(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Names] Li Shizhen states: This spring water emerges from the crevices of rocks and soil in mountain cliffs, flowing to form streams. The *Erya* states: A spring that flows vertically upward is called "Lanquan" (Overflowing Spring); a spring that hangs and flows down is called "Woquan" (Pouring Spring); a spring that flows obliquely is called "Quan" (Oblique Spring). Such springs have distant sources and cold, clear water quality; if the mountains contain jade or fine vegetation, the water is considered good; however, if the mountains contain black soil, toxic stones, or noxious plants, it should not be used. Lu Yu stated: Water from cascades and turbulent rapids, if consumed, causes neck diseases.
Ying stated: In Xunyang, hundreds of horses suddenly died in the city one day. Upon inquiry, it was said that rain a few days prior washed toxins from snakes and insects out of the valleys, and the horses drank this contaminated water.
[Flavor and Nature] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] For cholera with restlessness, vomiting, abdominal emptiness, and muscle spasms (tetany) fearing ascent into the abdomen, drink abundantly. This is termed "washing the intestines." Do not let the abdomen feel empty; if it does, take more. People are often afraid of this, but trials show it is effective. However, for those with cold bodies and weak strength, care must be taken to prevent internal coldness; use discretion based on individual condition. (Cited from Zang Qi)
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Indications] Toxic, can cause death. Used to wash various sores and ulcers, leading to healing. (Cited from Zang Qi)
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Collection and Explanation] Zang Qi states: This is stagnant water found in earthenware jars within ancient tombs. Clear,澄 (clear), and long-stored water is preferred. Ancient texts say: "Sugarcane retains its nodes, melon rinds resemble rhino horn," meaning these items do not rot, while others decompose into water.
[Flavor and Nature] Pungent, neutral, slightly toxic.
[Indications] For "ghost qi," sudden evil invasion, chronic infectious diseases (zhu wu), heart and abdominal pain, nightmares, and spiritual disturbances; kills roundworms. Take one he (a unit of volume); do not drink excessively as it may cause chest stuffiness. It is also said that washing eyes with this water allows one to see ghosts, though this has not been tested. [Attached Prescriptions] New Prescription 1. Dysphagia (Yie Ji): Drink water from jars in ancient tombs; recovery is immediate and highly effective. (From *Shouyu Fang*)
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Collection and Explanation] Zang Qi states: This refers to small springs in marshes containing red snakes. If encountered by humans, the water is collected after rain for consumption.
[Flavor and Nature] Slightly toxic.
[Indications] For jia syndrome (abdominal masses due to qi stagnation), various jia conditions, poisonous insects entering the abdomen, and sores caused by snake bites. (Cited from Zang Qi)
