Swallowing Mengshi Guntan Wan (Lapis Malachitis Phlegm-Draining Pill) and Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Sinensis Gardenia Bile Pill). After four doses, severe diarrhea occurred dozens of times, with feces that were exceptionally foul-smelling and tough in texture. The muscle twitching ceased immediately. Then the two pills were removed, and Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lian Zi (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba) were added. After taking six more doses, the patient's appetite recovered, and they could walk while being supported. Son of Patient Yao. Muscle twitching in both legs, pain worsening when lying down. Pediatricians treated it as wind-stroke (convulsions), but the condition deteriorated. Meng Ying prescribed Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Dou Juan (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), Wei Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Sang Zhi (Mori Ramulus), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Siguo Luo (Bambusae Caulis Retinamen), resulting in efficacy. Wife of Xu Gensheng, over forty years old. Contracted illness during intense summer heat. Chen Yueting consecutively administered Qingjie (clearing and resolving) herbs, but failed to curb the pathogenic force. Meng Ying examined the patient, noting a robust physique, abundant phlegm, a very slippery and rapid pulse, restlessness, delirium, crimson tongue, red face, thirst with desire to drink, and scanty, difficult urination. A large dose of Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) was prescribed with added Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Zhu Huang (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), delivered via decoction along with Guntan Wan (Phlegm-Draining Pill). After ingestion, stool resembling glue and lacquer was passed, and the pulse and symptoms gradually harmonized. Several days later, the pill was discontinued, but the condition worsened again, even leading to syncope. The pill was reinstated, and the condition stabilized. This cycle repeated three times before the danger subsided. Yueting then used Baijin Wan (Platinum Pill) to eliminate retained phlegm below the diaphragm, followed by continuous use of Ganliang Runrun (Sweet-Cool Moistening) methods to replenish body fluids and search out residual heat, leading to gradual recovery. (Prescription: Sheng Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) prepared first, one liang six qian; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) four qian; Slashed Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) prepared first, four qian; Ji Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) one liang five qian; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) crushed, one liang; Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) four qian; Xian Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) two qian; Jiang Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) four qian; Jiang Zhu Li (Zingiberis Recens汁 mixed with Bamboo Sap) two large wine cups diluted, ginger juice comprising 20% of the bamboo sap; decoction used to deliver Guntan Wan four qian; Yuan Shen Pian (Scrophulariae Radix slice) soaked and diluted, dregs discarded, eight qian.)
Mother-in-law of Shen Xinyu suddenly suffered from syncope. Upon examination, Meng Ying noted the patient lived on an upper floor where the heat was stifling. He stated, "This is a constitution with yin deficiency and inherent hyperactivity of liver yang. Summer-heat pathogen has entered the pericardium. It is urgent to move the bed to a cool place." Immediately, Yixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) one qian was administered, mixed with newly drawn cold water, which brought peace. Following this method, the medicine was forced down, and the patient indeed calmed down instantly.
Xu family woman, pregnant, suffered from limb pain so severe she could not flex or extend her limbs. Medications were ineffective. Meng Ying diagnosed, "Summer-heat pathogen has entered the collaterals. My wife once suffered from this and was cured using Sang Zhi (Mori Ramulus), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), Bian Dou Ye (Phaseoli Cordati Folium), Siguo Luo (Bambusae Caulis Retinamen), Ling Yang Jiao (Caprae Cornu), Dou Juan (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Bai Wei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix), and Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus)." She took the prescription as directed and recovered. (Prescription: Wine-fried Sang Zhi (Mori Ramulus) four qian; Fresh Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) two qian; Bian Dou Ye (Phaseoli Cordati Folium) three qian; Siguo Luo (Bambusae Caulis Retinamen) three qian; Ling Yang Jiao (Caprae Cornu) prepared first, four qian; Da Dou Juan (Sojae Semen Praeparatum) added later, three qian; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) three qian; Wine-fried Ku Qin (Scutellariae Radix) one and a half qian; Xiang Bai Wei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix) one and a half qian; Hei Zhi Pi (Gardeniae Fructus pericarpium) three qian.)
