(For warm epidemics, the same method applies. Summer-heat and latent summer-heat also follow this principle.)
At the initial stage of damp-warmth (Shiwen), symptoms include headache, aversion to cold, heaviness and pain in the body, a pale yellow complexion, white tongue coating without thirst, chest stuffiness and lack of appetite, afternoon fever, and a wiry, fine, and soggy pulse. This indicates pathogenic factors located in the Qi aspect of the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
Sanren Tang (Three Kernel Decoction) is the primary formula. (Note: In treating damp-warmth, releasing the exterior through sweating leads to coma; purging with downward-draining methods leads to severe diarrhea; nourishing Yin makes the dampness heavier. One can only treat it slowly with acrid-opening and bland-leaching methods, seeking no quick results, because damp pathogens are soft and greasy. Although the progression is slow, it is difficult to cure quickly.)
Sanren Tang (Three Kernel Decoction)
Xingren (Apricot Seed, 2.5 qian) Feihuas Hi (Pumiced Talcum, 3 qian) Baotongcao (White Akebia Stem, 1 qian) Baokouren (White Cardamom Seed, 1 qian) Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf, 1 qian) Nongpo (Magnolia Bark, 1 qian) Shengyiren (Coix Seed, 3 qian) Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome, 2.5 qian) Decoct with Ganlan Water (Gently Boiling Water). If the tongue coating is yellow indicating heat, replace Baokouren with Baokoupi (Cardamom Peel). If pathogens are in the meridians causing whole-body pulling pain, add Fangji (Stephania Root, 1.5 qian, stir-fried with Guizhi water) and Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root, 2 qian, wine-fried).
In damp-warmth, if there is aversion to cold and cold feet, and after taking warming and dispersing herbs, the cold worsens, it is because Yang Qi is constrained by dampness and cannot reach the exterior or descend.
Tongyang Liqiao Tang (Decoction to Unblock Yang and Benefit Orifices) is the primary formula.
Tongyang Liqiao Tang (Decoction to Unblock Yang and Benefit Orifices)
Lugen (Reed Rhizome, 5 qian) Baotongcao (White Akebia Stem, 5 qian)
Decoct in water and take while hot. Sweating will ensue, and the disease will resolve.
In damp-warmth, if there is mental confusion and delirious speech with a yellow and greasy tongue coating, it indicates damp-heat stagnating in the Qi aspect and internally obscuring the Pericardium Collateral.
Xingren Jiezi Tang (Almond and White Mustard Seed Decoction) is the primary formula.
Xingren Jiezi Tang (Almond and White Mustard Seed Decoction)
Xingren (Apricot Seed, 3 qian) Baijiezi (White Mustard Seed, 1.5 qian) Mutong (Akebia Stem, 1.5 qian, stir-fried with ginger water) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, 8 fen, salt-water fried) Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit, 2 qian) Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit, 1.5 qian) Huashi (Talcum, 3 qian) Lugen (Reed Rhizome, 1.5 qian) Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf, 1 qian) Fuling (Poria, 3 qian) Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome, 2 qian)
Decoct in water and take.
In damp-warmth, if there is mental confusion, delirious speech, a red tongue body without coating, it indicates pathogens have transmitted to the Pericardium, transforming into dryness and injuring Yin, with internal orifices about to close.
Jinpu Tang (Gold and Calamus Decoction) is the primary formula (Most taboo: yin-cold and soft-greasy substances).
Jinpu Tang (Gold and Calamus Decoction)
Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, 1.5 qian) [Note: Substitute with Niujiao or other legal alternatives in modern practice] Yujin (Curcuma Tuber, 1.5 qian) Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit, 3 qian) Yinhua (Honeysuckle Flower, 3 qian) Xianshihu (Fresh Dendrobium Stem, 3 qian) Xianchangpu (Fresh Acorus Rhizome, 3 qian) Xianshengdi (Fresh Rehmannia Root, 2 qian) Xianzhuye (Fresh Bamboo Leaf, 1.5 qian) Lugenzhi (Juice of Reed Rhizome, 3 qian, mixed in) Zhuli (Bamboo Sap, 2 qian, mixed in) Shengjiangzhi (Ginger Juice, 1 drop, mixed in)
Decoct in water and take.
If damp-warmth is mistakenly treated with exterior-releasing methods leading to mental confusion and cold limbs, it indicates pathogens sinking into the Pericardium and entering the collaterals along the meridians.
Jiajian Qinggong Tang (Modified Palace-Clearing Decoction) is decocted to deliver Zhibao Dan (Treasure of the Precious Box Pill) or Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill).
Jiajian Qinggong Tang (Modified Palace-Clearing Decoction)

