Excess annual movements belong to innate constitution, representing years of excess. These correspond to Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, and Ren. (These are five Yang-gang years.)
In the six Jia years: (Jia and Ji transform into Earth.) Jia is Yang-gang Earth. Excess Earth is called "Dun" (dense/thick) and "Fu" (high/mound). The transformation of all things relies on Earth to complete them. Earth is inherently high and dense; in nature, it manifests as misty dust over mountains and rivers, which is the Qi of Earth. Rain and dampness circulate. (When dampness generates, dryness retreats.) The transformation of Earth is dampness. When Earth overcomes Water, the Kidney is affected by pathogenic factors. Treatment should focus on draining dampness and tonifying the Kidney. The Spleen belongs to Earth. In severe cases, with excess Earth pathogen, the Spleen meridian suffers self-disease. The Spleen governs muscles and corresponds externally to the four limbs. Symptoms include muscle flaccidity, leg cramps during walking, (cramping/twitching,) and pain in the soles of the feet. Excess Spleen Qi causes inability to move the limbs. Spleen deficiency leads to abdominal borborygmus and undigested stool diarrhea (Sun Xie). Its virtue is dense and heavy, so its administration is quiet. Its movement is soft, moist, and muddy, (like wet mud.) Its changes involve shock and drifting accumulation, (thunderstorms and gales.) Collapse, (flood conflicts.) This represents the transformation where Earth reaches its extreme and is accompanied by Wood retaliation. The corresponding grains are Setaria italica (Ji) and Hemp (Ma). (Setaria is an Earth grain, Hemp is a Wood grain.) The corresponding fruits are Jujube (Zao) and Plum (Li). (Jujube is an Earth fruit, Plum is a Wood fruit.) The corresponding animals are Dog (Quan) and Ox (Niu). (Ox is an Earth animal, Dog is a Wood animal. Referring to orderly breeding.) The corresponding insects are Naked insects (Luo) and Hairy insects (Mao). (With excess Earth Qi, Naked and Hairy insects breed together.) Tai Xi (KI3) is the pulse point of the Kidney. When Earth Qi is hyperactive, Kidney Qi perishes; thus, death occurs and is untreatable.
In the six Bing years: (Bing and Xin transform into Water.) Bing is Yang-gang Water. Excess Water is known as the "Liu Yan" era. When Water overcomes, Yin Qi prevails greatly, heaven and earth close up, and all things are sealed and stored. Annual excess Water brings circulating Cold Qi, generating Cold diseases, and pathogens harm Heart Fire. The transformation of Water is Cold. When Water overcomes Fire, the Heart is affected. Treatment should focus on expelling Cold and tonifying the Heart. People suffer from fever, restlessness, palpitations, Yin-Jue (cold extremities), coldness throughout the upper, middle, and lower body, delirium, and heart pain. In severe cases, excess Water pathogen affects the Kidney meridian itself. Kidney disease presents as abdominal distension, calf swelling, asthma/cough, heavy body, and nocturnal sweating. Its virtue is condensed, bleak, and cold, (appearance of snow and rain.) Its movement involves floating, (floating upwards,) discharge/diarrhea, (discharging upwards,) irrigation, (pouring,) and surging/overflowing, (spilling.) Its changes (non-seasonal occurrences are called Bian) include ice, snow, frost, and hail. The disease is distension, (excess Water Qi.) Its image corresponds to Winter, its Qi is firm/hard. The corresponding grains are Soybean (Dou) and Setaria italica (Ji). (Soybean is a Water grain, Setaria is an Earth grain.) The corresponding fruits are Chestnut (Li) and Jujube (Zao). The corresponding animals are Pig (Zhi) and Ox (Niu). (Pig is a Water animal, Ox is an Earth animal.) The corresponding insects are Scaled insects (Lin) and Naked insects (Luo). (With excess Water, Scaled and Naked insects breed.) Shen Men (HT7) is the pulse point of the Heart. When Water Qi is hyperactive, Heart Qi perishes; thus, it is untreatable.
