(This paste, also known as Kaiyu Xiaoji Paste, is generally used to treat various conditions caused by the six stagnations (wind, cold, summer-heat, dampness, qi and blood, phlegm, and food) and five accumulations. It is suitable for diseases of the middle jiao spleen and stomach, as well as cases where external contraction and internal injury are mixed, the exterior and interior are indistinguishable, and cold and heat are intermingled, which cannot be cured by a single method. Additionally, for summer-heat warm diseases and damp-warm diseases prevalent in summer, if yang pathogens (summer-heat) predominate, Xingshui Paste is suitable; if yin pathogens (dampness) predominate, this paste is suitable; or both pastes can be used together. For deficiency patterns, Jianpi Paste may be referenced. ○ This paste regulates the ascending and descending of yin and yang, promotes the circulation of qi and blood. It disperses when necessary and astringes when appropriate. When treating cold patterns, warming herbs can be added; when treating heat patterns, cooling herbs can be added, offering infinite variations. ○ This paste opens the chest and diaphragm, promotes appetite, resolves phlegm, and dissipates masses, attacking pathogenic factors without damaging the healthy qi. It is effective for hypochondriac pain due to liver qi stagnation, various abdominal pains, dysmenorrhea in women, and intestinal parasitic pain in children. It is also miraculous for malaria and dysentery.)
Treats headaches caused by external contraction of wind, cold, summer-heat, and dampness.
(The principle is the same as using Guanyin Paste applied to the heart region to treat "men dou" [a type of smallpox with obscured eruption]. ○ Method of adding herbs: For wind-cold injury, use Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang), and Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai). These can be decocted to apply to the chest and back, or stir-fried and hot-compressed on the chest and back. For summer-heat-dampness injury, use Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Elsholtziae Herba (Xiangru), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Polypori Sclerotium (Zhuling), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang). For damp-warm disease, use Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) combined with Baihu Decoction, applying as above (decocted application or stir-fried hot compression). If accompanied by food stagnation, use Xingqi Xiangsu Yin, containing Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), applied via decoction or stir-fried hot compression, or combined with the following internal injury formulas.) Internal Injury from Diet. (Internal injuries include those from overwork and those from diet.) Chest and epigastric fullness and oppression. (Food injury often results in inability to transform and transport food, leading to stagnation in the chest and abdomen, causing fullness, aversion to food, anorexia, belching with acid reflux, foul flatulence, or abdominal pain with vomiting and diarrhea. Severe cases involve fever, headache, and stabbing pain at the heart region upon palpation; this is an excess pattern suitable for resolution and drainage. ○ Apply paste to the painful area of the chest and the umbilicus, stir-frying Radish Seed (Laifuzi), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), bran, and salt for hot compression; or stir-frying Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Aurantii Fructus (Zhike), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha), Malto (Maiya), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Radish Seed (Laifuzi), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang), and salt for hot compression. For severe cases, add Bupleuri Radix (Sanleng), Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Ezhu), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), and Arecae Semen (Binglang). For cold injury, add Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Symplocos Fructus (Dingxiang), and Tsaoko Cardamomi Fructus (Caoguo); for extreme cases, add Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) and Crotonis Fructus (Baren). For heat injury, add Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen), Qingdai, and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian); for extreme cases, add Kansui Radix (Gansui) and Mirabilite (Mangxiao). This formula also has effects of resolving