Zhibao Dan (See previous text) Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill)
At the initial stage of damp syndrome, if there is blurred consciousness, inability to speak, and a white greasy tongue coating, it indicates cold-damp binding and internally obscuring the clear orifices.
Xingren Jiegeng Tang (Almond and Platycodon Decoction) is the primary formula. (This clause identifies cold-damp based on the white greasy tongue coating; compare with the previous three clauses, hence attached here.)
Xingren Jiegeng Tang (Almond and Platycodon Decoction)
Xingren (Apricot Seed, 3 qian) Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 2 qian) Xixin (Asarum Root, 3 fen) Baijiezi (White Mustard Seed, 1 qian) Fuling (Poria, 3 qian) Zexie (Alisma Rhizome, 1.5 qian) Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith, 1 qian)
Decoct in water and take.
During the prevalence of warm epidemics, sudden onset of aversion to cold and high fever, headache and body pain so severe as to be unbearable, worsening in the afternoon, white tongue coating like accumulated powder tightly adhering, and an extremely rapid or deep-hidden pulse, indicates epidemic toxins transmitted from person to person, entering via mouth and nose and occupying the Mu Yuan (Moyuan/Root of Abdomen).
Dayuan Yin (Decoction to Reach the Origin) is the primary formula. (For weak constitutions, first use Yinqiao San (Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder) for release; if ineffective, then use Dayuan Yin.)
Dayuan Yin (Decoction to Reach the Origin)

Decoct two cups of water to eight parts, take in the afternoon. (If irritability occurs after taking, it indicates impending battle-sweat; resolution comes with sweating.)
In damp-warmth, if there is throat obstruction and sore throat, it indicates pathogenic closure of Lung Qi.
Yinqiao Mabo San (Honeysuckle, Forsythia and Moella Powder) is the primary formula.
Yinqiao Mabo San (Honeysuckle, Forsythia and Moella Powder)
Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit, 3 qian) Niubangzi (Arctium Fruit, 2 qian) Yinhua (Honeysuckle Flower, 1.5 qian) Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome, 1 qian) Mabo (Moella Spore, 1 qian)
Decoct in water and take. If the throat is not painful but obstruction is severe, add Huashi (Talcum, 2 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 1.5 qian), and Weigen (Reed Root, 1.5 qian).
In Taiyin damp-warmth, if bi-stagnation leads to hiccups (commonly known as hiccup), it is due to stagnation of clear Yang Qi in the Upper Jiao.
Xuanbi Tang (Decoction to Disperse Bi) is the primary formula.
Xuanbi Tang (Decoction to Disperse Bi)
Pipaye (Loquat Leaf, 2 qian) Yujin (Curcuma Tuber, 1.5 qian) Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome, 1 qian) Baotongcao (White Akebia Stem, 1 qian) Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean, 1.5 qian)
Decoct in water and take.
In Taiyin damp-warmth, if there is panting and shortness of breath, it is due to damp-heat steaming phlegm obstructing the Qi aspect.
Jiawei Qianjin Weijing Tang (Modified Thousand-Gold Reed Shoot Decoction) is the primary formula. (Cold-fluid retention is not included in this category.)
Jiawei Qianjin Weijing Tang (Modified Thousand-Gold Reed Shoot Decoction)

Decoct in water and take.
At the initial stage of summer-heat, with headache, fever, red face, vexation, thirst, sweating, and a surging right pulse, it indicates summer-heat injuring the Qi aspect of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Jiawei Tianshui San (Modified Heavenly Water Powder) is the primary formula. If the right pulse is surging, rapid, forceful, with severe thirst, profuse sweating, and panting, it indicates Metal (Lung) being punished by Fire (Summer-heat).
Baitu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) is the primary formula. If the pulse is surging and hollow (Kou), it indicates Qi deficiency.
Baitu Jia Renshen Tang (White Tiger Decoction with Ginseng) is the primary formula. If the body feels heavy, it indicates dampness.
Baitu Jia Cangzhu Tang (White Tiger Decoction with Atractylodes) is the primary formula. (Cangzhu is drying and harsh; contraindicated in Yin deficiency. Replace with bland-leaching substances.)
Jiawei Tianshui San (Modified Heavenly Water Powder)

In Hand-Taiyin summer-heat, with a surging right pulse, headache, fever, red face, vexation, thirst, shivering aversion to cold, but no sweating, it indicates summer-heat constrained by cold.
Xinjia Xiangru Yin (Newly Added Elsholtzia Decoction) is the primary formula. (After taking, if slight sweating occurs, stop administration to avoid excessive damage to the exterior by Xiangru.)
Xinjia Xiangru Yin (Newly Added Elsholtzia Decoction)
Xiangru (Elsholtzia Herb, 1 qian) Yinhua (Honeysuckle Flower, 1.5 qian) Xianbiandouhua (Fresh Hyacinth Bean Flower, 1.5 qian) Nongpo (Magnolia Bark, 1 qian) Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit, 1 qian)
Decoct in water and take. If no sweat, administer again.
In summer-heat, with four-limb fatigue, reduced spirit, high body temperature, vexation, yellow urine, thirst, spontaneous sweating, and a deficient pulse, Wangshi Yiqi Tang (Wang's Qi-Nourishing Decoction) is the primary formula. If summer-heat pathogens are cleared but Qi deficiency causes fatigue, severe thirst, profuse sweating, and a scattered, large, nearly collapsing pulse, Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) is the primary formula. (If summer-heat pathogens remain, absolutely do not use Shengmai San; doing so will lead to difficult-to-treat panting and fullness.)
Wangshi Yiqi Tang (Wang's Qi-Nourishing Decoction) (Wang Mengying established this formula because Li Dongyuan's Qingshu Yiqi Tang lacked actual clearing-summer-heat efficacy.)
Xiyangshen (American Ginseng, 3 qian) Shihu (Dendrobium Stem, 3 qian) Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 2 qian) Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf, 2 qian) Hegeng (Lotus Peduncle, 1 qian) Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome, 2 qian) Gancao (Licorice Root, 8 fen) Xiguacuiyi (Watermelon Rind Green Skin, 3 qian) Jingmi (Rice Grain, 3 qian)

