When the Qi of the clear aspect is purified, the Qi mechanism gains authority and phlegm can be expectorated. Once phlegm is expectorated, accumulated heat departs with it. The Lung Qi gradually reaches a state of clarity and肃ness (descending and purifying), and the pain can be healed. (Prescription: Sheng Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum] 1 liang 6 qian, decocted first; Jiu Chao Zhimu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma prepared with wine] 4 qian; Xian Zhuye [Fresh Leaf of Bambusa] 2 qian; Jiang Zhuru [Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam prepared with ginger] 3 qian; Zheng Biqi [Dioscorea esculenta tuber] whole, crushed 1 liang; Dan Haifushi [Pumex] 2 liang, decocted first; Ji Yinhua [Lonicerae Japonicae Flos] 8 qian; Lüdoupi [Cortex Phaseoli Mungonis] 4 qian.)
Zhao Zixun invariably suffered from epistaxis (nosebleed) after consuming sugarcane. Some suspected that sugarcane possessed a strongly hot nature. Mengying stated: "Sugarcane is sweet and cool. However, its sweetness is too heavy; while its ability to generate fluids is sufficient, its cooling property is very slight, and its efficacy in dissipating heat is inadequate. It is most suitable for those with fluid deficiency and mild heat. It is an excellent medicine for rescuing fluids in Wind-Warmth syndromes. I name it 'Naturally Born Fumai Tang' (Recovering Pulse Decoction). If taken by those with abundant damp-heat or phlegm-fire internally, it will cause what Yu Jia Yan described as 'stomach transformation,' leading to the generation of heat. All medicines should be administered according to the patient's constitution and Qi dynamics; how can one rigidly adhere to fixed concepts of cold and heat?" Zhao Zixun's constitution was characterized by water deficiency and fire hyperactivity. The nature of sugarcane could not counteract this, but rather transformed into heat following his pathological Qi. Just as sugarcane becomes sugar when refined by fire, completely losing its original cooling nature, so too does Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus) behave similarly. (Prescription for Water Deficiency and Fire Hyperactivity: Xuanshen Pian [Scrophulariae Radix slices] 1 liang; Ming Tiandong [Asparagi Rhizoma] cut 8 qian; Tusiji Bing [Cuscutae Semen cake] 4 qian; Nüzhen Chu [Ligustri Lucidi Fructus crushed] 5 qian; Digupi [Phellodendri Cortex] 4 qian; Jiu Chao Zhimu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma prepared with wine] 4 qian; Jiu Chao Chuan Huangbai [Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex prepared with wine] 1.5 qian; Chongweizi Chu [Ecliptae Herba crushed], decocted first 4 qian; Jiao Zhipi [Gardeniae Fructus pericarpium charred] 1.5 qian; Jiu Chao Piye [Eriobotryae Folium prepared with wine], brushed and wrapped 1 piece.)
Li Huafu's second wife suffered a miscarriage (abortion with bleeding) at three months of gestation. Mengying palpated her pulse, finding it wiry, surging, and rapid. He prescribed a large dose of Dadihuang [Rehmanniae Radix], Yinhua [Lonicerae Japonicae Flos], Maogen [Imperatae Rhizoma], Baiye [Menthae Haplocalycis Folium], Qinghao [Artemisiae Annuae Herba], Baiwei [Cynanchi Atrati Radix], Huangqin [Scutellariae Radix], Xuduan [Dipsaci Radix], Lvpijiao [Colla Corii Asini], Oujie [Nelumbinis Plumulae Pedunculus], Taifa Hui [Capilli Humani Carbonis], and Haipiaoxiao [Sepiae Endoconcha]. The condition stabilized. However, she failed to rest properly. Several days later, after another fetal expulsion, severe bleeding recurred. Mengying modified the previous prescription by removing the last six herbs and adding Xijiao [Rhinocerotis Cornu], Zhuru [Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam], and Xuanshen [Scrophulariae Radix]. Others argued that cooling herbs are appropriate during pregnancy, but not postpartum. Consequently, a specialist was consulted who exclusively used warming herbs, insisting