Kidney Deficiency Cold Syndrome. The pulse at the left hand's Chi position, posterior to Shenmen, presents as Yin deficiency, which belongs to the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian pathology. The patient suffers from mental oppression, heaviness in the lower limbs, and foot swelling so severe that the feet cannot touch the ground. There is cutting pain in the waist and back, preventing flexion and extension. The calves are weak and small. The patient is highly sensitive to wind and cold, with cold hands and feet, shortness of breath, and scanty Qi. There is vexatious pain in the bone joints, knotted pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, dark complexion, empty ringing in both ears, dryness and emaciation of muscles and bones, slippery and frequent urination, distension and fullness in the lower abdomen, and Qi rushing upward to the chest pulling into the hypochondrium. Palpation reveals a floating, fine, and slippery pulse, or a Dai (knotted) pulse, intermittent absence of pulse, or pulses that occasionally fail to arrive. This is named Kidney Deficiency Cold Syndrome.
The Kidney is the root of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and the residence of Shen Jing (Spirit and Essence). If Kidney Qi is deficient, there will be an excess of Yin Qi and a deficiency of Yang Qi. Consequently, one may experience a sensation of the heart hanging empty, shortness of breath, distension and urgency in the lower abdomen, dim vision, hearing loss, soreness and pain in the waist and legs, fullness and oppression in the chest and heart, mood swings with excessive salivation, slippery and frequent urination, lethargy, and weakness. These are signs of Kidney Qi insufficiency.
If both the Kidney and Bladder are deficient, the pulse at the left Chi position posterior to Shenmen will show both Yin and Yang deficiency. The patient suffers from frequent and clear urination, heart pain accompanied by coldness in the back, and frequent distension in the lower abdomen.
