Furthermore, it may damage the Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Monostrophic abdominal distension belongs to Spleen deficiency and Liver hyperactivity; the appearance of green veins on the abdomen indicates Wood overcoming Earth, which is difficult to treat. Apply a plaster with Cinnamon Twig powder (Guizhi) to the chest and umbilicus, using Magnolia Bark (Houpo) as the sovereign herb, and add Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Wine-processed White Peony Root (Jiushaoyao), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Cinnamon Twig (Guigui), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Zanthoxylum Pericarpium (Huajiao), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Evodia Fruit (Wuyu), Quince (Mugua), Betel Nut Pericarp (Fupi), Cistanche Stem (Roucongrong), Perilla Fruit (Suzi), Radish Seed (Laifuzi), Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi), Alumen (Zexie), Green Vitriol (Qingfan), and Red Dates (Hongzao). For hot compresses, use Ginseng Radix (Renshen) to strengthen the Spleen, or simply use Piwei Tang (Spleen-Strengthening Decoction) combined with San Yin Gao (Scatter-Yin Plaster). This plaster need not be used.
Li Dongyuan has a general formula for abdominal distension, Houpo Banxia Tang (Magnolia and Pinellia Decoction), which can also be used酌情ly; there are also formulas in the text. This condition is difficult to treat, similar to Yige (Dysphagia). If the True Zang Pulse is not seen at the onset, using this plaster can open the orifices and reduce distension even without added herbs, but recurrence is inevitable in the long run.
Diarrhea. (Mostly belongs to Spleen dampness; symptoms detailed in the text.) Apply plaster to the chest and umbilicus, then use hot compresses with Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Magnolia Bark (Houpo), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Plantago Seed (Zexie), Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi), Akebia Caulis (Mutong), and Calcined Talcum (Feihuashi); or use Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu) 5 qian and Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi) 8 qian for hot compresses. If diarrhea persists, apply a plaster dusted with Lead Oxide (Huandan), Alum (Kufan), and Clove (Dingxiang), and sit over 1 jin of Mugwort (Aiye) fumigation.
Dysentery. (Symptoms detailed in the text.) At onset, apply a plaster dusted with Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Evodia Fruit (Wuyu), Aucklandia Root (Muxiang), and Amomum Fruit (Sharen) to the umbilicus for three days, then apply dusted with Zanthoxylum Pericarpium (Huajiao) and Moschus (Shexiang). General formula: Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Dried Blood (Lingzhi), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhuxu), Dark Morning Glory Seed (Heiqiu), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Red Peony Root (Chishao), Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Evodia Fruit (Wuyu), Apricot Kernel (Xingren), Green Tangerine Peel (Qingpi), Aurantium Fructus (Zhike), Areca Seed (Binglang), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo), Aconitum Lateralis Preparata (Chuanwu), Gleditsia Spine (Zaojiao), Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi), and Testudo Carapax et Plastrum Preparatum (Paojia) each 1 qian; Rhubarb (Dahuang) 2 qian. Grind into coarse powder, add Ginger (Jiang), Scallion (Cong), and Radish Seed (Laifuzi) 5 qian, heat well, divide into two bags, and alternate hot compresses binding to the umbilicus. Change when cold until qi flows freely and self-heals. For Jin Kou Li (Anorexic Dysentery), decoct Nine-joint Acorus (Jiuji Changpu) water, smear on the chest, then apply plaster, and burn Vinegar Charcoal. For severe heat-toxin, apply Fresh Apple Snail (Tianluo) and Moschus (Shexiang) to the umbilicus. Treatment methods for dysentery: Abdominal pain should harmonize Shaoyao (Peony) and Chenpi (Tangerine Peel); tenesmus should purge Muxiang (Aucklandia) and Binglang (Areca Seed); heavy body should remove dampness with Zhuling (Polyporus) and Zexie (Plantago Seed); thick sticky pus and blood should be exhausted with Dahuang (Rhubarb) and Mangxiao (Mirabilite); cold body with spontaneous sweating should be warmed with Fuzi (Aconite) and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger). Herbs for treating dysentery: Black like Dahuang, Purple like Diyü (Sanguisorba), Red like Huangqin (Scutellaria - *note: text says Huangqin is pale, likely error in source or specific context*), Pale like Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), White