Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians.
Descends rebellious Qi, calms asthma, digests food, and removes distension. Descends turbidity, unblocks bowels, thereby pacifying the Middle Jiao (Central Palace). When raw and ground, it can induce vomiting of wind-phlegm; when mixed with vinegar, it can dissipate toxic swellings.
Danxi said: "Radish seed has the merit of pushing down walls and toppling battlements in treating phlegm, indicating its fierce nature." Note that for those with deficiency, taking it may make breathing difficult due to shallow Qi.

Bitter in flavor, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians. Best used with wine.
Treats hot dysentery, warm malaria, bloody hemorrhoids, hernia, and abdominal masses. Also treats goiter, alopecia, sores, epistaxis, and toothache.
Zhongjing uses Baitouweng Tang (Peony Root Decoction) to treat hot dysentery, adding Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Qinpi (Ash Bark) for simultaneous use.
Dongyuan said: "The Kidney desires firmness; urgently eat bitter substances to firm it. Dysentery involves deficiency of the Lower Jiao. Therefore, this purely bitter agent is used to firm it."
Note that this substance remains still when there is wind and sways when there is no wind, which is also peculiar.
Bitter and astringent in flavor, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Liver, Gallbladder, and Large Intestine meridians. Hostile to Evodia Fruit.
Clears the intestines and dispels dampness, specifically treating hot dysentery. It is also suitable for internal use or external washing to treat eye diseases.
Since this herb possesses astringent properties, it is also used for cases of clear and thin leukorrhea.
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians. Avoid exposure to fire.
Descends the highest Qi, like a stone thrown into water. Relieves the urgency of tenesmus, like a steed chasing the wind. It collects malaria and phlegm-stagnation, and is selected for both Hong Kong foot (gout/athlete's foot) and expelling parasites.
The Foot Yangming is the sea of water and grain; the Hand Yangming is the palace of transmission. These two meridians connect and transmit to transform and transport refined essences. Disease in these two meridians leads to the generation of phlegm accumulation and parasite stagnation. Pungency can break stagnation, and bitterness can kill parasites, thus it governs the aforementioned conditions.
Betel nut sinks all Qi, reaching the lowest extremity. For those with Qi deficiency and sinking, it should be avoided.
