Sweet in taste, neutral and slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It treats internal bleeding in the heart and abdomen, severe fatigue manifesting as chills resembling malaria, pain in the waist and abdomen, soreness and pain in the four limbs, downward flow of blood in women, and calms the fetus. For men, it treats lower abdominal pain, deficiency consumption with emaciation, insufficiency of Yin Qi, soreness of the legs making prolonged standing difficult, and nourishes Liver Qi. Long-term use makes the body light and benefits Qi. Also known as Fuzhi Jiao (Fu Zhi Glue). Produced in Dongping Commandery, made by boiling cowhide. (Originates from Dong'e. Detested by Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), effective when processed with fire.)
Originating from Dong'e, hence named Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin). Currently, it can be produced in the capital; the hides used vary from old to young, and the resulting gelatin varies in clarity. There are generally three types: those that are clear and thin are used for calligraphy and painting; those that are thick and clear are named Penfu Jiao (Basin-inverted Gelatin) and used for medicinal purposes. When used medicinally, they must all be roasted over fire; for pills and powders, they must be extremely dry; for decoctions, slight roasting suffices. Those that are turbid and black [Text gap/error in source, proceeding to next section which describes Goose Fat/Gu]:
Treats sudden deafness in the ears; apply into the ear. Feathers: treat Shegong (Arrow Bug) poison and water toxicity. Meat: neutral in nature, promotes the free flow of the Five Zang Organs.
Dongchuan has much stream toxicity; raising geese can ward it off. The feathers are also excellent. Those injured by Shegong poison drink goose blood and smear it on their bodies. Geese may not necessarily eat Shegong insects, but rather subdue them through their aura/authority. Some say geese do not eat living worms, yet now goslings also eat earthworms. Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Treats wind strike, muscle spasms and stiffness, hemiplegia, and obstructed Qi flow. Long-term use promotes the growth of hair, eyebrows, and beard, benefits Qi, prevents hunger, makes the body light, and enhances longevity. Also known as Yanfang (Goose Fat). Produced in the ponds and marshes of Jiangnan. Can be collected at any time.
The Classic of Poetry states: "The large one is called Hong, the small one is called Yan." Current species of wild geese also vary in size, sharing the same general shape. Additionally, there is a wild goose larger than the Yan, resembling the domestic Cang Goose, called Jiaye. People rarely eat Yanfang itself, but its meat should be good. "Fang" is pronounced like "Mu," referring to wild ducks. Currently, this name "Yanfang" implies that Yan (Wild Geese) and Ya (Ducks) are similar. Matters regarding ducks are noted separately later. Wild geese inhabit rivers and lakes, and during summer nesting, they migrate north. Perhaps people north of Yanmen do not eat this bird, which is why it is valued in the Central Plains. Although it can be collected at any time, winter is best. (Xinxiu Bencao Vol. 230, Daguan Bencao Vol. 19, Zhenghe Bencao p. 400)