food, water, alcohol, qi,痞 (masses), distension, accumulation, and pain. Xiangling Pill can be used, composed of Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) and Tyrrell's Five-Limb Root (Wulingzhi), raw and processed each one liang, plus Black Morning Glory Seed (Heiqiu) and White Morning Glory Seed (Baiqiu), raw and processed each five qian, stir-fried with vinegar. This medicine moves qi without draining it, resonates without causing agitation, and acts swiftly. Adding Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Lingxian - *Note: likely refers to Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma or similar*, here interpreted as Lingxian/Wanglingxian contextually but standard is Salviae), Aurantii Fructus (Zhike), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Qingpi), Linderae Cortex (Wuyao), Corydalis Rhizoma (Yanhusu), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), and prepared Pangolin Scales (Paojia) is also excellent. ○ For spleen deficiency with loss of appetite, indigestion, and postprandial fullness, apply Jianpi Paste to the chest and umbilicus, adding Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Alpinia Oxyphylla Fructus (Yizhiren), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), and Jujubae Fructus (Dazao) for stir-fried hot compression. For internal injury with fever, stomach pain, and anorexia, apply Jianpi Paste, using Buzhong Yiqi Decoction, adding Amomi Fructus (Caokou) for cold or Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi) for heat, stir-fried and compressed. These pastes are not applicable.) Phlegm-Cough. (Cough belongs to the Lung, sputum production belongs to the Spleen; phlegm-cough arises from spleen dampness generating phlegm. Apply paste to the chest, stir-frying Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Aurantii Fructus (Zhike), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), and Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zaojiao) for hot compression to resolve phlegm and dry dampness. ○ Herbs for treating phlegm: Wind-phlegm uses Aconiti Radix (Chuanwu), Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowu), Bryoniae Radix (Baifuzi), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing), Scorpio (Quanjie), and Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiangcan); Cold-phlegm uses Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Liangjiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Qingpi/Chenpi), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Tsaoko Cardamomi Fructus (Caoguo), and Symplocos Fructus (Dingxiang); Damp-phlegm uses Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing), Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zaojiao), and Alum (Mingfan); Heat-phlegm uses Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Beimu), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen), Qingdai, and Meretricis Concha (Geafen); Opening depression uses Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), and Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng); Dispersing uses Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Aurantii Fructus (Zhike), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong); Descending uses Apricot Seed (Xingren), Perilla Fructus (Suzi), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Radish Seed (Laifuzi), and Lepidii Semen (Tinglizi); Draining uses Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Polypori Sclerotium (Zhuling), and Talcum (Huashi); Food stagnation uses Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Malto (Maiya), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha), and Arecae Semen (Binglang); Alcohol stagnation uses Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Puerariae Radix (Gegen). Old heat-phlegm uses Kansui Radix (Gansui), Pyritum (Mengshi), Arca Shell (Walengzi), and Glauber Salt (Piaoxiao); Cold-phlegm uses Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Liangjiang), Crotonis Fructus (Baren), and Black Morning Glory Seed (Heiqiu). Phlegm-fluid flowing and accumulating uses Daotan Decoction plus Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) and Turmeric Rhizome (Jianghuang), or Kongyan Dan plus Manihoti Radix (Miebie) and Cinnamomi Cortex (Guangui). Phlegm-masses: Cold uses Aconiti Radix (Caowu), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang); Heat uses Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Myrobalan (Wubeizi), Ostrea Concha (Muli), and