Chen family woman, previously healthy, was vigorous after childbirth, with abundant lactation and good appetite. In early June, she suddenly emaciated. Initially suspected to be due to hot weather, she gradually reduced food intake. Meng Ying examined her, finding a fine and rapid pulse, and a glossy, crimson tongue without coating. He said, "This is Ji Lao (Acute Consumption). There is no medicine for it. Milk is transformed from blood. The quantity of milk reflects the abundance or scarcity of blood. Now, excessive lactation is like a plant expelling all its essence outward just before withering. Even if we stop lactation now, it will be too late." Lactation was stopped immediately, and medicine was given. She died in autumn.
Grandson of Wu, suffering from fever and profuse diarrhea, extreme thirst, scanty urine, and absence of nasal discharge and tears. Meng Ying said, "Summer-heat and dampness are affecting the spleen and stomach." He prescribed Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix), Sheng Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen), Sheng Bian Dou (Phaseoli Tostrei Semen), Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), Hua Shi (Talcum), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), and Dong Gua Pi (Benincasae Exocarpium), decocted in Cheng Di Jiang (Clarified Earth Water). The patient recovered in a few days. Note: Such cases are invariably treated by pediatricians as Jing Feng (Wind-Stroke/Convulsions), leading to many premature deaths. (Prescription: Bei Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix) three qian; Sheng Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) crushed, four qian; Sheng Bian Dou (Phaseoli Tostrei Semen) crushed and prepared first, one and a half qian; Ji Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) and Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) prepared first, each five qian; Xi Hua Shi (Talcum) bagged and prepared first, three qian; Sheng Fen Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) two qian; Fresh Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) one qian; Dong Gua Pi (Benincasae Exocarpium) four qian; Decocted in clarified earth water.)
Jiang, suffering from malaria. The physician prescribed Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) and Ping Wei San (Peaceful Stomach Powder), but the condition worsened. Subsequently, large doses of warming tonics were given, bringing the condition to the brink of danger. Gui Zhi Bai Hu Tang (Cinnamon Twig White Tiger Decoction) was reused, but mania persisted. Meng Ying examined and said, "This is Shu Nüe (Summer-heat Malaria). Gui Zhi Bai Hu Tang would have been excellent at the onset. Now, warming dispersants and drying tonics have aided the pathogen and scorched the fluids. The pulse is uncontrolled and rapid, with incessant sweating and thirst. Although Baihu Tang is indicated, how can Gui Zhi be added? This aids heat and consumes fluids, hindering oneself." He prescribed a large dose of Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) with added Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), and Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis). The patient felt better immediately. After more than ten doses, the malaria subsided, but the tongue remained coating-less, and thirst persisted. Sweet-cool moistening agents were given for over thirty doses until full recovery. (Prescription: Sheng Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) prepared first, one liang six qian; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) five qian; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Fresh Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) two qian; Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng) three qian; Yuan Shen Pian (Scrophulariae Radix slice) soaked and diluted, dregs discarded, eight qian; Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) prepared first, one liang.)
Sun Xinyan, aged seventy, suffered from dysentery. Hu knew it was summer-heat and purged with Qing Lin Wan (Clear Forest Pill), which was appropriate. However, consecutive administration of Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix) led to sore throat, oral ulcers, hiccups, and inability to open the mouth (Jin Kou). Physicians administered tonics, and the condition became critical. Meng Ying examined, finding the right pulse slippery, rapid, and surging upward, body heat, red face, scanty urination, insomnia, robust physique, and abundant phlegm, with frequent sweating. In the category of dysentery, this is indeed a critical sign. But correlating pulse and symptoms, is this yang deficiency with impending collapse? No, it is actually caused by ascending, dispersing, warming, and drying agents scorching yin fluids, causing qi of the lung and stomach to stagnate and fail to descend. Large doses of clearing and肃ifying (purifying/clearing) medicines were given. One dose showed improvement, two doses resolved the issue. Subsequently, fluids were nourished, and the dysentery healed. (Prescription: Fresh Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) two liang; Hei Zhi Pi (Gardeniae Fructus pericarpium) three qian; Wine-fried Ku Qin (Scutellariae Radix) one and a half qian; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) three qian; Whole Bi Qi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) one liang; Dan Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea) two liang; Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) prepared first, one liang; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Yuan Shen Pian (Scrophulariae Radix slice) soaked and diluted, dregs discarded, eight qian; Hai Fu Shi (Pumex) and Sheng Ge Qiao (Tridacnae Concha) each five qian, prepared first together; Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos) bagged and prepared first, three qian; Sheng Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) prepared first, one liang two qian.)