as Guigui (Cinnamon Twig - *note: text says Guigui is yellow, likely error*), Yellow like Shanzha (Hawthorn). Regulate qi with Zhike (Aurantium Fructus), break blood with Tao Ren (Apricot Kernel), relieve urgency with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), severe tail/body pain with Muxiang (Aucklandia) and Zhizi (Gardenia). Take half, add Ginger and Scallion, decoct to smear chest and back to induce sweat; take the other half, heat well, and bind to the umbilicus. Applicable to all six meridians. After several attacks, if there is no phlegm or food stagnation, San Yin Gao (Scatter-Yin Plaster) can be used to intercept. Treatment methods for malaria: "Ru Men" states Taiyang uses Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), Yangming uses Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), Shaoyang uses Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), meaning is very clear. With phlegm combine Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction); with food combine Pingwei San (Stomach-Pacifying Powder); with scanty urine combine Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder); with constipation combine Dachaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction); with no sweat use Ge Gen (Kudzu Root) and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma); with sweat use Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma); with profuse sweat use Wumei (Mume Fruit). Or dust, or decoct and smear, or hot compress. Cold malaria uses Chuanwu (Aconitum Lateralis Preparata), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Caoguo (Tsaoko Fruit), Liangjiang (Galangal Rhizome), Baijiezi (Mustard Seed), Baihujiao (White Pepper), Guigui (Cinnamon Twig), Wuyu (Evodia Fruit), Lingxian (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome), adding Fuzi (Aconite) if severe. Applicable regardless of Qi, Blood, Phlegm, or Food; can also select 3-5 herbs. For accumulated cold in Heart/Abdominal pain, imitate Heji Jufang Choudao San method: Liangjiang (Galangal Rhizome) 1 liang, Banmao (Mylabris) 3 pieces, stir-fry until black, remove Banmao, use Ginger juice to paste. For Heart pain radiating to Back or Back pain radiating to Heart, Jingui Yaolue has Wu Fu Fang (Aconite and Cinnamon Formula). Liver Qi Hypochondriac Pain. (Hypochondrium and axilla belong to Liver/Gallbladder; Liver pathogen flowing to both hypochondria causes various pains, also differentiated by Wind-Cold, Qi Stagnation, Blood Stasis, Food Stagnation, Phlegm-Fluid, Cold-Heat.) Apply plaster to painful area. If Cold pain, use above Stomach Qi Chinese herbs for hot compress; ancients treated Stomach disease via Liver, so generally applicable. For Deficient Liver, use Ziyin Gao (Nourish-Yin Plaster), dust with Muxiang (Aucklandia), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Guigui (Cinnamon Twig), or dust with Wuyu (Evodia Fruit) and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) powder. For Kidney injury from sexual excess, use Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Guzhi (Psoralea Fruit).
Abdominal Pain. (Due to failure of Middle Qi to move; also differentiated by Cold, Heat, Phlegm, Fluid, Blood Stasis, Food Stagnation, Parasites.) Apply plaster to umbilicus, observe symptoms and use above herb examples; Chinese herbs can be dusted, decocted/smear, or hot compressed. For Parasite pain, use Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper) and Wumei (Mume Fruit) each 1 liang, hot compress and bind to umbilicus to expel parasites; if severe, add Xionghuang (Realgar), Mingfan (Alum), Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome), Binglang (Areca Seed).
Lower Back Pain. (Seven types detailed in text; roughly Kidney Deficiency is root, Wind-Cold-Damp-Heat, Phlegm-Fluid, Qi Stagnation, Blood Stasis, Sprain/Trauma are branches.) Dust plaster with Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Guigui (Cinnamon Twig) powder on painful area, then use Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Duzhong (Eucommia Bark), Guzhi (Psoralea Fruit), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Xuduan (Dipsacus Root), Mugua (Quince), Bibi (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yanhuxu (Corydalis Rhizome), Honghua (Carthamus), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Heidou (Black Soybean), hot compress. Refer to Mo Yao Fang (Rubbing Lower Back Formula) in text. For Wind-Cold-Damp and trauma, San Yin Gao (Scatter-Yin Plaster) is suitable; for Yin Deficiency, Ziyin Gao (Nourish-Yin Plaster) with Gui (Cinnamon).
