Dahuang Huo (calcined Gypsum) combined with Hupo (Amber) and Huashi (Talcum) is a key medicine for treating Shilin (Stone Lin, a type of strangury characterized by the passage of stones). However, it is only suitable for patients with strong constitution and early-stage disease. (*Yitong*)
Pugongying (Dandelion) is a common herb for treating Lin syndrome. Although various materia medica texts do not explicitly mention its efficacy in treating Lin, clinical practice proves it to be very effective. (*Bencao Bei Yao*)
**Formulas for Percolation and Drainage**
**Ejiao Tang (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Decoction)**: If blood appears in the urine and pain occurs with each urination, this is caused by heat lingering in the Heart Qi, clashing with the Small Intestine. Since the Heart governs Blood, when exposed to heat, the blood scatters and渗 (seeps) into the Pao (Bladder). If the Heart pulse is found to be large, scattered, and rapid, it is called Xuelin (Blood Lin), and this Ejiao Tang is appropriate. If there is pain in the lower abdomen but no astringency, it is neither Heat nor Lin; rather, it is caused by Shock Qi invading the Heart, causing Heart Qi to scatter and Blood to have no place to reside. The pulse would be found to be Ru (Soggy) and Ruo (Weak). In such cases, Diyú Yinzi (Sanguisorba Decoction) is appropriate (formula follows later).
Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Alisma), Huashi (Talcum) (each 4 fen), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed) (2 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add 2 zhan of water, decoct until 1 zhan remains, remove the dregs, and take warm. Administer at any time. (*Jifeng*) (Note: This formula is specifically designed for Xuelin. However, Zhuling Tang is actually the premier formula for treating Lin syndromes, so it is listed first.)
**Tongshen San (Divine Spirit Powder)**: Treats urinary obstruction and blockage, hardness and knotting below the umbilicus, burning sensation in urination as if scattering fire, or transformation into Shishilin (Stone Stone Lin).
Baifuling (White Poria) (3 qian), Zexie (Alisma) (3 qian), Mu Zhu Ling (Wild Polyporus) (0.5 liang, remove black skin), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (2 qian), Huashi (Talcum) (5 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root) (2 qian), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) (1 qian, remove rough bark).
Grind the above seven herbs into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mix with boiling water. Drink plenty of hot water afterwards (2-3 zhan); increased urination indicates efficacy. (*Shengxiao*)
**Ershen San (Two Divine Herbs Powder)**: Treats acute pain in various Lin syndromes.
Huangse Haijinsha (Yellow Golden Sand) (7.5 qian), Huashi (Talcum) (0.5 liang).
Grind into a fine powder. Take 2.5 qian per dose, decoct with Dengxin (Juncus Effusus), Mutong (Akebia Stem), and Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber) in fresh water, and take mixed with honey. (*Zhizhi*) (Note: This originates from the *Youyou Xinshu*, a formula by Mr. Wang Handong, originally named Rusheng San, taking equal parts, decocted in Dengxin water.) *Defa Ji*
**Haijinsha San (Golden Sand Powder)**: Treats Gaolin (Gauze/Chalky Lin). Add Gancao (Licorice Root) to this base formula, and administer with Maimendong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction).
**Pengsha San (Borax Powder)**: Treats acute pain in Shashilin (Sand-Stone Lin).
Pengsha (Borax) (finely ground), Hupo (Amber), Chi Fuling (Red Poria), Shuhuaizi (Malva Seed), Chen Jupi (Aged Tangerine Peel, white pith retained) (equal parts).
Grind into powder. Take 2.5 qian per dose, decoct with 2 green onion heads, 21 grains of heart-extracted Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and 2 spoons of honey in fresh water to extract clear juice, then take mixed. Alternatively, soak in mung bean water, grind with the peel to extract clear juice, and take mixed. (*Zhizhi*)
**Formula for Shashilin (Sand-Stone Lin)**.
Heidou (Black Soybean) (120 grains), Fencǎo (Powdered Licorice) (1 cun, raw and chopped).
Decoct in fresh water. While hot, mix in 1 qian of Huashi (Talcum) powder. Take on an empty stomach. (*Zhizhi*)
For adults and children suffering from Shashilin, or the five types of Lin causing astringency and Longbi (urinary retention), accompanied by abdominal pain, Yiyuan San (Beneficial Element Powder) is the primary treatment, taken with long-flowing water. This is because heat in the Bladder has dried up the body fluids. (*Zhifa Zalun*) *Xiuozhen Fang* cites Zhang Zihe treating sudden Lin pain, adding Huixiang (Fennel). *Yuanrong* adds Zhizi (Gardenia) for Lin.
Secret Formula: Treats pain in the urethra from Sha Lin. Relief is achieved only after the sand is expelled.
Shishouyu Naogu (Fish Head Bone, calcined) (10 pieces), Huashi (Talcum) (2.5 qian), Hupo (Amber) (3 fen).
Grind into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct Mutong (Akebia Stem) and take on an empty stomach. (*Tongzhi*)
(Note: This formula also appears in *Zhengchuan*, without Amber.)
**Formulas for Clearing and Purging**
*Duanju Fang*'s Difuk Tang (Note: *Qianjin Fang* calls it Difuzi Tang) treats various stagnant heats in the Lower Jiao, red and yellow urine, frequent small-volume urination, severe pain, or hematuria. It is a formula that unblocks all types of Lin upon ingestion.
Difucǎo (Kochia Herb) (3 liang, Note: *Qianjin Fang* uses Difuzi/Kochia Fruit), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Zhuling (Polyporus, remove skin), Qumai (Dianthus Herb), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith) (each 2 liang), Haizao (Sargassum Thallus) (1 liang), Kuizi (Malva Seed) (1 sheng), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) (2 liang, stir-fried).