Cao Zuo, suffering from simultaneous malaria and dysentery. Less chills, more fever, passing five-colored dysenteric stools. Meng Ying examined, noting a dirty complexion, yellow coating, dry retching, thirst, painful distension, red urine, sweating, mental fatigue, and a洪大 (surging-large) pulse uncountable. He prescribed a large dose of Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Hua Shi (Talcum), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix), Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia). The effect was immediate upon administration, and the patient rose after three doses. (Note: Dirty complexion and yellow coating indicate excess-heat. Dry retching indicates yang depression; mental fatigue indicates yang loss through sweat, hence Hou Po is included. Surging-large rapid pulse indicates yin deficiency with heat, hence Hua Fen is included. Wine-fried Ku Qin (Scutellariae Radix) one and a half qian; Wine-fried Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) one qian; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) three qian; Prepared Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) one qian; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Ji Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) one liang five qian; Sheng Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) prepared first, one liang two qian; Lian Qiao Ke (Forsythiae Fructus shell) three qian; Jiang Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) four qian.)
Chen Zi, contracted a cold in early autumn. Physicians prescribed exterior-releasing and warming tonics, worsening the disease. By early August, Meng Ying examined him: eyes staring, spirit dull, intermittent panting, crimson tongue, muteness, watery diarrhea, limb twitching, and cold extremities. The pulse was wiry, soft, and rapid. This is a constitution of yin deficiency and liver excess. Exterior release aided rising rebellion; warming tonics obstructed the pivot. Phlegm-fluid retention and wind-yang rampant ensued. He prescribed Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha), Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Zhe Shi (Haematitum), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chuan Lian (Toosendan Fructus), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Dan Xing (Arisaema cum Bile), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), and Ling Yang Jiao (Caprae Cornu). These extinguished wind, anchored rebellion, cleared heat, and dispelled phlegm. After several doses, the condition stabilized. (Prescription: Blood Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) crushed, two liang; Mu Li (Ostreae Concha) crushed, four liang; Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) crushed, one liang; Vine-processed Zhe Shi (Haematitum) crushed, eight qian; Slashed Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) and Ling Yang Jiao (Caprae Cornu) each four qian, these five items prepared first with charcoal for eight minutes, decoction used as water for brewing other herbs; Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos) silk-bagged, three qian; Wine-fried Ku Qin (Scutellariae Radix) one qian; Wine-fried Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) two qian; Chuan Lian (Toosendan Fructus) core crushed and prepared first, two qian; Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) crushed, eight qian; Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) added later, two qian; Jiang Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) three qian; Chen Dan Xing (Arisaema cum Bile) stewed and mixed for administration, eight fen.)
Gong Fu, contracted an autumnal cold. Condition worsened daily after taking warming dispersants. Meng Ying examined: pulse wiry, rapid, soft, and slippery; black coating; limb twitching. He prescribed Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Ling Yang Jiao (Caprae Cornu), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma). He said, "Take this urgently, or syncope will occur." After administration, life was saved. Next day re-examination: pulse more harmonious. Consistent cooling therapy led to gradual recovery. (Prescription: Bei Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix) eight qian; Yuan Shen Pian (Scrophulariae Radix slice) soaked and diluted, dregs discarded, one liang; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) four qian; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Slashed Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) and Ling Yang Jiao (Caprae Cornu) each four qian, prepared first with charcoal for eight minutes; Hei Zhi Pi (Gardeniae Fructus pericarpium) three qian; Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) added later, two qian.)
