The Lung governs the exterior and nourishes the skin and hair. If heat-toxin accumulates and lingers within the Lung organs for a long time without being dispersed, it will attack the exterior. Upon exposure to wind-cold, when the interstices (Cou Li) are open and loose, wind-pathogen lodges in the muscles, causing the true Qi to dissipate. The pathogenic factor runs parallel with the Defensive Qi (Wei Qi). Wind-heat combats each other, flowing through the skin, resulting in sores and pain; severely, itching and pain occur, and scratching leads to ulceration.