In the six Wu years: (Wu and Gui transform into Fire.) Wu is Yang-gang Fire. Excess Fire is known as the "He Xi" era, characterized by intense sunlight and heat. Yang abundance means all things flourish; Yin Qi transforms internally, while Yang Qi nourishes externally. Yin descends below, Yang ascends above. People suffer from Yin injury due to Fire pathogen, alternating chills and fever, leading to Malaria. Fire overcomes Lung Metal, causing asthma and cough. Fire forces blood to flow recklessly upwards, causing bleeding from the mouth and nose. Downward discharge via urination and defecation results in watery diarrhea. Fire blazing in the Upper Jiao causes dry throat and deafness. Pain in the shoulders and back occurs. Its movement is scorching and chaotic disturbance, a harm of excessive Fire. Its virtue is warm, hot, and muggy, representing the propagation of Heat transformation, corresponding to Summer. Its changes are fierce boiling, a change of extreme heat due to excessive Fire Qi. Diseases include laughing malaria, sores/ulcers, bloody flow, mania, and red eyes, all due to Fire excess. If Fire fails to uphold its virtue and acts tyrannically, severe weather like rain, frost, and hail may occur, injuring Metal Qi. Water will then retaliate, causing such disasters. Conversely, Cold pathogen may harm the Heart. The corresponding grains are Wheat (Mai) and Soybean (Dou). (Wheat is a Fire grain, Soybean is a Water grain.) The corresponding fruits are Apricot (Xing) and Chestnut (Li). (Apricot is a Fire fruit, Chestnut is a Water fruit.) The corresponding animals are Sheep (Yang) and Pig (Zhi). (Sheep is a Fire animal, Pig is a Water animal. Referring to orderly breeding.) The corresponding insects are Feathered insects (Yu) and Scaled insects (Lin). (Feathered belong to Fire, Scaled belong to Water.) Tai Yuan (LU9) is the pulse point of the Lung. When Fire Qi is hyperactive, Lung Qi perishes; thus, death occurs and is untreatable.
In the six Geng years: (Yi and Geng transform into Metal.) Geng is Yang-gang Metal. Excess Metal is known as the "Jian Cheng" era, where all things contract, gather, and retreat. Annual excess Metal brings circulating Dryness Qi, generating Dryness diseases, and Liver Wood is affected. Treatment should focus on clearing dryness and tonifying the Liver. People suffer from pain in the hypochondrium and lower abdomen, red eyes, ulcers at the corners of the mouth, and hearing loss, all diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. Excessive Metal Qi causes severe desiccation, injuring the Liver meridian. If Liver Qi is insufficient, chest pain radiating to the back occurs, and downward distension in the hypochondrium makes turning difficult; this is Metal injuring the Liver. Excess Metal pathogen affects the Lung meridian itself, causing asthma, cough, rebellious Qi, and shoulder/back pain. Lung disease failing to generate Water leads to Kidney Yin pathology, causing pain in the sacrum, genitalia, thighs, knees, thighs, and feet. Its virtue is misty and dewy, representing clear and肃 (solemn) transformation. Its changes are desiccation and withering, executing killing orders. Its movement is violent fracture, (excess Metal Qi.) Ulcerative infections. (Skin diseases.) If Metal fails to uphold virtue and violently harms Wood, Fire will retaliate, injuring Metal. Diseases include wheezing and gasping, chest fullness requiring upright posture. Fire invading Lung Metal causes cough. The corresponding grains are Rice (Dao) and Foxtail millet (Shu). The corresponding fruits are Peach (Tao) and Apricot (Xing). The corresponding animals are Chicken (Ji) and Horse (Ma). The corresponding insects are Armored insects (Jie) and Feathered insects (Yu). Tai Chong (LR3) is the pulse point of the Liver. When Metal Qi is hyperactive, Liver Qi perishes; thus, death occurs and is untreatable.