Mirabilite (Mangxiao). Phlegm confusing the heart orifices uses Arisaematis Rhizoma (Dansheng), Curcumae Radix (Yujin), Cinnabaris (Zhusha), and Alum (Mingfan). The above herbs, depending on symptoms, can be sprinkled, decocted for application, or stir-fried for hot compression. ○ For Lung cough, use Qingfei Paste; for Stomach cough, use Qingwei Paste; for Kidney cough, use Ziyin Paste; this paste is not applicable.) Phlegm-Asthma and Wheezing. (Rapid breathing is called asthma/chuan; sound in the throat is called wheezing/xiao. ○ Asthma with strong breath and chest fullness is an excess pattern. ○ Apply paste to the chest and back; the text mentions a method of rubbing the back with Fairy Flower (Fengxianhua) which is excellent and can be imitated. ○ For wind-cold asthma, use Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong), Apricot Seed (Xingren), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang); for fire asthma, use Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Mulberry Twig (Sangzhi), Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou), Trichosanthis Radix (Huafen), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhike), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Qingdai, Meretricis Concha (Geafen), and Yuanming Fen (Mirabilite); for water asthma, use Genkwa Flos (Yuanhua), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Black Morning Glory Seed (Heiqiu), Lepidii Semen (Tinglizi), and Jujubae Fructus (Dazao); for phlegm-asthma with rebellious qi, use Daotan Decoction to descend qi, using Perilla Fructus (Suzi), Apricot Seed (Xingren), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Qingpi), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Linderae Radix (Wuyao), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang), Radish Seed (Laifuzi), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang), and Jujubae Fructus (Dazao). For those needing purgation, use Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), White Morning Glory Seed (Baiqiu), and Arecae Semen (Binglang), applied via decoction or stir-fried hot compression. For phlegm-asthma with rebellious qi, also sprinkle White Mustard Seed (Baijiezi) and raw Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing) on paste applied to the soles of the feet. ○ For yin deficiency with flaming fire causing asthma, use Qingfei Paste applied to the chest and back, and Ziyin Paste applied below the umbilicus. For deficiency-cold asthma, use Wenfei Paste applied to the chest and back, Jianpi Paste applied to the umbilicus, and Fuyang Paste applied below the umbilicus. For kidney deficiency failing to grasp qi, use Fuyang Paste sprinkled with Psoraleae Fructus (Guzhi) and Foeniculi Fructus (Huixiang) applied below the umbilicus. For yin fire counterflow and sudden collapse of true yang causing asthma and phlegm-rattling, use Fuyang Paste sprinkled with Heixi Dan applied to the umbilicus. For elderly people with urgent asthma and shortness of breath, use Dabu Paste applied to the chest and below the umbilicus. These pastes and medicines are not applicable. ○ Asthma is mostly cold enveloping heat, suitable for releasing the exterior; the text mentions Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) and Ginkgo Seed (Baiguo) for stir-fried hot compression. For loud wheezing, sprinkle Realgar (Xionghuang), Alum (Mingfan), raw Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), and Crotonis Fructus (Bashuang) in equal parts into the paste.) Phlegm-Fluid Retention. (Fluid retention belongs to yin pathogens, suitable for warming medicines. ○ Apply paste to the chest, adding herbs as mentioned above, or use Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang) combined with Kansui Radix (Gansui), Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Daji), and White Mustard Seed (Baijiezi) for stir-fried hot compression. For deficient persons, use Liujunzi Tang applied with Jianpi Paste.) Clamoring, Belching, Acid Regurgitation, and Vomiting Acid. (Clamoring is due to phlegm stirred by fire, feeling like hunger but not quite; food stagnation with heat. Belching is the release of food qi, also due to stagnant fire and damp-phlegm. Acid regurgitation is water piercing the heart; vomiting acid is spitting out sour fluid. Damp-heat stagnation preventing transformation uses Pinggan Shunqi Baozhong Fang, containing Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Qingpi), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Malto (Maiya), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Radish Seed (Laifuzi), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang), and Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru). This treats liver-stomach disharmony with qi, food, phlegm, and heat simultaneously. Applying paste to the chest and decocting for application or stir-fried hot compression is very effective. Alternatively, use Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu), and Medicated Leaven (Shenqu). For clamoring at dawn, belonging to blood deficiency, use Siwu Tang to nourish yin and blood, apply Ziyin Paste. For frequent belching unrelated to diet, belonging to qi deficiency, use Liujunzi Tang plus Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang) to invigorate spleen and regulate qi, apply Jianpi Paste; this paste is not applicable.) Nausea and Dry Heaving. (Desire to vomit but unable to, indicating phlegm and heat in the stomach. ○ Apply paste to the chest, or decoct Reedeerhorn Grass Root (Lugen) to wipe the epigastrium and sprinkle Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) powder. Or decoct Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang), Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Danning), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), and Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi) for application before pasting.) Dysphagia, Regurgitation, and Reverse Stomach. (Symptoms detailed in the text. ○ Five types of dysphagia relate to qi, food, labor, belching, and thought; five types of obstruction relate to worry, anger, qi, food, and cold. ○ For stagnation preventing food intake, wipe the chest with Ginger Juice, Chinese Chive Juice, and Cow Milk, sprinkle real Curcumae Radix (Yujin) and Fairy Flower (Fengxianzi) powder into the paste. Also stir-fry Chenmi with yellow earth and Pinggan Shunqi Baozhong Fang ingredients for hot compression to open the orifice. Or use ancient formulas for five obstructions: Apricot Seeds (Xingren) peeled and crushed, Fermented Soybean (Chidouchi) roasted into cake, Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu), and Sichuan Pepper (Shuzhao) roasted to remove sweat, all in equal parts, ground to powder, mixed with honey into pills to rub the chest several times a day. Or use Maoyangsheng's Geqi Formula: Dung Beetle (Qianglang) one, Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Beimu) three qian, Qingdai and Yuanming Fen two qian each, Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang), and Cinnabaris (Zhusha) one qian each, Niu Huang five fen, ground to powder, mixed with Ten-Thousand-Year Green (Wannianqing) juice and aged wine into balls to rub. This condition is difficult to treat, and no ancient formula guarantees efficacy. The two formulas above are one warming and one cooling, useful for emergencies, but must be rubbed frequently to hope for efficacy. ○ For blood depletion with constipation, nourish blood and moisten dryness using Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), etc., plus Persicae Semen (Taoren), Cannabis Fructus (Maren), and Chinese Chive Juice for decocted application, apply Qingwei Paste to the chest and Ziyin Paste below the umbilicus, reference Gua Lou Dao Fa, Honey Suppository, and Pig Gallbladder with vinegar enema; this paste is not applicable. ○ For cold deficiency in the stomach, use Wenwei Paste sprinkled with Symplocos Fructus (Dingxiang), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Alpinia Oxyphylla Fructus (Yizhiren), Piperis Fructus (Hujiao), and Cinnamomi Cortex (Guangui) powder applied to the stomach opening, then stir-fry Pingwei San with appropriate herbs. For reverse stomach where evening food is vomited in the morning or morning food in the evening, sour and undigested, indicating lack of fire in the lower jiao, apply Wenwei Paste to the chest, Fuyang Paste sprinkled with Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang) powder to the upper umbilicus and Mingmen point, then stir-fry Bawei Wan ingredients; reference Smelling Aconite method; this paste is not applicable.) Flip Stomach. (Food is immediately vomited after ingestion, due to phlegm-heat obstruction, different from reverse stomach which has fixed timing. ○ Apply paste to the chest, first wiping with Ginger Juice and Bamboo Shavings, or decoct the dry heaving formula.) Vomiting. (Can be cold or heat, symptoms detailed in the