on tonification for sudden severe bleeding. After several doses, signs of deficiency became pronounced: spontaneous sweating, dizziness, aversion to noise, reluctance to speak, faint respiration, anorexia, insomnia, occasional hiccups, and persistent bleeding. Mengying was invited again and said: "This is treating a living disease with dead dogma. Blood bleeds due to heat; the fetus aborts due to bleeding. Does heat transform into cold after the fetus is expelled? Herbs such as Renshen [Ginseng Radix], Baizhu [Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma], Jianggan [Zingiberis Rhizoma], Rougui [Cinnamomi Cortex], Zonghui [Livistonae Frondis Carbonis], and Wuweizi [Schisandrae Fructus] are warming, tonifying, astringent, and sour. They not only exacerbate heat, causing blood to rush uncontrollably, but also obstruct Qi, leading to latent consumption of fluids, thereby producing the aforementioned symptoms. You may ignore the pulse, but do you not see the yellow, black, and dry tongue coating?" Therefore, he prescribed a large dose of Xijiao [Rhinocerotis Cornu], Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum], Xuanshen [Scrophulariae Radix], Zhimu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma], Huafen [Puerariae Radix], Zhuli [Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam juice], Maidong [Ophiopogonis Tuber], Yinhua [Lonicerae Japonicae Flos], Zhizi [Gardeniae Fructus], Shihu [Dendrobii Caulis], Xuanfu [Inulae Flos], Qinghao [Artemisiae Annuae Herba], and Baiwei [Cynanchi Atrati Radix]. Gradually, the spirit and Qi cleared. Ten days later, all ailments subsided. Subsequently, Xijiao was removed, and Shengdihuang [Rehmanniae Radix Recens] was added. After two months of administration, full recovery was achieved. (Pulse wiry, surging, and rapid indicates pathology in the Blood aspect with Yin deficiency and accompanying heat. Da Dadihuang [Rehmanniae Radix] 8 qian; Ji Yinhua [Lonicerae Japonicae Flos] 1 liang 5 qian; Xian Maogen [Imperatae Rhizoma fresh] 5 qian; Jiu Chao Baiye [Menthae Haplocalycis Folium prepared with wine] 1 qian; Xian Qinghao [Artemisiae Annuae Herba fresh], add later 2 qian; Xiang Baiwei [Cynanchi Atrati Radix] 3 qian; Jiu Chao Kuqin [Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine] 1.5 qian; Chuan Xuduan [Dipsaci Radix] 1.5 qian; Qing Ejiao [Colla Corii Asini] stewed and mixed, taken separately 2 qian; Gan Oujie [Nelumbinis Plumulae Pedunculus dried] 4 qian; Taifa Hui [Capilli Humani Carbonis], wrapped and decocted first 1 qian; Cu Zhi Haipiaoxiao [Sepiae Endoconcha vinegar-fried], crushed and decocted first 3 qian. Later, the last six herbs were removed from the previous formula, and Bang Xijiao [Rhinocerotis Cornu sliced] 4 qian, decocted first, was added to clear Qi and move stasis; Xuanshen Pian [Scrophulariae Radix slices], soaked, strained, and taken 1 liang, to rescue fluids and extinguish wind. Tongue coating yellow, black, and dry indicates pathology in the Qi aspect with Yin deficiency and accompanying heat. Since the syndromes differed before and after, the formulas differed accordingly. Bang Xijiao [Rhinocerotis Cornu sliced] 4 qian, Sheng Shigao [Gypsum Fibrosum] 1 liang 6 qian, these two decocted first together for four bowls; Xuanshen Pian [Scrophulariae Radix slices] 1 liang, soaked, strained, and taken; Jiu Chao Zhimu [Anemarrhenae Rhizoma prepared with wine] 4 qian; Nan Huafen [Puerariae Radix] 4 qian; Jiang Zhuli [Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam juice prepared with ginger] one large wine cup, mixed; Hua Maidong [Ophiopogonis Tuber] 4 qian; Ji Yinhua [Lonicerae Japonicae Flos] 1 liang 5 qian; Shihu [Dendrobii Caulis] decocted first 1 liang; Xuanfu [Inulae Flos], wrapped and decocted first 3 qian; Xian Qinghao [Artemisiae Annuae Herba fresh] 1.5 qian; Xiang Baiwei [Cynanchi Atrati Radix] 3 qian. Finally, Xijiao was removed, and Da Shengdi [Rehmanniae Radix Recens] 8 qian was added.)
