[Golden Chamber Formula] Danggui San: Suitable for regular consumption during pregnancy.
Ingredients: Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) (each 1 liang), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) (0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above five herbs into fine powder. Take one fangcun bi (a measure of volume) mixed with wine, twice daily.
Commentary: This formula is a blood-nourishing and heat-clearing preparation. It is suitable for thin individuals with blood deficiency and internal heat who experience restless fetus, recurrent miscarriage, or difficult labor. It clears the source of pathology to prevent future complications.
[Qianjin Formula] Fuling Banxia Tang: Treats pregnancy nausea and vomiting (Ezu), characterized by mental oppression, retching, dizziness, limb fatigue, irritability and pain, phlegm counterflow, vomiting, aversion to cold, spontaneous sweating, and sallow complexion.

Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct 4 qian with fresh ginger and bamboo shavings (Zhuru). Another version adds Radix Ginseng (Renshen), named Zhuru Tang; Liangfang calls it Ren Shen Jupi Tang.
[Liangfang Formula] Jiao Ai Tang: Treats restless fetus due to falls during pregnancy, characterized by lower back and abdominal pain; or fetal qi rushing to the chest; or vaginal bleeding with abdominal pain.
Ingredients: Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao, 1 jin, honey-fried), Folium Artemisiae Argyi (Aiye) (a few sprigs). Zhimifang adds Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae (Qinjiao).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct the two ingredients in 5 sheng of water until 2 sheng remains. Divide into three doses.
[Ejiao San] (Yanshi Fang as Jiao Ai Tang): Regardless of the depth of pregnancy months, treats restless fetus due to falls or accidental ingestion of toxic drugs, characterized by lower back pain, abdominal fullness, fetal qi rushing to the chest, and shortness of breath.
Ingredients: Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang), Folium Artemisiae Argyi (Aiye), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Radix Astragali Membranacei (Huangqi), Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao, honey-fried) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct 4 qian with fresh ginger and dates (Zao). The Golden Chamber formula does not contain Huangqi.
[Foshou San]: Treats vaginal bleeding due to fetal injury during pregnancy.
Ingredients: Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui) (3 qian), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) (2 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct in water and take before meals.
[Antenatal Calming Powder]: Treats abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding caused by touching the fetal qi due to falling from heights or being crushed by heavy objects during pregnancy; also suitable for retching due to stomach deficiency.
Ingredients: Fructus Amomi Rotundus (Suosha) (as needed, stir-fried).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian mixed with wine. Can also be taken with Aiyan Tang (Mugwort and Salt Decoction).
[Jianyi Formula) Zimu Yin: Treats pregnancy characterized by heat stagnation in the heart and spleen, bitter thirst in the throat and diaphragm, mental restlessness, and frequent fright.
Ingredients: Red Poria (Chifuling), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin), Radix Astragali Membranacei (Huangqi) (each 3 liang), Radix Anemarrhenae (Zimu), Radix Ophiopogonis (Maimendong), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao) (each 2 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct 4 qian with Cortex Mori Radicis (Sangbaipi). When nearly cooked, add a small amount of Bamboo Sap (Zhuli).
[Zhu Ye Tang]: Treats pregnancy anxiety and timidity with all-day mental restlessness, named "Zi Fan" (Fetal Irritability).
Ingredients: White Poria (Bailingfu) (4 liang), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng), Radix Ophiopogonis (Maimendong), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin) (each 3 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct 4 qian with five leaves of Bambusa vulgaris var. viridistriatis (Zhu ye) in water. Waitai Fang has Zhu li but no Zhu ye; another version has Huangqin and Zimu.
[Bacui Formula) Zhiqiao Tang: Treats vaginal spotting (Tailou) or bleeding due to various causes.
Ingredients: Fructus Aurantii (Zhiqiao, stir-fried), Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin) (each 0.5 liang), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) (1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take 1 qian mixed with plain boiled water. Xuanming Fang lacks Zhiqiao.
[Erhuang San]: Treats vaginal spotting (Tailou).
Ingredients: Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Shengdihuang), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian or 1.5 qian mixed with decoction of Baizhu and Zhiqiao.
Commentary: Liangfang states: After a woman conceives, blood accumulates to nourish the fetus. How can it be dispersed again? The reason is that menstruation continues monthly during pregnancy, which may not necessarily be due to abundant blood. If one claims wind in the Ying channel causes blood movement, since wind is active, this example shows that the causes of Tailou are manifold. Practitioners should expand their understanding.
[Dihuang Danggui Tang]: Treats fetal pain.
Ingredients: Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui) (1 liang), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang) (2 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Decoct 0.5 liang in water. Liangfang and others grind equal parts into powder and make honey pills, named Neibu Wan. Xu Xueshi said: Generally, for pregnant women, the key is to suppress Yang and assist Yin. There are many such medicines. However, antenatal medications should avoid chaotic combinations. If Yin and Yang mix, other diseases may arise. Zhiqiao San suppresses Yang, while Siwu Tang assists Yin. However, Zhiqiao San is cold; taking it alone may cause fetal cold and abdominal pain. Using Neibu Wan to assist it balances Yang and Yin, benefiting the fetus. This was not discussed by predecessors. I carefully examine that balancing Yin and Yang is better than not taking medicine at all.