Wu Mou, fell ill after the provincial examination. Meng Ying found the pulse very rapid, red urine, yellow coating, thirst, and dry coughing. The disease originated from summer-heat and dampness, but the constitution was extremely yin-deficient, transforming into heat. Purging was contraindicated, and any contact with warming-drying herbs should be avoided. First, light-clearing and肃ifying (purifying/clearing) agents were given, followed by sweet-cool heat-removing agents. Gradually, the patient could eat. Half a month later, the heat completely subsided. Night sweats and insomnia appeared, treated with large doses of nourishing-filling and anchoring-subduing agents, combined with swallowing Wu Wei Zi Ci Zhu Wan (Schisandra Magneta Pil). After dozens of doses, recovery was achieved. (Light-clearing formula: Bei Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix) eight qian; Yuan Shen Pian (Scrophulariae Radix slice) soaked and diluted, dregs discarded, one liang; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Fresh Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) two liang; Fresh Pi Ye (Eriobotryae Folium) brushed and bagged, three qian; Fresh Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) two qian; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) four qian; Dan Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea) prepared first, two liang; Dong Gua Pi (Benincasae Exocarpium) four qian. Sweet-cool heat-removing formula: Honey-mixed Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) two liang; Honey-fried Pi Ye (Eriobotryae Folium) brushed and bagged, three qian; Fresh Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma) five qian; Ji Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) one liang; Fresh Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) two qian; Whole Bi Qi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) crushed, one liang; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) three qian; Qing Guo (Canarii Fructus) with core crushed and prepared first, one. Large nourishing-filling formula: Da Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) eight qian; Da Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix) one liang; Ming Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix) cut, six qian; Hua Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) four qian; Qing Guo (Canarii Fructus) crushed and prepared first, three qian; Shi Bing Rou (Datiscae Fructus flesh) de-rimed, five qian; Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus) one and a half qian; Mu Li (Ostreae Concha) six liang; Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) crushed, one liang; Blood Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) crushed, three liang; Zi Shi Ying (Pyritum) five qian. Four items prepared first with charcoal for eight minutes, decoction used as water for brewing other herbs. Medicine delivered Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) three fen and Ci Zhu Wan (Magneta Pil) two qian.)
Zhang Shi, since mid-pregnancy abortion in spring, had intermittent fever until late autumn. Extensive use of yin-nourishing herbs failed. Meng Ying examined the pulse, feeling empty upon pressure. He prescribed Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang (Angelica Tonify-Qi Decoction), and the fever subsided. Subsequently, Xiao Jian Zhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction) cured the condition. (Prescription: Fried Xi Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) five qian; Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) two qian; Fried Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) three qian; Fried Yun Ling (Poria) three qian; Fried Lu Dang (Codonopsis Radix) three qian; Prepared Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) three qian; Fried Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) one qian; Wu Mei Rou (Mume Fructus flesh) three qian; Ye Jiao Teng (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis) three qian; Fried Yu Zhu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) three qian. Followed by Xiao Jian Zhong Tang: Fried Fen Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) three qian; Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) split, three pieces; Lu Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) three qian; Yun Ling (Poria) three qian; Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) two qian; Wine-fried Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) one and a half qian; Fried Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) three qian; Ye Jiao Teng (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis) three qian; Chen Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus) three qian; Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus) three qian.)