Renshen (Ginseng, 1.5 qian) Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 1 qian, heart not removed) Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, 5 fen)
Decoct in water and take.
If residual summer-heat pathogens remain unclear, with only slight head distension and blurred vision, Qingluo Yin (Clear Collateral Decoction) is the primary formula.
Qingluo Yin (Clear Collateral Decoction)
Xian Yinhua (Fresh Honeysuckle Flower, 2 qian) Xian heyebian (Fresh Lotus Leaf Edge, 2 qian) Xiguacuiyi (Watermelon Rind Green Skin, 2 qian) Siguapi (Luffa Peel, 2 qian) Xian biandouhua (Fresh Hyacinth Bean Flower, 1 branch) Xian zhuyexin (Fresh Bamboo Leaf Heart, 2 qian)
Decoct in water and take. It can be used for all mild cases of summer-heat injuring the Qi aspect of the Lung Meridian. In Hand-Taiyin summer-heat, if there is cough without sputum and a clear, bright voice, it indicates heat injuring Lung collaterals.
Yijia Qingluo Yin (One-Added Clear Collateral Decoction) is the primary formula.
Yijia Qingluo Yin (One-Added Clear Collateral Decoction)
Add Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 2 qian), Tian Xingren (Sweet Apricot Seed, 2 qian), and Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 3 qian) to the original Qingluo Yin formula.
In summer-heat, if there is alternating chills and fever, white tongue coating without thirst, and hematemesis, it indicates both interior and exterior, Qi and Blood are affected. This is named Shuzhai (Summer-heat Consumption).
Erjia Qingluo Yin (Two-Added Clear Collateral Decoction) is the primary formula.
Erjia Qingluo Yin (Two-Added Clear Collateral Decoction)
Add Huashi (Talcum, 3 qian), Yiren (Coix Seed, 3 qian), and Tian Xingren (Sweet Apricot Seed, 3 qian) to the original Qingluo Yin formula.
In bilateral Taiyin summer-heat, if there is heavy cough, much sputum, little thirst, or thirst but little desire to drink, it indicates summer-heat combined with retained fluids.
Jiawei Xiaobanxia Jia Fuling Tang (Modified Minor Pinellia plus Poria Decoction) is the primary formula.

Decoct with Ganlan Water and take warm.
If the pulse is deficient, sleep is restless at night, there is vexation and thirst, red face, occasional delirious speech, eyes often open and not closing, or preferring to stay closed, it indicates summer-heat entering the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian.
Qingying Tang (Clear Nutrient Decoction) is the primary formula. (If the tongue coating is slippery and white, dampness is heavy; treat according to damp-warmth methods.)
In Hand-Jueyin summer-heat, with fever, no aversion to cold, mental confusion, and occasional delirious speech, Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill) is the primary formula. Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) is also applicable.
In pediatric summer-heat, if there is sudden fever followed by spasms and convulsions, it is named Shuxian (Summer-heat Epilepsy). Qingying Tang (Clear Nutrient Decoction) is the primary formula. (If heat has just entered the Ying level and Liver wind stirs internally causing twitching of hands and feet, add Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), and Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn).)
Small amounts of Zixue Dan may also be given. The treatment for adult summer-heat epilepsy is the same.
Qingying Tang (Clear Nutrient Decoction)

Contracting summer-heat in late summer, manifesting after summer passes, with headache, slight aversion to cold, red face, vexation, thirst, white tongue coating, and soggy-rapid pulse, regardless of autumn or winter season, is called Taiyin Fushe (Latent Summer-heat of Taiyin).
Jiajian Yinqiao San (Modified Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder) is the primary formula.
Yinqiao San (Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder) (See previous text)
If tongue is white, thirsty, no sweat: remove Niubangzi and Yuanshen from original formula; add Xingrenni (Apricot Seed Paste, 2 qian) and Feihuashi (Pumiced Talcum, 3 qian). For Taiyin Fushe, if tongue is white, sweating is profuse, thirst is severe, and pulse is surging, still use Baitu Tang (White Tiger Decoction). If pulse is deficient, large, and hollow, still use Renshen Baitu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction). If tongue is red, thirsty, and sweating is profuse, Jiawei Shengmai San (Modified Generate the Pulse Powder) is the primary formula.
