Fire Category, Earth Category (Refers to medicinal materials or therapies utilizing fire or belonging to the Earth element)
Indications: Carbuncles and back sores (severe purulent infections of the back) that are flat and do not rise; necrotic flesh that does not rot; as well as yin sores, scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck), liuzhu (multiple deep-seated abscesses), and stubborn ulcers. Usage: Extinguish the flame. (Sun-dry twice.)
Before ulceration:
Has the effect of drawing out toxins and relieving pain.
After ulceration:
Has the effects of supplementing and connecting Yang Qi, removing necrotic tissue, and generating new muscle. All tonifying medicines and ointments should be decocted using this type of fire. However, moxa direct moxibustion should be avoided to prevent damaging the skin. (Zhu Zhenheng stated: Fire can facilitate unblocking and draining, drawing out stagnant toxins; this is a method of "treating in accordance with" (Congzhi). Li Shizhen stated: Mulberry wood can benefit joints and nourish body fluids. When ignited, it draws out toxic vapors and expels wind-cold, thereby enabling the removal of necrotic tissue and generation of new tissue. Baopuzi stated: All immortal medicines are ineffective unless decocted with mulberry wood. The mulberry tree is the essence of the Ji Star, capable of assisting medicinal potency, eliminating wind-cold bi-syndrome and various pains. Long-term use prevents wind diseases for life.)
Oak charcoal fire: Suitable for refining various mineral and metallic drugs.
Charcoal fire: Suitable for decocting, roasting, and baking various pills and powders. (Li Shizhen stated: Burning wood into charcoal; wood rots over time, but charcoal buried in soil does not rot because wood possesses a "living nature," whereas charcoal lacks it. Funeral practitioners use charcoal to prevent insects and ants from entering, allowing bamboo and wood roots to regenerate naturally, also due to its lack of living nature.)
Suitable for decocting all kinds of tonifying medicines. (Li Shizhen stated: Regarding the administration of herbal decoctions, even if the ingredients are of superior quality and processed correctly, if the person decocting is careless, the water and fire are improper, or the heat control is inaccurate, the medicine will be ineffective. Observe how the quality of tea flavor and the taste of rice depend on the success or failure of water and fire cooking. Therefore, decocting requires careful and experienced individuals, using deep pots sealed tightly, fresh water, and active fire. Start with strong fire (Wu Huo) then switch to mild fire (Wen Huo). Administer according to method, and there will be no ineffectiveness. For fuel, dried reeds and dead bamboo are chosen for their mild heat, which does not damage medicinal potency. Mulberry wood fire is chosen for its ability to assist medicinal potency. Charcoal fire is chosen for its slow heat. Oak charcoal fire is chosen for its intense heat. For warming and nourishing, bran, horse manure, and cow manure are used for their warmth, ensuring the medicinal potency spreads evenly.)
Treats pediatric convulsive disease (Jing Feng), including coma, spasms, and upward deviation of eyes. Also treats head wind causing distending pain. Observe the areas where collaterals on the head, forehead, and temples are prominent. Dip rush pith (Jiedixin) in sesame oil, light it, and cauterize the affected area. This is effective. External hemorrhoids with swelling and pain can also be treated by cauterization. Oil dispels wind and resolves toxicity; fire unblocks meridians. For newborns who are near death due to exposure to cold qi, do not cut the umbilical cord immediately. Quickly wrap them in heated cotton wadding. Heat the placenta, place the lamp wick below the navel, and roast it back and forth. The warm qi enters the abdomen, Qi returns, and consciousness recovers spontaneously. Dispelling wind and reducing redness is very effective. (Li Shizhen stated: Only lamps lit with sesame oil and perilla seed oil can brighten the eyes and treat diseases. The smoke from other types of oil lamps damages the eyes and does not treat diseases.)
