Ms. Wei was startled by an incident. The next day, she lost her appetite. She experienced dizziness and constipation. The physician diagnosed it as deficiency of the Shen (Spirit) and administered several doses of tonifying prescriptions. This resulted in frequent episodes of syncope. Another physician treated it as Zhong Feng (Wind Stroke), and the condition worsened. Ten days later, Meng Ying examined her pulse, which was Xian (Wiry) and Fu (Deep) yet Hua (Slippery). There was no distension or fullness in the chest and abdomen. She had not had a bowel movement for over ten days. This is Qi disorder due to fright, accompanied by rebellious rising of Phlegm turbidity. This corresponds to Zhong Jing's principle that various Jue (Cold Extremities/Syncope) syndromes should be treated with purgation; specifically, purging the Phlegm and rebellious Qi. The prescription consisted of Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Dai Zhe Shi (Hematitum), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Xue Geng Tang (Snow Broth), Chuan Lian Zi (Toosendan Fructus), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Jin Bo (Gold Leaf), Zhu Li (Bambusae Succus), and Fu Zhuang Zhi (Raphani Fructus Juice). Additionally, an iron tool was heated red-hot and quenched in vinegar, and the patient was instructed to inhale the fumes. After two doses, the Jue syndrome ceased. She recovered within ten days. An elderly woman in her sixties suffered from radiating pain in the waist and legs. Upon hearing any sound, her leg tendons would spasm uncontrollably. This occurred twenty to thirty times daily. She had been bedridden for years without effect from various medications. Meng Ying observed a Chen (Deep) and Xian (Wiry) pulse, greasy tongue coating, and constipation. Her condition had deteriorated due to the extensive use of warm-tonifying medicines. He prescribed Xue Geng Tang (Snow Broth), Ling Yang Jiao (Capris Cornu), Chuan Lian Zi (Toosendan Fructus), Dan Xing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Ju Luo (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride Retinervum), Zhu Li (Bambusae Succus), and Si Gua Luo (Luffae Fructus Retinervum).