Yu Zi, contracted a cold, accompanied by abdominal pain and distension. Hu prescribed warming dispersants, leading to obstruction of urination and defecation, delirium, extreme thirst, and black prickly tongue coating. Meng Ying prescribed Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Chuan Lian (Toosendan Fructus), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), and Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). After bowel movement, spirit cleared. Xi Jiao was removed, and Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) added. After two doses, coating dissolved and heat receded, leaving only lower abdominal stiffness and distension, and lack of hunger. The prescription was changed to Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chuan Lian (Toosendan Fructus), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Ju He (Citri Reticulatae Fructus), Rong Rong (Cynomorii Herba), Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix), and Zhi Jun (Prepared Da Huang). Black stools were passed continuously, and the patient gradually stabilized. (Note: Meng Ying's use of purgation here must have been based on pulse evidence, not just symptoms. Slashed Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) prepared first, four qian; Lian Qiao Ke (Forsythiae Fructus shell) three qian; Chuan Lian (Toosendan Fructus) core crushed and prepared first, four qian; Bo He Jian (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba tip) added later, one and a half qian; Wine-fried Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) one qian; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Yuan Shen Pian (Scrophulariae Radix slice) soaked and diluted, dregs discarded, one liang; Raw Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) soaked and pressed, diluted, four qian. Subsequently, Xi Jiao removed, Fen Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) added, two qian. Lower abdominal stiffness implies tenderness to pressure, hence Zhi Jun (Prepared Da Huang) is used with acrid-warm moving agents. Changed to Hei Zhi Pi (Gardeniae Fructus pericarpium) three qian; Wine-fried Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) eight fen; Chuan Lian (Toosendan Fructus) core crushed and prepared first, three qian; Sheng Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus) three qian; Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma) one and a half qian; Ju He (Citri Reticulatae Fructus) crushed, one qian; Dan Rong Rong (Cynomorii Herba) one and a half qian; Medicine soaked with Zhi Jun (Prepared Da Huang) four qian.)
Zhou Tongfu, suffering from malaria with profuse sweating. Doctors feared collapse and prescribed Niujin Tang (Rescue Reversal Decoction), worsening the condition. Meng Ying examined and said, "This is Shi Nüe (Damp Malaria). Damp patients often sweat; there is no need to fear. Moreover, with thirst and red urine, warming tonics are contraindicated." Clearing and resolving agents were given, leading to gradual peace. Later, his father Qiu Shu fell ill. Initial warming tonics worsened the condition. Another doctor identified it as Fu Shu (Latent Summer-heat). After several doses of appropriate medicine, the heat gradually receded. Meng Ying was consulted, finding the chi pulse chaotic. He told the nephew, "Your uncle's condition cannot be cured; I cannot treat it." This proved true. (Clearing formula: Dong Gua Pi (Benincasae Exocarpium) four qian; Hei Zhi Pi (Gardeniae Fructus pericarpium) three qian; Fresh Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) two liang; Wine-fried Ku Qin (Scutellariae Radix) one and a half qian; Wine-fried Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) eight fen; Chuan Lian (Toosendan Fructus) core crushed and prepared first, two qian; Bo He Jian (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba tip) added later, eight fen; Fresh Pi Ye (Eriobotryae Folium) brushed and bagged, three qian; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Xi Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis) one qian; Dan Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea) prepared first, two liang. Zhou Qiu Shu's chi pulse was chaotic, likely left chi. Left chi blazing heat and yin exhaustion means inevitable death.)
Xu Shoucun, long suffering from phlegm-cough. Meng Ying advocated Zishui Shugan (Nourishing Water and Soothing Liver) method, due to yin deficiency with depression. The patient was recovering. An acquaintance, having read some medical books, claimed yin-nourishing herbs should not be overused, and administered warming tonics. Cough returned, progressing to sore throat. Early winter, Meng Ying was consulted again. He said, "All six pulses are rapid, appearing in the water season (winter). Can he survive spring?" It came true. Many people do not differentiate yin and yang of the syndrome, only discussing the coolness or warmth of herbs, leading to many failures.