text, different from reverse stomach and cholera. Apply paste to the chest: for cold, sprinkle Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Dingxiang? *Text says Dingxiang*), Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Agastaches Herba (Huoxiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang); for heat, decoct Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi), and Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru) with plum for application. ○ For heart pain, anorexia, vomiting bitter/blue or sour water, it is liver stagnation. Apply paste to the chest, stir-fry Jiawei Xiaoyao San, reference Qinggan Paste. For frequent vomiting of clear water, it is spleen heat; decoct Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) to wipe, then sprinkle Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) on paste, reference Qingwei Paste. ○ For long-term illness with stomach deficiency and vomiting upon smelling food, use Wenwei Paste plus Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Eugeniae Caryophyllati Flos (Dingxiang), and Amomi Fructus (Kouren) for stir-fried hot compression; this paste is not applicable.) Cholera. (Symptoms detailed in the text. ○ Upper vomiting and lower diarrhea with abdominal pain is named Wet Cholera. Dampness above is overcome by wind-wood, causing failure of yin and yang to ascend and descend. Thirst indicates heat, no thirst indicates cold. However, since the disease exits through vomiting and diarrhea, even if severe, death is unlikely. Failure to vomit or diarrhea is Dry Cholera, caused by excessive cold-dampness binding the spleen, causing sudden pain and cold limbs, commonly known as Intestinal Colic Sha. Middle jiao blockage prevents exit, leading to death from distension. These conditions strictly forbid ginger soup, hot soup, or hot wine, as they cause immediate death. ○ Treat Wet Cholera: First wipe chest with ginger, sprinkle dried Bergamot (Chenfoshou) and dried Alum (Mingfan) powder into paste applied to chest and umbilicus. Or decoct Agastaches Herba (Huoxiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), and Arecae Catenuatae Pericarpium (Dafupi) for application. Add Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) for heat, Charred Zingiberis Rhizoma (Jiantan) for cold, Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Symplocos Fructus (Dingxiang), and Amomi Fructus (Sharen) for abdominal pain, Immature Bitter Orange (Zhike) for constipation, and Akebia Caulis (Mutong) for yellow-red urine. For summer heat with fever and thirst, decoct Huanglian, Xiangru, Houpo, Zhuling, Zexie, and Yi Yuan San to separate upper and lower, or use Huangjin Dan or Jijiu Dingzhong Wan. Both formulas contain Huanglian, Ganjiang, Chenpi, Muxiang, Sharen, Xiangfu, Jingjie, Binglang, Maiya, Cheqianzi, etc., suitable for stir-fried hot compression. Ancient treatment for cholera suggests stir-frying salt on chest and back for complete recovery; this method is excellent. In winter with heavy cold or summer with cold food injury, stir-fry salt with Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu) on chest, back, and below umbilicus, or Lizhong Tang (Baizhu, Ganjiang), or Dashun San (Ganjiang, Guangui, Xingren, Gancao) combined with Wuji San (Cangzhu, Baizhi, Houpo, Wuyu, Chenpi, Banxia, Jiegeng, Zhike) for stir-fried hot compression and binding to umbilicus. For excessive vomiting/diarrhea with cold sweat, apply Wenwei Paste to chest, then Fuzi Lizhong Tang plus Zaocinxis Terra (Zaoxintu) for abdominal stir-fried hot compression. Also, Yilizhu treats vomiting/diarrhea with Xionghuang, Kufan, Congtou, Rougui, and Shexiang applied to umbilicus with hot compression. ○ Treat Dry Cholera: Requires warming and unblocking. First wipe chest with ginger, sprinkle Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu), Amomi Fructus (Baikou), and Symplocos Fructus (Dingxiang) into paste applied to chest and umbilicus. For severe cold-coagulation abdominal pain, stir-fry Aconiti Radix (Chuanwu), Curcumae Radix (Yujin), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), Jiangxiang, Linderae Radix (Wuyao), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guangui), and Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu) with White Mustard Seed (Baijiezi). For closed orifices, use Tangqi Sha Medicine, Wolong Dan, or Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zaojiao) and Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) powder