are red and dry, with tearing and discharge, causing a membrane to stand horizontally on the black pupil, resembling a blue jade flaw, of varying sizes. Over time, it causes harm, completely damaging vision. This disease must not be picked, rubbed away, hooked, or cut. One must take *Chongwei San* (Leonurus Powder) to clear heat, combined with *Renshen Tang* (Ginseng Decoction), and apply *Tuibi Qingliang San* (Cloud-Dispelling Cooling Powder) for immediate effect.
The verse says: Blue flaws appear horizontally and vertically on the black pupil, with clouds appearing deep, few or many. Physicians observing carefully see this state; if the root goes deep into the bone, do not pick or rub. Old age worries about future deep troubles; clearing heat and wind drugs are best. Caution is needed in daily life; devote yourself to medical treatment with no other way.
Exogenous Obstruction arising after other diseases. When this eye disease first occurs, it may immediately become red and ulcerated, gradually growing a membrane invading the eye, potentially covering the pupil, resulting in blindness. The physician should carefully observe the center of the cloud; if it is not red or yellow, light can still be seen. Hooking, cutting, cauterization, and hot compresses are suitable, followed by applying *Lanyi San* (Rotting Cloud Powder) and taking *Xixin San* (Asarum Powder).
The verse says: After other diseases, the eyes gradually lose brightness. Initially feeling a slight membrane form, after a year the cloud becomes established. White spreads across the eye, and over time red and yellow appear.
Reverse and Forward Growth Exogenous Obstruction. When this eye disease first occurs, it is due to exhaustion of the Five Zang organs, with Wind-Heat rushing between the Liver and Diaphragm, gradually forming clouds. Some grow from top to bottom, others from bottom to top, named Reverse and Forward Obstructions. Hooking, cutting, cauterization, and hot compresses are also suitable. Apply medication to remove the halo membrane, then take *Bulao Renshen Wan* (Labor-Tonifying Ginseng Pill) and *Zhimu Yinzi* (Anemarrhena Decoction) for immediate effect.
The verse says: Generally, the eyes have clouds; one must know the difference between reverse and forward growth. Growth from top to bottom is reverse; even famous doctors' effects are slow. Stopping and passing days, the medicine arrives yet separates (indicating recurrence).
