(This plaster promotes the free flow of water passages and treats diseases caused by damp-heat in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and intestines/stomach, working in conjunction with Jin Xian Plaster. For deficiency patterns, Jian Pi Plaster may be referenced. ○
This plaster primarily functions to "receive" (Nà). For cases where the chest and diaphragm feel constrained and appetite is desired, Jin Xian Plaster must be used; this plaster primarily functions to "excrete" (Chū). For cases requiring the venting and guiding of the two fu organs (large and small intestines), this plaster must be used. Neither plaster should be neglected.)
It generally manages summerheat-dampness.
Water retention failing to disperse. (Water retention refers to accumulation caused by excessive drinking. If water qi affects the upper jiao, there is dry retching, and if yang-water invades, vomiting occurs; in the middle jiao, there is epigastric stuffiness, fullness, and pain; in the lower jiao, heat enters the Bladder causing difficult urination. ○ Additionally, if water stagnates below the heart, ascending to the head it causes dizziness; invading the Heart it causes palpitations; affecting the Lungs it causes coughing; transmitting to the Stomach it causes vomiting; overflowing into the skin it results in edema; soaking the Stomach it leads to diarrhea. The plaster is applied to the upper, middle, or lower regions according to the pathology, with additional medicated powders sprinkled as needed. ○ Note: In treating disease, one must investigate the etiology. When treating water disorders, if one does not recognize the pathogenic factor as water, treating retching for retching, coughing for coughing, or epigastric fullness/diarrhea for those symptoms, while applying fixed formulae blindly, appears correct but is actually erroneous. This is what is meant by a crude practitioner who fails to identify the source of disease. These records are provided to illustrate that etiologies differ and require careful discernment.) Some present as Zheng Tong (palpitations/anxiety).
(Which is Ji (palpitation); apply plaster to the chest/heart area.) Dry retching and vomiting. (Make balls of fresh Ginger Rhizome [Sheng Jiang] and Pinellia Tuber [Ban Xia], rub on the back, then apply plaster.) Epigastric stuffiness, fullness, and pain. (Apply to the painful area, or sprinkle Coptis Rhizome [Huang Lian] and Pinellia Tuber [Ban Xia] powder.) Phlegm-fluid retention. (Add Kong Xian Dan [Control Salivation Pill] into the plaster base, then apply.) Water-induced asthma and cough. (Decoct Perilla Seed [Su Zi], Lepidium Seed [Ting Li Zi], Pinellia Tuber [Ban Xia], Mulberry Bark [Sang Bai Pi], Akebia Caulis [Mu Tong], Morning Glory Seed [Hei Chou], and Piper Betle Seed [Jiao Mu]; apply the decoction to the chest, then overlay with plaster.) Water-binding in the Chest. (Rub with fresh Ginger Rhizome first, then apply; or use the Ning Xue Tang method from the text; or directly decoct Shi Zao Tang [Ten Date Decoction], apply the liquid, then overlay with plaster.) Yang Jaundice of the Gallbladder. (Apply to chest and umbilicus ○ See formulas in text.) Yang-type Edema and Fullness. (Apply to chest and umbilicus ○ See formulas in text.) Heat-distension. Yellow-red urine. (Indicates heavy damp-heat; apply plaster to chest, umbilicus, and below umbilicus; decoct Ophiopogon Tuber [Mai Dong], Houttuynia Herb [Zhu Ye - *Note: Text says Zhu Ye which is Bamboo Leaf, usually Bambusae Caulis Internodium*, here interpreted as Bamboo Leaf based on context of clearing heat], and Akebia Caulis [Mu Tong]; apply decoction to chest.) Or lower abdominal fullness and urgency. (Damp-heat sinking downward; apply plaster to lower abdomen.) Or dysuria with inability to pass urine. (Decoct Scutellaria Root [Huang Qin], Plantago Seed [Che Qian Zi], Akebia Caulis [Mu Tong], and Gardenia Fruit [Hei Shan Zhi]; wash the lower umbilical area with the decoction, then apply plaster.) Or Heat-Lin syndrome. (Sprinkle Niter [Xiao Shi] powder below the umbilicus; combine with Qing Yang Plaster and Jin Xian Plaster applied to chest and umbilicus; both plasters can unblock Lin syndrome ○ Formulas also in text.) Stool. Loose diarrhea. (Caused by excess dampness; apply plaster above umbilicus, or use Jin Xian Plaster.) Or constipation with inability to pass stool. (Caused by excess heat; apply plaster above umbilicus and on both sides at Tian Shu acupoint, or sprinkle Mirabilite [Mang Xiao] for application. For severe water qi, decoct Magnolia Bark [Zhi Ke], Areca Seed [Bing Lang], Rhubarb Rhizome [Da Huang], and Morning Glory Seed [Hei Chou]; apply decoction then overlay with plaster; or grind into powder, mix with egg white, and apply; reference the bowel-unblocking formula in the text.) Or Intestinal Hemorrhoids. (Damp-heat sinking downward; apply plaster above umbilicus; combine with Qing Yang Plaster applied to anus.) Also heavy sensation in shoulders and back, pain in joints. (Damp-heat clashing; apply plaster to the back and painful areas.) Hong Jiao Jiao (Beriberi/Foot Rot) swelling and pain. (Damp-heat competing; damp causes swelling, heat causes pain; apply plaster to umbilicus and painful areas, plus Cang Bai San [Cang Zhu and Bai Zhu Powder] for foot rot. If pathogen enters abdomen and rushes to the heart, add Evodia Fruit [Wu Yu], Papaya [Mu Gua], Areca Seed [Bing Lang], Rhubarb Rhizome [Da Huang], and Salt; stir-fry hot, apply compress and bind, or mix and apply to abdomen. If pathogen enters Kidney, presenting with darkening of eyes/forehead, lumbar swelling, urinary obstruction, and upward rushing asthma, add Aconite Lateral Root [Fu Zi] mixed with saliva, apply to sole of foot to guide heat downward.) Women's leukorrhea. (If due to damp-heat, apply plaster above and below umbilicus, adding herbs as appropriate.) ○ External lesions where damp-heat condenses into toxin. Damp-heat causing skin ulceration can all be treated. ○ Upper region: apply to chest/heart area. Middle region: apply to umbilicus and flanks. Lower region: apply to Dan Tian and affected areas.
