Shengma Decoction (No. 139) Used to dissipate rash toxins.
Ingredients: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, remove rootlets), Gegen (Puerariae Radix, remove bark, each 1 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, soaked in wine, 2 qian), Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian).
Decoction and Administration: Add one zhan of water, decoct until five fen remains. Take slightly cool after meals, adjusting dosage according to the patient's size.
My Note: This formula is identical to Shengma Gegen Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Kudzu Root Decoction). The syndrome of measles mostly belongs to Fire-Toxin of the Yangming channel. Whenever one wishes to release the exterior and scatter pathogens, this formula is most suitable for cases with Excess-Interior and strong pathogenic factors. However, I believe that using Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) instead of Shengma yields a more excellent effect. In cases where Qi and Blood are slightly deficient while pathogens remain unresolved, Chaigui Yin (Bupleurum and Angelica Decoction) is the most appropriate choice.
Shengma Tou Ban Tang (No. 140) Treats early-stage rashes (red spots appearing within one to three days).
Ingredients: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried, each 5 fen), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1.5 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, each 1 qian), Gange (Kudzu Root), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria, each 7 fen), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 4 fen).
Decoction and Administration: Add one slice of fresh ginger and one zhong of water, decoct until five fen remains. Divide into ten-plus doses and take slowly.
Gegen Maidong San (No. 141) Treats infantile heat-toxin macules and rashes accompanied by headache, high fever, and mental restlessness.
Ingredients: Gegen (Puerariae Radix, 3 qian), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 4 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 2 qian), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, half liang), Chi Shaoyao (Red Paeoniae Radix, 1 qian).
Decoction and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Take 3 qian per dose, add one large zhan of water, decoct until six fen remains. Take warm slowly at any time, adjusting dosage based on the child's age and size.
Mr. Xue said: The preceding formula consists of herbs for the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel; it expels exterior pathogens externally, clears Stomach fire internally, and supplements Original Qi. It should not be used unless there is fever with thirst and heat in both interior and exterior.
In cases where both exterior and interior are deficient yet accompanied by fever and thirst, Ren Shen Maidong San (Ginseng and Ophiopogon Powder) is indicated.
(Wan's) Maidong Tang (No. 142) Treats exterior pathogens with internal heat, especially severe coughing. This formula is the same as the preceding one but without Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), with slight differences in dosages.