to induce sneezing by sniffing, or Riyue Dan/Renma Ping'an San drops for eyes, Suhe Wan rub on chest/back (or scrape with porcelain spoon dipped in sesame oil). Since organs connect to the back, scraping reduces pathogenic qi. For inability to vomit, induce vomiting by probing throat or inducing sneezing. For inability to defecate, use Houpo Tang method (Houpo, Zhishi, Binglang, Dahuang) for stir-fried hot compression. For muscle cramps, stir-fry Zisu, Mugua, Wuyu, Huixiang, Yanhusu, Baiyan, and vinegar. Can also use Can Sha. Reference boiling vinegar to wipe abdomen, garlic on feet. For cramps entering abdomen intolerably, use extremely salty brine to wipe and puncture Weizhong point. For fatal cramps, fill umbilicus with salt and moxa. For cold sweat and faint pulse, use Jiawei Lizhong Tang (Ganjiang, Baizhu, Fuzi, Wuyu, Guangui, Danggui, Houpo, Chenpi) for stir-fried hot compression, reference Wenwei Paste, Sanyin Paste, Fuyang Paste to warm middle and restore yang urgently. ○ Zhong'e syndrome (Wu Sha Zhang) is caused by summer-heat and turbidity, presenting with black-purple face, distension, pain, and constipation; drinking hot soup causes death. Mainly promote lung and large intestine qi. Sprinkle Zhishi on umbilicus paste, induce sneezing with Zaojiao/Xixin/Sha medicine, apply picking/scraping methods, wipe corners of eyes with ginger juice (male left, female right) to induce sweat, rub back with hair ball dipped in burning wine to guide qi down. Another method: wipe chest/back/extremities with salt until spots appear for relief. Treats all Sha distension, summer-heat, and cholera. Text also has Zhong'e formula. Note: For spot-sha, avoid Zisu, Chenpi, Banxia, Gancao. ○ Majiao Sha (Diaojiao Sha) presents with vomiting/diarrhea, cold limbs, cramps, cold sweat, faint pulse, emaciation, and sunken eyes rapidly. Treatment differs from cholera: Cholera is yang (vomiting/diarrhea is discharge); Majiao Sha is yin (vomiting/diarrhea is closure). Use ginger juice to wipe chest/back/extremities, apply Yins Sha Paste to chest/back, Fuyang Paste sprinkled with Fuzi, Paogjiang, Rougui, Dingxiang, Shexiang to umbilicus, Sanyin Paste sprinkled with processed Sulfur and Kufan to opposite umbilicus/Mingmen, two sheets of Sanyin Paste (no herbs) to knees and soles, and Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing) mixed with vinegar on soles or Piperis Fructus (Hujiao)/Guangui on hands to stop vomiting/cramps. If restlessness/thirst occurs after stopping, decoct Yu Lian Wu Mei to wipe chest cautiously. Use heat medicines only for emergency rescue, then restore yin. Do not mistake cholera for Majiao Sha and overuse heat medicines, turning mild cases severe.) Accumulation, Mass, and Qi Stagnation. (Symptoms detailed in text, all caused by qi, blood, phlegm, and food. Historically treated as痞 (pi). ○ Different from shaang pi, but shaang pi methods can be extrapolated. ○ If pain is severe and immovable, hot compress; slight pain indicates blood stasis; movable pain with no sensation to heat indicates phlegm. Small mass growing gradually, moving up/down/in/out is qi mass. Noisy mass moving left/right/up/down is phlegm-fluid. First wipe affected area with ginger, sprinkle herb powder into paste. ○ Sprinkle powder: Garlic (3 liang), Ginger and Scallion (2 liang each), pounded, add White Mustard Seed (Baijiezi), Sichuan Pepper (Huajiao), Fairy Flower (Fengxianzi), Polygoni Multiflori Caulis flower (Hongliaohua), Rhubarb (Dahuang), Mirabilite (Mangxiao), Realgar (Xionghuang), Calomelas (Qingfen), Alum (Mingfan), and Calcined Hematite (Chenduan Shi) each 2 qian, mix evenly, dry in shade. Apply small amount to paste. Can also mix with flour and vinegar for external application. Then hot compress with Wine-steamed Phytolaccae Radix (Shanglu), Wine-steamed Sanleng, Vinegar-processed Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu), or Vinegar-processed Corydalis Rhizoma (Yanhusu). Or use Wenbai Wan: Prepared Aconiti Radix (Chuanwu) 2.5 liang, Wuyu, Jiegeng, Chaihu, Changpu, Ziwan, Huanglian, Paogjiang, Rougui, Huajiao, Badou, Zexie, Zaojiao, Houpo each 1 liang, coarse powder for stir-fried hot compression. Or Wenbai Wan combined with Muxiang Zhike Wan, Dahuang, Heiqiu each 2 liang, Baizhu, Banxia, Nanxing, Muxiang, Qingpi, Chenpi, Zhike, Zhishi, Sanleng, Pengzhu, Maiya, Shenqu, Binglang, Ganjiang, Liangjiang each 1 liang, coarse powder for stir-fried hot compression and binding. Use 7-8 qian