Zhu Fu, repeatedly suffered miscarriages. Took fetal-protection herbs during pregnancy with no effect. This autumn, conceived and developed cough. Meng Ying abandoned all warming tonics, prescribing purely lung-clearing agents. When questioned, he said, "Fetal instability due to yuan qi weakness requires tonification; instability due to pathogenic invasion requires treating the disease. Now, the right cun pulse is slippery, large, and pounding against the finger. Treating the disease is precisely how we protect the fetus. If one does not understand this, and merely uses common fetal-protection herbs, lung qi will become more congested, cough worse, disturbing the uterus, and the fetus will abort." The treatment was highly effective. (Note: Slippery pulse indicates phlegm-excess; large pulse here indicates yin deficiency. Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) four qian; Chen Dan Xing (Arisaema cum Bile) stewed and mixed for administration, eight fen; Fresh Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) two liang; Fresh Pi Ye (Eriobotryae Folium) brushed and bagged, three qian; Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos) bagged and prepared first, three qian; Dan Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea) prepared first, two liang; Nan Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) five qian; Qing Guo (Canarii Fructus) core prepared first, one; Bei Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix) eight qian; Fang Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla) three qian; Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) prepared first, one liang.)
Xiao Xiaoqing, wealthy and benevolent, aged thirty-five, robust. Mildly contracted winter-warmth. His doctor prescribed Ginger and Cinnamon, causing agitation. Another doctor flattered, prescribing large doses of warming tonics. After two doses, uncontrollable mania ensued. Multiple doctors were summoned, administering only a few qian of Qing Lin Wan (Clear Forest Pill). Meng Ying examined and declared the condition shattered and incurable. How important it is to be cautious with medication!
Sho Yitang's wife, aged sixty, contracted wheezing and coughing in mid-winter. Medications failed; she could not lie down for ten days. Meng Ying was consulted. Sho described that ginseng soup temporarily relieved wheezing, but sweating persisted despite tonics, fearing collapse. Pulse was wiry, slippery, and stronger on the right. Meng Ying said, "The difficulty of inspection, listening, inquiry, and palpation cannot be underestimated without internal balance. This case must be treated based on the pulse. Do not touch ginseng soup." He prescribed Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Xie Bai (Allii Macrostemi Bulbus), Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus), Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Ge Qiao (Tridacnae Concha), Fu Ling (Poria), Qing Dai (Azurite), and Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea), mixed with Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) and Fu Zhi (Radish Juice). (Note: Wiry pulse indicates liver-heat with deficiency; slippery pulse indicates phlegm-heat. Right dominance indicates phlegm-heat in the lung. Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthis Fructus) ground, four qian; Xie Bai (Allii Macrostemi Bulbus) crushed, added later, one and a half qian; Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos) bagged and prepared first, three qian; Sheng Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) ground, one and a half qian; Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix) four qian; Ku Xing Ni (Armeniacae Semen Amarum paste) two qian; Yun Ling (Poria) one and a half qian; Ge Qiao (Tridacnae Concha) crushed and prepared first, five qian; Fei Qing Dai (Azurite) one qian; Dan Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea) prepared first, two liang; Jiang Zhu Li (Zingiberis Recens汁 mixed with Bamboo Sap) one cup, Fu Zhi (Radish Juice) half cup, mixed for administration.) Effect was immediate, fully cured after ten-plus doses. At the same time, Shi Ao suffered a very similar condition. Pulse was deficient, wiry, fine, and slippery. Meng Ying added heavy doses of Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) to Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix), Ge Qiao (Tridacnae Concha), Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Sang Zhi (Mori Ramulus), and Fu Ling (Poria), achieving cure. This illustrates that diseases may be the same, but constitutions differ, making fixed formulas inadequate. (Note: Deficient, wiry, fine, slippery pulse indicates yin deficiency with concurrent yang deficiency and phlegm-turbidity. Bei Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix) four qian; Sheng Ge Qiao (Tridacnae Concha) crushed and prepared first, five qian; Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos) bagged and prepared first, three qian; Ku Xing Ni (Armeniacae Semen Amarum paste) two qian; Sheng Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) ground, two qian; Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) crushed, four qian; Wine-fried Sang Zhi (Mori Ramulus) two qian; Yun Ling (Poria) three qian; Da Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) eight qian, decocted in hot water after discarding dregs.)