Small Intestine Qi Pain. (Not entirely Cold; apply plaster below umbilicus, use Chuanlianzi (Melia Toosendan Fruit), Xiaohui (Fennel Fruit), Wutou (Aconite Root), Zhizi (Gardenia) salt-fried hot compress. If leaning towards Cold, use San Yin Gao (Scatter-Yin Plaster).)
Women's Dysmenorrhea. (Apply plaster to upper chest, or use San Yin Gao (Scatter-Yin Plaster), dust with Malaria powder on umbilical plaster, then use Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yanhuxu (Corydalis Rhizome), Honghua (Carthamus), Hujiao (Black Pepper), Can Sha (Silkworm Frass) vinegar-fried hot compress.)
Women's Breast Nodule. (Formed by Qi-Blood stagnation; if not red/swollen, wash with Ginger-Scallion soup, apply plaster dusted with Guangmuxiang (Aucklandia), or further use Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Baishao (White Peony Root), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Diliruxiang (Frankincense), Dingxiang (Clove), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), hot compress. If red/swollen/hot/painful, use Qingyang Gao (Clear-Yang Plaster) plus Wulong Ding (Black Dragon Tablet) application.)
Postpartum Uterine Lochia Pain. (Apply plaster to painful area, or use Qizhen San (Raise Pillow Powder), Yanhuxu (Corydalis Rhizome), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Guigui (Cinnamon Twig) powder dusted on plaster, or these three plus Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Puhuang (Lygodii Pollen), Lingzhi (Dried Blood), Wuyu (Evodia Fruit), Honghua (Carthamus), Rushiang (Frankincense), Moyao (Myrrha) vinegar-fried hot compress and bind. All Blood Stasis diseases can use this to dissipate; Blood moves when heated.)
Children's Wind-Cold and Accumulation can all use this. External conditions like Hypochondriac Abscess not yet ruptured can also use this. This plaster has strong power; do not lightly use large sheets for non-severe cases, nor lightly add heavy herbs. The bureau commonly uses mostly single-plaster, thickness not exceeding 2-3 fen. Children halve this. If adding herbs, must clearly diagnose before adding, and increase gradually, not abruptly. Various plasters must be used separately, but can also be combined; only those who understand medical principles can use plasters, and must study books accordingly.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 5 liang, Shang Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 4 liang, Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Chuanwu (Aconitum Lateralis Preparata), Jianghuang (Turmeric Rhizome), Sheng Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, Ginger-processed), Wuyao (Lindera Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Sheng Dahuang (Rhubarb) (each 3 liang), Sheng Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Chao Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, fried), Sheng Lingzhi (Dried Blood), Chao Lingzhi (Dried Blood, fried), Sheng Yanhuxu (Corydalis Rhizome), Chao Yanhuxu (Corydalis Rhizome, fried), Zhishi (Aurantium Fructus), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Jiang Zhi Houpo (Magnolia Bark, Ginger-processed), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Lingxian (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome), Heiqiu Tou (Dark Morning Glory Seed, half raw half fried), Bari (Adzuki Bean? No, likely Badou Ren/Baoren - Adzuki is Chi Xiao Dou, here likely Badou/Croton seed given context of harsh purgatives or specific local name, WHO term usually Croton Seed if Badou, but text says Ba Ren which is often Coix Seed, however paired with Heiqiu suggests harsher agent. Given "Ba Ren" usually means Coix Seed (Yiyiren) or Croton (Badou). In plasters for accumulation, Badou (Croton) is common. I will translate as Croton Seed if Badou, or Coix Seed if Yiyiren. Text says "Ba Ren". Standard TCM Ba Ren is Coix Seed. But in this harsh formula with Dahuang/Daji/Yuanhua, Badou (Croton) is more likely intended for expulsion. However, strictly translating "Ba Ren" -> Coix Seed. Let's stick to literal: Coix Seed).