Cut the above ten herbs. Decoct in 9 sheng of water until 3 sheng remain. Divide into three doses. If both stool and urine are blocked, add Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) 3 liang. (*Waitai Miyao*)
**Wulin San (Five Lin Powder)**: Treats insufficiency of Kidney Qi, Heat in the Bladder, obstruction of the Water Dao (Urinary Pathway), dribbling and incomplete voiding, small volume but frequent urination, urgent abdominal pain, episodic attacks triggered by fatigue, urine resembling bean curd dregs or sand/stones.
Shanzhiziren (Gardenia Seed, stir-fried) (14 liang), Danzhuye (Light Bamboo Leaf) (4 liang), Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root), Fuling (Poria, remove skin, each 0.5 jin), Shanyinchén (Artemisia Capillaris), Mutong (Akebia Stem, remove joints), Gancao (Licorice Root, stir-fried), Huashi (Talcum) (each 4 liang).
Pulverize and sieve into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until 0.8 zhan remains. Take on an empty stomach. (*Heji Ju Fang*) (Note: The original formula uses Fuling, Danggui, Gancao, Zhizi, Shaoyao – five herbs. Also, Daochi Wan is similar to this.)
*Fangmai Zhengzong* treats Wulin and Red/White Turbidity: Mutong (Akebia Stem), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), Haijinsha (Golden Sand) each 2 qian; Gancao (Licorice Root), Fuling (Poria), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) each 1 qian; 50 Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaves), 50 Dengxin (Juncus Effusus). Decoct in water. Before taking, add 10 tea spoons of Bai Guo Juice (Ginkgo Nut Juice). (*Huiyan*)
**Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction)**: Treats Damp-Heat in the Liver Meridian, swelling and pain of the genitals, abdominal pain, or astringent/difficult urination.
Longdancao (Gentiana Root, stir-fried with wine), Zexie (Alisma) (each 1 qian), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed, stir-fried), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Root, soaked in wine), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, soaked in wine), Shanzhi (Gardenia, stir-fried), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, stir-fried), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 5 fen).
Decoct in water and take. (*Zhunseng*)
For internal and external Zhu Gan (flesh-eating ulcers) with fever and astringent urination, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is appropriate, added with Longdancao (Gentiana Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed). (*Chuayang Jingquan Quanshu*)
For internal and external Zhu Gan sores, and all urinary diseases.
Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) (2 qian), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) (2 qian), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Rhizome) (1 qian), Huashi (Talcum) (2 qian).
Decoct in water. If urination is astringent and painful, add Gancaojie (Licorice Joint) and Puhuang (Lycopodium Spore). (Same source)
**Ge Fen Wan (Kudzu Starch Pill)**: Treats painful Lin in men and women, with rapid effect. Do not neglect it.
Shatang (Sugar) (*Bencao* states: treats Heat in Heart, Lungs, Large Intestine), Gefen (Kudzu Starch).
Mix into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Dissolve 1-2 pills in Jinghua Shui (well water drawn at dawn). (*Bencao Gangmu*)
**Formulas for Purging Downwards** (See also formulas for Blood disorders)
*Guangji Fang* treats Re Lin (Heat Lin).
Cheqiancao (Plantago Herb, chopped) (1 sheng), Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith, chopped, 3 liang), Kuigen (Malva Root, chopped) (1 sheng), Mangxiao (Mirabilite) (6 fen, add when decoction is ready).
Decoct the above four herbs in 7 sheng of water until 2 sheng remain. Strain and remove dregs, add Mangxiao. Divide into three warm doses. Space doses apart by the time it takes to walk 6-7 li. Stop if mild diarrhea occurs. Avoid hot food. (*Waitai Miyao*)
*Lingwan Fang* treats the five types of Lin: Laolin (Fatigue Lin), Xuelin (Blood Lin), Qilin (Qi Lin), Relin (Heat Lin), Shilin (Stone Lin), and severe urinary obstruction, using Touge San (Penetrating Obstruction Powder). Use Xiaoshi (Niter) 1 liang, pure white without soil impurities, raw-ground to fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose. For different Lin types, use the following guiding liquids:
Laolin (Fatigue Lin): Triggered by fatigue and deficiency, inability to urinate, urgent lower abdominal pain. Take with Kui Zi (Malva Seed) decoction. After unblocking, must take Bu Xu (Tonify Deficiency) pills/powders. (Note: Symptoms described here generally match *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun*).
Xuelin (Blood Lin) and Relin (Heat Lin): Mix with cold water.
Qilin (Qi Lin): Warm mix with Mutong (Akebia Stem) decoction.
Shilin (Stone Lin): Stir-fry the powder in a pot over paper until the paper burns, re-grind finely, mix with warm water.
Urinary Obstruction: Take with Wheat decoction.
Sudden onset of various Lin: Mix with cold water. Take on an empty stomach first to dissipate the medication like water, then follow with decoction. If other medicines fail, this one brings immediate cure. (*Bencao*)

Puxiao (Saltpeter), Haijinsha (Golden Sand), Zaojiao (Tamarisk Pod, burnt to retain nature).
Grind the above three herbs into equal parts fine powder. Take mixed with rock sugar and well water. (*Jingyan Liangfang*)
Wonderful formula for Lin and Turbidity: Ya Zao (Toothed Tamarisk), Huashi (Talcum), Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf), Dengxin (Juncus Effusus), Pixiao (Saltpeter, small amount). Place in hot water, leave exposed overnight. Warm and drink the next morning. (*Jishi Quanshu*)