[Quansheng Formula) Baizhu San: Treats pregnancy edema, characterized by puffy face and limbs resembling water retention, named "Zi Zhong".
Ingredients: Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) (1 liang), Cortex Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiangpi), Fructus Tsaoko (Dafupi), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi), White Poria (Baifuling) (each 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian mixed with rice drink. Zhimifang has Sangbaipi but no Baizhu.
[Li Shi Formula) Tianxianteng San: Treats pregnancy starting from the third month after conception, where swelling gradually spreads from the feet to the legs and knees, making walking difficult, accompanied by asthma, chest oppression, poor appetite, resembling water retention, until yellow fluid oozes from between toes, named "Zi Qi".
Ingredients: Herba Aristolochiae Manshuriensis (Tianxianteng, washed and lightly stir-fried), Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi (Xiangfuzi, stir-fried), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao), Radix Linderae (Wuyao) (equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian, decoct in water with three slices of fresh ginger, three pieces of Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua), and three leaves of Perillae Folium (Zisu). Take on an empty stomach and before meals, three times daily. Stop medication when swelling subsides.
Commentary: These two formulas treat similar syndromes, so they are recorded together.
[Yanshi Formula) Zisu Yin: Treats disharmony of fetal qi, with qi rushing upward causing abdominal distension and pain, named "Zi Xuan".
Ingredients: Fructus Tsaoko (Dafupi), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishao), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi), Folium Perillae (Zuye), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui) (each 1 liang), Radix Ginseng (Renshen), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao) (each 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct 4 qian with fresh ginger and scallion white.
[Anrong San]: Treats pregnancy dysuria with scanty urine, named "Zi Lin".
Ingredients: Radix Ophiopogonis (Maimendong), Herba Tectariae (Tongcao), Talcum (Huashi) (each 3 qian), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Juncus Effusus (Dengxin), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao) (each 0.5 liang), Radix Ginseng (Renshen), Radix Asari (Xixin) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian mixed with Maimendong decoction.
[Lingyangjiao San]: Treats pregnancy stroke, characterized by stiffness of head and neck, muscle spasms, slurred speech, difficulty expectorating phlegm, occasional convulsions, and loss of consciousness, named "Zi Xian".
Ingredients: Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Lingyangjiao, shaved), Radix Actaeae Sarmentosa (Chuan Du Huo), Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (Suanzaoren, stir-fried), Cortex Acanthopanacis Senticosi (Wujia Pi) (each 0.5 qian), Semen Coicis (Yiyiren), Radix Saposhnikoviae (Fangfeng), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Poria Cum Radix Pachymatis (Fushen), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (Xingren) (each 4 fen), Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao) (each 2.5 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct 5 qian with fresh ginger.
[Bawei Wan]: Treats urinary retention during pregnancy, named "Zhuan Bao", and also treats Zi Lin.
Source: See Bu Xu Men.
[Danjxi Formula) Shenju San: Treats Zhuan Bao.
Ingredients: Siwu Tang plus Radix Ginseng (Renshen), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu), Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum (Banxia, processed), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct with fresh ginger and take on an empty stomach.
Commentary: Danxi said: Zhuan Bao occurs in women with weak constitution, excessive worry, irritable temperament, or rich diet. Ancient formulas used slippery lubricants rarely effective. I think the bladder is not twisted itself but compressed by the fetus to one side, causing the bladder ligaments to twist and block the water passage. If the fetus lifts, the ligaments relax and water flows freely. However, fetal descent has reasons. Recently, a concubine in Wu's house suffered this. Her pulses were slightly choppy, tight upon heavy pressure, and harmonious on the left. I said: This is due to worry. Choppy pulse indicates blood deficiency and excess qi, making fetal qi weak unable to lift. Tight pulse indicates fluid retention. Blood deficiency makes fetus weak; excess qi with fluid retention clouds the middle jiao, narrowing the space, causing the bladder to descend. I gave the above medicine. Then induced vomiting with finger, waited for qi to settle, then fed again. Next morning same. After eight doses, cured. This method may be coincidental. Later treated several others successfully. Zhang Zhongjing said: Women originally with fleshiness feel full when lifting head; now emaciated, feeling hollow when lifting head, bladder ligaments twist, causing this disease. Promoting urination cures it. Use Shengqi Wan because it contains Fuling. Dihuang as sovereign herb benefits the bladder. The meaning of "lifting head" is unclear.
Commentary: The above antenatal methods use medicines for fundamental Qi and Blood disorders, not acrid-hot or bitter-cold agents. Generally, antenatal care requires clearing heat and nourishing blood. However, if there is external wind-cold or internal cold damage, use acrid-hot to disperse and warm. For large accumulations, reduce them halfway. The Classic says: How to treat poison in pregnancy? Qibo said: If there is a cause, no injury occurs. This method is not for fundamental disease.