In the six Ren years: (Ding and Ren transform into Wood.) Ren is Yang-gang Wood, spreading Yang harmony, symbolizing the generation of all things. When Wood Qi is harmonious and mutually generating, Yang harmony spreads, Yang Qi advances daily while Yin Qi retreats. Annual excess Wood transforms into Wind. Circulating Wind Qi generates Wind diseases. Wood overcoming Earth affects the Spleen organ. Treatment should soothe Liver Wood and tonify Spleen Earth. Excess Wood insulting Earth causes Metal to retaliate, resulting in autumn disasters. Regarding pathology, the pathogen actually harms the Liver. People suffer from undigested stool diarrhea, reduced appetite, weight loss, vexation, borborygmus, and abdominal/hypochondriac fullness, all due to Spleen deficiency and Qi decline. Wood excess and strong Liver cause irritability, dizziness, and head disorders. In severe cases, flank pain and severe vomiting occur. (Wood pathogen harms Stomach.) Its movement involves tremors, dizziness, and head disorders, (excess Wind-Wood.) Its virtue includes sounds, (Wind-Wood sounds,) spreading/scattering, (scattering,) and opening/breaking, (meaning revealing old to make way for new.) Its changes involve shaking, (anger,) pulling, (decay/breaking,) and uprooting. The corresponding grains are Hemp (Ma) and Rice (Dao). (Hemp is a Wood grain, Rice is a Metal grain.) The corresponding fruits are Plum (Li) and Peach (Tao). (Plum is a Wood fruit, Peach is a Metal fruit.) The corresponding animals are Chicken (Ji) and Dog (Quan). (Chicken is a Metal animal, Dog is a Wood animal.) The corresponding insects are Hairy insects (Mao) and Armored insects (Jie). Chong Yang (ST42) is the pulse point of the Stomach. When Wood Qi is hyperactive, Stomach Qi perishes; thus, death occurs and is untreatable.
Deficient annual movements belong to acquired fortune, representing years of deficiency. These correspond to Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, and Gui. (Five Yin years.)
In the six Ding years: (Ding and Ren transform into Wood.) Ding is Yin-soft Wood. Deficient Wood Qi is called the "Wei He" era. Yang harmony is constrained, and generative force is weak. Wood Qi declines, leaving Earth uncontrolled. Fire has nothing to generate, so Long Summer Qi remains flat. Wood deficiency allows Metal to overcome, so Contraction Qi arrives early. Annual Wood deficiency leads to massive Dryness Qi circulation, (Wood deficiency allows Metal to invade,) generating Dryness diseases. Generative Qi fails to administer, plants bloom but do not fruit, vegetation flowers late, cool rains fall frequently, wind and clouds arise. People suffer from central coldness, hypochondriac fullness, and lower abdominal pain. Metal Qi invading Wood is a Liver disease. Borborygmus and loose stools indicate Spleen cold due to Wood failing to generate Fire. Diseases include limb paralysis, carbuncles, sores, and ulcers. Wood injured by Metal affects Liver sinews; Wind pathogen causes terminal diseases, hence limb paralysis and skin lesions originate here. Its masters are flying pests, maggots, and pheasants. (Maggots turn into flies, preferring warmth, especially in Fire years. Pheasants are Fire birds; these reflect Fire retaliation principles.) Its Qi contracts, its function gathers, (Wood combines with Metal transformation, Contraction Qi prevails.) The corresponding grains are Setaria italica (Ji) and Rice (Dao). (Setaria is an Earth grain, Rice is a Metal grain. With Wood deficiency, both grains mature.) The corresponding fruits are Jujube (Zao) and Peach (Tao). (Jujube is an Earth fruit, Peach is a Metal fruit. With Wood deficiency, both fruits thrive.) The corresponding animals are Dog (Quan) and Chicken (Ji). (Dog is a Wood animal, Chicken is a Metal animal.) The corresponding insects are Hairy insects (Mao) and Armored insects (Jie). (Hairy are Wood insects, Armored are Metal insects.) Vegetation flowers late, (Wood deficiency.) Turns gray, dry, and withers. (Metal abundance.) Plants bloom and fill out, flesh becomes substantial. Although generative Qi is late, transformative Qi matures quickly. Yang Ming descends, Metal Qi clears and solemnizes, causing early white dew. Metal victory leads to Fire decline; Fire decline leads to Earth weakness. Insects eat sweet/yellow substances. Sweet/yellow belongs to Earth, eroded by Yin Qi, hence insects arise. (Observing that sunning removes worms shows worms are Yin entities.) Victory and retaliation stem from Wood, so disasters occur in Palace 3, East Zhen Palace.
