The large intestine is affected by dryness-heat, leading to the withering of yin fluids within the zang organs, obstruction of qi mechanism in the intestines and stomach, and constipation. The primary treatment is Qingzao Runchang Tang (Clear Dryness and Moisten Intestine Decoction).
Qingzao Runchang Tang (Self-made Formula)
Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 3 qian) Shudi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 3 qian) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian) Huomaren (Cannabis Semen, 3 qian) Louren (Trichosanthis Semen, 4 qian)
Yuliren (Pruni Semen, 2 qian) Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, 3 qian) Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, 1 qian, stir-fried with honey water) Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 1.5 qian, stir-fried with honey water) Jinjubi (Fortunellae Fructus, 1 piece)
This formula uses Shengdi Huang, Shudi Huang, and the three seeds (Huomaren, Louren, Yuliren) as the main herbs to generate body fluids and moisten dryness, with a rapid effect in opening obstructions. Additionally, Dang Gui nourishes blood, and Shihu nourishes stomach yin. Qingpi and Zhiqiao are stir-fried with honey water to synergize with Jinjubi in circulating the qi of the lung and stomach. The lung and large intestine are exterior-interior partners; tonifying the zang organ must be accompanied by draining the fu organ, and draining the fu organ must consider nourishing the zang organ. This is the fundamental principle that zang and fu organs are connected and inseparable. (Zu Yi's annotation)
One may ask: Why are there no specific formulas for dryness-cold affecting the spleen, stomach, large intestine, and small intestine? The answer is: The stomach is the sea of water and grain, and the spleen is an earth organ that favors dampness. When autumn dryness-cold pathogenic factors invade, one does not fear dryness. Furthermore, *Jinkui Yaolue* states that those with cold in the large intestine often have loose stools, and those with cold in the small intestine experience heaviness in the lower abdomen and bloody stools. Therefore, it is appropriate not to establish specific formulas for dryness-cold for these organs. In our school's formulas, ten red dates are used in four scenarios involving liver dryness-heat/dryness-cold, spleen dryness-heat, and kidney dryness-cold. (Zu Yi's further annotation)
