All Qi disorders are attributed to the Lung. The Lung is located above the diaphragm, governs the movement of Yang Qi, and connects with respiration. In patients with Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption), the Lung is internally injured, leading to a deficiency of Yang Qi.
Consequently, symptoms such as weak respiration and shortness of breath insufficient for inhalation occur. Treatment should focus on tonifying the Lung organ to unblock and promote Yang Qi.
Formula: Huangqi Tang (Astragalus Decoction) [from *Shenghui Fang*], treats Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) with Sha Qi (Shortness of Breath), sallow complexion, emaciated limbs, abdominal and hypochondriac fullness and oppression, decreased appetite, and progressive weakness and fatigue. It is suitable for use.
Ingredients: Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang, crushed), Xuduan (Dipsaci Caulis), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 3 qian), Shu Gan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (each 3 qian), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) (root removed, crushed), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Helilepi (Terminalia Chebulae Pericarpium) (each 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (3 qian, rhizome removed), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 5 qian), Bai Fuling (Poria) (each 1 liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (each 1 liang, processed, peel and placenta removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian, honey-fried until slightly reddish and crushed), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (heart removed, baked, 1.5 liang), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (1 liang, sprouts removed), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (3 qian, soaked in water, white pith removed, baked).