In the six Yi years: (Yi and Geng transform into Metal.) Yi is Yin-soft Metal. Deficient Metal Qi is called the "Cong Ge" era. Annual Metal deficiency allows Fire Qi to prevail, causing major disasters and Heat diseases. Treatment should clear Lungs and descend Fire. People suffer from shoulder/back oppression/heaviness, nasal congestion/sneezing, (runny nose,) bloody stools/diarrhea. Metal receiving Fire pathogen causes these symptoms. Metal deficiency and Fire hyperactivity lead to Water retaliation, causing sudden cold rain, hail, frost, and snow, damaging all things—a Cold change. This is called "Fire without root," causing headache extending to the neck, fever, mouth ulcers, and heart pain. Intense flames bring ice/snow/hail, indicating Fire excess and Metal deficiency. Diseases include cough/asthma, nasal congestion/epistaxis. Fire excess harms the Lung. The corresponding grains are Hemp (Ma) and Wheat (Mai). (Hemp is a Wood grain, Wheat is a Fire grain. Both mature.) The corresponding fruits are Apricot (Xing) and Plum (Li). (Plum is a Wood fruit, Apricot is a Fire fruit. Metal deficiency allows both fruits to mature.) The corresponding animals are Chicken (Ji) and Sheep (Yang). (Chicken is a Metal animal, should be weak; Sheep is a Fire animal, should be strong.) The corresponding insects are Armored insects (Jie) and Feathered insects (Yu). (Armored are Metal insects, Feathered are Fire insects.) Victory and retaliation stem from Metal, so disasters occur in Palace 7, West Dui Palace.
In the six Ji years: (Jia and Ji transform into Earth.) Ji is Yin-soft Earth. Deficient Earth Qi is called the "Bei Jian" era. Wood Qi prevails, causing rampant Wind. Treatment should tonify Spleen and soothe Liver. Transformative Qi loses command; Wood monopolizes governance, making vegetation lush. Generation occurs in Wood, completion in Earth. Earth Qi does not surge, so plants bloom but do not fruit, form but do not mature. Earth virtue declines, causing delayed rains. Metal has nothing to generate, so Contraction Qi is balanced. People suffer from undigested stool diarrhea, cholera, heavy body, abdominal pain, trembling/repeated shaking of bones/joints, muscle soreness, and irritability. Hibernating insects attach early. All these diarrhea symptoms result from Spleen weakness and Liver strength. Earth deficiency and Wood excess cause Metal retaliation. (Son avenges mother's wrong.) Sudden chest/hypochondriac pain radiating to lower abdomen indicates Liver/Gallbladder disease. Earth organ disease presents as bubbling/foaming; tissue disease presents as ulcerated sores/carbuncles. Chest fullness/stuffiness indicates insufficient Earth Qi and Spleen failure to transport. Undigested stool diarrhea indicates Earth deficiency and Wind excess. The corresponding grains are Soybean (Dou) and Hemp (Ma). (Soybean is a Water grain, Hemp is a Wood grain. Both mature.) The corresponding fruits are Plum (Li) and Chestnut (Li). (Plum is a Wood fruit, Chestnut is a Water fruit. Earth deficiency allows both fruits to mature.) The corresponding animals are Ox (Niu) and Dog (Quan). (Ox is an Earth animal, should be weak; Dog is a Wood animal, should be strong.) The corresponding insects are Naked insects (Luo) and Hairy insects (Mao). (Naked belong to Earth, Hairy belong to Wood.) Victory and retaliation stem from Earth, so disasters appear in the Four Corners. Earth occupies the Central Palace but thrives in the four corners: Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei Earth.