per application. For deficient persons, add Dangshen, Bazhen, or Buzhong Yiqi ingredients.) Jaundice. (Five types of jaundice, detailed in text, must distinguish yin/yang. ○ Yang jaundice is bright, due to damp-heat. Sprinkle Baizhu, Huangqin, and Yinchen powder into paste on chest/umbilicus, reference Xingshui Paste on Tianshu point beside umbilicus, plus Cangzhu, Houpo, Guang Chenpi, Yinchen, Huangqin, Huanglian, Zhizi, Longdancao, Tinglizi, Cheqianzi, Zexie, Mutong, Hanshuishi, Huashi, etc., for decocted application or stir-fried hot compression. Severe cases add Dahuang and Mangxiao for purgation. ○ Yin jaundice is dark, due to cold-damp. Sprinkle Fuzi, Ganjiang, and Yinchen powder into paste on chest/umbilicus, reference Sanyin Paste on opposite umbilicus/Mingmen, plus Cangzhu, Houpo, Chenpi, Yinchen, Chuanxiong, Chuanwu, Ganjiang, Wuyu, Qingpi, Jianghuang, Guanggui, Dingxiang, Chuanjiao, Cheqianzi, Zexie, etc., for decocted application or stir-fried hot compression. Severe cases add Fuzi. ○ Wine jaundice and Grain jaundice are yang; Female Consumption jaundice is yin; treatments are similar. ○ Plague jaundice uses Shijian Zhangdan Wan: Yinchen, Zhizi, Dahuang, Mangxiao each 1 liang, Xingren 6 qian, Changshan, Biejia, Bashuang each 4 qian, Douchi 2 liang. This formula has sweating, vomiting, and purging methods, suitable for acute conditions, applied via decoction or stir-fried hot compression, not just for warm jaundice. ○ Text mentions Bitter Melon Stem Powder snuffing, Nanxing on umbilicus, Herb Tube Moxibustion on umbilicus, Ginger/Yinchen eye drop/body wipe, and East-flowing Peach Branch bath, all referencable.) Edema. (Excess dampness causes loose stools, severe cases cause water closure and swelling. Swelling starting head/feet then abdomen is edema; swelling starting abdomen then extremities is distension. ○ Water diseases have ten types, must distinguish yin/yang. ○ Yang water swells upper body first, with fever and constipation. Apply paste to chest/umbilicus, reference Xingshui Paste beside umbilicus, add Wupi Yin, Bazheng San, Shujian Yinzi, Sanhua Shenwan, etc., for decocted application or stir-fried hot compression and binding. ○ Yin water swells lower body first, with cold limbs and free stool. Apply paste to chest/umbilicus, reference Sanyin Paste opposite umbilicus, add Muxiang Shunqi Tang, Shenqi Wan, Shipi San, Fuyuan Dan ingredients, for decocted application or stir-fried hot compression and binding. ○ Mild cases: Apply paste to chest/umbilicus, use Pingwei San and Wuling San ingredients for decocted application or stir-fried hot compression, reference Jianpi Paste. ○ Swelling above waist: Induce sweating with Mahuang, Cangzhu, Gancao, Douchi, Shengjiang for chest/back wipe. Swelling below waist: Promote urination with Mutong, Cheqianzi, Jiaomu, Heiqiu, Congbai for chest/abdomen wipe. For lung asthma/panting, use Xingren, Beimu, Fangji, Sangbaipi, Tinglizi, Chenpi, Jiegeng, Mutong, Zhike, Suzi, Fupi, Shengjiang, Dazao, Huajiao. For arm swelling, apply paste to arm muscles; leg swelling to calf; foot swelling to instep, but always apply one sheet to chest/umbilicus to prevent fluid returning to abdomen. ○ Text mentions Xiaoheping on umbilicus, Gaizou Xiaobian, Danfang Qishu for bowels, all referencable.) Distension and Fullness. (Seven types: cold, heat, grain, water, qi, blood, gu. Symptoms detailed. Dongyuan said cold distension is more common than heat. ○ Distinguish five-zang and six-fu distension by onset and severity site (e.g., cough/asthma=Lung, hypochondriac pain=Liver). Spleen/stomach issues reduce appetite; other organs do not. Skin/meridian issues do not affect appetite; gut/membrane issues reduce appetite; severe cases block five zangs, causing breathlessness and anorexia, critical. ○ Early abdominal distension is qi, move qi; later becomes water, move water. ○ Apply paste to chest/umbilicus, choose specific herbs with Houpo as chief. Cold: Wuyu, Banxia, Ganjiang, Fuzi, Guanggui, Heiqiu. Heat: Huanglian, Baishao, Zhizi, Zhimu, Zhishi, Dahuang. Grain: Maiya, Shenqu, Sanleng, Ezhu, Binglang. Water: Cangzhu, Fangji, Tinglizi, Gansui, Zexie. Qi: Muxiang, Wuyao, Zhike, Jianghuang, Qingpi, Fupi, Laifuzi. Blood: Chuanxiong, Danggui, Yanhusu, Lingzhi, Honghua, Taoren, Jiucai. Sprinkle, decoct, or stir-fry hot compress. Ancient saying: "Purgation cures distension." This is a purgative method, but paste differs from oral meds, avoiding rapid but temporary relief.)
