The head is the summit of all Yang meridians. Left-sided headache belongs to wind and blood deficiency generating wind; Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) are indicated. If due to blood deficiency, Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) are used. Right-sided headache belongs to phlegm-dampness; Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) are indicated. If due to heat, Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine) is the main herb. Severe pain indicates fire; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) are used. Treating headache requires the use of Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma). If not cured, add guiding herbs according to the meridian: Taiyang (Taiyang Meridian) uses Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma); Yangming (Yangming Meridian) uses Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix); Shaoyang (Shaoyang Meridian) uses Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix); Taiyin (Taiyin Meridian) uses Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma); Shaoyin (Shaoyin Meridian) uses Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma); Jueyin (Jueyin Meridian) uses Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus). In cases of severe headache, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) must be added. For vertex headache, Bencao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma) is required, and Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma) should be reduced. If the headache is due to both Qi and Blood deficiency, Tiao Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Regulate the Middle and Boost Qi Decoction) is used, with 3 fen of Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma), 3 fen of Manjingzi (Vittariae Spora), and 3 fen of Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) added internally; the effect is miraculous. Generally, headaches and dizziness caused by Phlegm-Fire, resulting from fire and phlegm, should mostly have Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) and Jiuhuangqin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine) added to clear heat. One should not lightly use Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma) or Manjingzi (Vittariae Spora); using aged tea as a guide makes it more stable.
Shoulder and back pain that prevents turning the head backward indicates stagnation and obstruction of Qi in the Taiyang (Taiyang Meridian); disperse it with Wind-dispelling herbs. Pain in the spine and stiffness in the neck, where the waist feels like it will break and the neck feels like it is being pulled out, indicate blockage in the Taiyang (Taiyang Meridian). Pain in the limbs and joints requires Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix). If thin individuals suffer from limb and joint pain, it is due to Blood deficiency; Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) should be used with added Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jiuchao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix stir-fried with wine), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex); if accompanied by fatigue and weakness with limb and joint pain, add... Deafness is generally attributed to Heat; Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) is required to descend Fire. Tinnitus must be treated with Longdan Xiegan Tang? No, text says Longhui Wan (Long Dan Xie Gan Wan? No, text says Long Hui Wan - likely referring to a specific formula, here translated as Longhui Pill); take it after meals. Generally, this condition arises from habitual consumption of alcohol and rich flavors, leading to pre-existing Phlegm-Fire in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner); treating it by clearing phlegm and descending fire is appropriate. For other cases of tinnitus and deafness, taking one course of Huanshao Dan (Restore Youth Pill) is most effective. The formula is found in the "Deficiency and Damage" section.
Fang Gu'an said: Left-sided deafness is common in women because they are prone to anger; right-sided deafness is common in men because they are prone to sexual desire; bilateral deafness is common among the wealthy because they consume excessive rich and sweet foods.
The Classics state: The lower part of the body below the waist belongs to the Kidney (Shen), governing Damp-Heat and Kidney deficiency. Stasis of Blood, accumulated Phlegm, sprains/contusions, and a large pulse indicate Kidney deficiency. Use Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum calcined), along with Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus), Bei Wuwei (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), etc., ground into powder, and formed into pills with Pig Spinal Cord for oral administration. A choppy pulse indicates Stasis of Blood; use Buyin Wan (Nourish Yin Pill) with added Taoren (Persicae Semen) and Honghua (Carthami Flos). A slow pulse indicates Damp-Heat; use Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Chuanxiong (Cyperi Rhizoma), etc. For Phlegm accumulation, use Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) with added Nanxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum). For any symptoms belonging to Fire, do not use cold medicines harshly; treating lower back pain requires the use of Lujiaojiao (Cervi Cornus Colla).
