Spleen is the official of granaries. Stomach is the sea of water and grain. When the Qi of both is vigorous, they can transform and transport food, nourishing blood and Qi. If Spleen and Stomach are weak, transformation and transportation become stagnant, causing fullness and distension in the chest, diaphragm, and epigastrium, with rebellious Qi ascending, leading to abdominal distension and indigestion of food and water. Thus, vomiting occurs and food cannot be retained. The treatment principle should be to regulate and tonify.
Formulas:
Shengwei Wan (Life-Nourishing Pill) [from *Ren Cun Fang*]: Treats insufficiency of Spleen and Stomach, excessive phlegm, rebellious vomiting, severe deficiency of dietary intake, and loss of appetite. This formula uses Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing), millet (Sumi), and yellow earth (Huangtu) as main ingredients. Because Nanxing awakens the Spleen, millet nourishes the Stomach, and Huangtu nourishes the Spleen; their nature and flavor are mild and harmonious, greatly tonifying the granaries. It is an essential agent for promoting appetite and resolving phlegm, truly a good prescription. It also treats abdominal and hypochondriac Qi distension, Qi masses, and accumulation stagnation.
Ingredients and preparation: Tian Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum, 4 liang): Wrap 4 liang of Tian Nan Xing in half a jin of true yellow earth mixed with pounded fresh ginger, slow-roast until fragrant, remove earth, slice, dry, and grind with other herbs. Su Mi (Millet, 1 sheng): Soak 1 sheng of millet with skin in natural juice extracted from 2 jin of fresh ginger, steam, dry, and grind. Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos, do not expose to fire); Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix); Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, prepared); Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, stir-fried); Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, stir-fried); Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove white pith); Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix); Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); Gu Ya (Sacchari Sinarum Germinatio, stir-fried); Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus); Bai Dou Kou (Cardamomi Fructus); Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, stir-fried, each 1 liang); Ban Xia Qu (Pinelliae Massa Praeparata, stir-fried, 2 liang); Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, do not expose to fire); Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each half liang); San Leng (Sparganii Rhizoma, 1.5 liang). Grind all into powder, make pills with warm water the size of mung beans. Take 70 pills per dose, washed down with light ginger soup, at any time. Another version without San Leng is named Shengwei Dan.