In the six Xin years: (Bing and Xin transform into Water.) Xin is Yin-soft Water. Deficient Water Qi is called the "He Liu" era, meaning dried-up streams. In Six Xin Yin Water years, Yang acts instead. Water deficiency allows Wet Earth to invade, generating Dampness diseases. Treatment should tonify Kidney and drain Dampness. Water decline leads to Fire and Earth co-transformation, so Qi acts inversely, transformations speed up, and frequent summer rains occur. People suffer from abdominal fullness, heavy body, damp diarrhea, cold sores with fluid leakage, waist/hip pain, foot flaccidity and cold Jue, (Cold Jue,) sole pain, and severe edema. (Fu is same as Fu/swollen.) Visceral Qi (Water Qi) fails to hold, Kidney Qi lacks balance, (balance. Failure to hold and balance indicates Water Qi decline.) Fire has no fear, so hibernating insects do not hide. Vegetation grows vigorously, flourishing and abundant, Long Transformation Qi is rich and dense. Dust storms and sudden rain, (Earth overcomes Water,) cause shaking, pulling, and uprooting. (Wood retaliates against Earth.) Diseases include stranguria/retention, Kidney Qi failure to transform. Water deficiency allows pathogens to harm the Kidney. The corresponding grains are Broomcorn millet (Shu) and Setaria italica (Ji). (Shu is a Fire grain; Ji is an Earth grain. Both should mature. Shu is Fire grain, though this text says Mai/Wheat.) The corresponding fruits are Jujube (Zao) and Apricot (Xing). (Jujube is an Earth fruit, Apricot is a Fire fruit. Water deficiency allows both fruits to mature.) The corresponding animals are Pig (Zhi) and Ox (Niu). (Pig is a Water animal, should be weak; Ox is an Earth animal, should be strong.) The corresponding insects are Scaled insects (Lin) and Naked insects (Luo). (Scaled are Water insects, Naked are Earth insects. Strength/weakness applies similarly.) Victory and retaliation stem from Water, so disasters occur in Palace 1, North Kan Palace.
In the six Gui years: (Wu and Gui transform into Fire.) Gui is Yin-soft Fire. Deficient Fire Qi is called the "Fu Ming" era. Yang virtue is not manifest, light is hidden. Annual Fire deficiency allows Metal to invade, causing massive Cold Qi circulation and Cold diseases. Treatment should tonify Heart and expel Cold. Fire deficiency means organisms do not grow well; they form reality but remain immature, aging upon encountering transformation. Mature objects remain small and short; by the time Earth transformation commands arrive, their Qi is already aged. Yang Qi is suppressed, hibernating insects hide early, Yang does not act upon things. People suffer from chest pain, hypochondriac fullness, bilateral flank pain, pain between spine/back/shoulder blades and inner arms. Condensed bleakness and shivering cold, (Water overcomes Fire.) Heavy continuous rain, (Earth retaliates against Water.) Thunder and shock, (Fire depression reaches release.) Deep Yin excessive rain. (All are Damp retaliation changes.) Masters include ice, snow, frost, and cold; Water counter-overcomes. Diseases include confusion, sorrow, and forgetfulness, due to insufficient Fire and disintegration of Heart Spirit. The corresponding grains are Soybean (Dou) and Rice (Dao). (Soybean is a Water grain, Rice is a Metal grain. Both mature.) The corresponding fruits are Chestnut (Li) and Peach (Tao). (Chestnut is a Water fruit, Peach is a Metal fruit. Fire deficiency allows both fruits to mature.) The corresponding animals are Horse (Ma) and Pig (Zhi). (Horse is a Fire animal, should be weak; Pig is a Water animal, should be strong.) The corresponding insects are Feathered insects (Yu) and Scaled insects (Lin). (Feathered belong to Fire, Scaled belong to Water. With strength/weakness.) Prosperity and retaliation stem from Fire, so disasters occur in Palace 9, South Li Palace.