Xu Fu, suffering from leg pain, prone to belching. Rubbing fingertips or wiping eyebrows triggered incessant belching. Previously considered deficiency, treated with tonics without success. Meng Ying found wiry and slippery pulse, diagnosing phlegm obstructing collaterals preventing qi diffusion. Prescription: Siguo Luo (Bambusae Caulis Retinamen), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Ju Luo (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride network), Ling Yang Jiao (Caprae Cornu), Fu Ling (Poria), Dou Juan (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), Jin Ling (Meliosmae Fructus), Shi Di (Diospyri Calyx), Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea), Bi Qi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Ou (Nelumbinis Rhizoma). Swallowed Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Sinensis Gardenia Bile Pill) for relief. His daughter-in-law, grieving son's death, suffered syncope. Repeated tonic use caused menstrual delay. Pregnancy was suspected. Meng Ying said, "Wiry, rapid, and slippery pulse indicates phlegm with wind-yang causing syncope." Prescribed large doses of phlegm-dispelling, wind-extinguishing, depression-soothing, and nutritive-clearing agents, leading to gradual recovery. (Note: Incessant belching indicates latent internal wind. Wiry-slippery pulse indicates liver wind stirring phlegm. Warming tonics scorched fluids, phlegm riding wind upward. Xue Geng (Snow Soup: Hai Zhe and Bi Qi), Ling Yang Jiao, and Chuan Lian save fluids and extinguish wind. Siguo Luo (Bambusae Caulis Retinamen) three qian; Jiang Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) three qian; Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos) silk-bagged, three qian; Jing Ju Luo (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride network) added later, one qian; Ling Yang Jiao (Caprae Cornu) prepared first for eight minutes, four qian; Yun Ling (Poria) three qian; Da Dou Juan (Sojae Semen Praeparatum) added later, three qian; Chuan Lian (Toosendan Fructus) core crushed and prepared first, four qian; Dried Shi Di (Diospyri Calyx) ten pieces; Dan Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea) prepared first, two liang; Whole Bi Qi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) one liang; Cut Ou (Nelumbinis Rhizoma) two liang. Medicine delivered Longhui Wan (Gardenia Bile Pill) three qian. Daughter-in-law's wiry-rapid-slippery pulse emphasizes slipperiness. Previous case focused on liver; this case focuses on lung. Editor's intent to teach differentiation. Phlegm-dispelling, wind-extinguishing, depression-soothing, nutritive-clearing formula: Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) crushed, eight qian; Sheng Dong Gua Zi (Benincasae Semen) four qian; Wine-fried Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) four qian; Fresh Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) two qian; Ji Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) one liang five qian; Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) prepared first, one liang; Fresh Xie Bai (Allii Macrostemi Bulbus) crushed, one and a half qian; Prepared Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) two qian; Huang Yu Jin (Curcumae Radix) one qian; Whole Bi Qi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) crushed, one liang.)
Wu Yongyan, ten years ago, read the Analects passage "not removing ginger from meals," and consumed ginger daily, even in midsummer. Three years ago, suffered massive hemorrhage. Cooled with cold herbs, but fire surged intermittently, unresolved. Late winter, consulted Meng Ying. Body did not wear cotton; head and face perspired profusely. Said, "Taking Qin Lian (Scutellaria and Coptis) worsens irritability and thirst because bitterness transforms into dryness. Using Sheng Di (Rehmannia) causes stuffiness and loss of appetite because sweetness slows the middle. Sugarcane and pear are the same." Pulse deep and slippery-rapid upon deep pressure indicates accumulated heat deeply lodged within. Prescribed Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) removing Gan Cao (Licorice) and Mi (Rice), adding Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Hua Fen (Puerariae Radix), Hai Zhe (Metulae Aurea), Bi Qi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), and Lu Dou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen), allowed free consumption. Gradually expectorated glue-like phlegm and recovered. (Treatment principle lies in the pulse. Deep pressure reveals slippery-rapid. Emphasis on 'deep'. Deep slippery-rapid indicates loss of qi ascent and descent.)
