On the Predisposition of Thin Individuals to Fire
The Heavenly Master said: "It is widely known that thin individuals are prone to excessive fire. However, the excess of fire stems from the insufficiency of water. Without replenishing water to subdue the hyperactive yang (yang light), how can one extinguish the fierce flames? The prescription consists of Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) 3 liang, Scrophularia Root (Xuan Shen) 8 liang, Raw Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) 4 liang, Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong) 3 liang, White Peony Root (Bai Shao) 5 liang, Moutan Cortex (Dan Pi) 3 liang, Glehnia Root (Sha Shen) 2 liang, Groundcherry Root Bark (Di Gu Pi) 5 liang, Asparagus Tuber (Tian Dong) 3 liang, and Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi) 5 qian. Each ingredient is ground into powder, mixed with honey, and formed into pills. Additionally, Mulberry Leaf (Sang Ye) 6 liang is ground into powder and incorporated into the mixture. Take 5 qian daily with warm boiled water. (Annotation: Tian Yin Tang / Add-Yin Decoction.) The brilliance of this formula lies in Xuan Shen's ability to clear floating fire while harmonizing the yang of the five zang organs. Since the yin nature predominates over the yang nature in these herbs, yin qi will surpass yang qi, naturally achieving a state where yin prevails and yang declines. Thus, there is no need to indiscriminately use Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao) or Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu). Although Gypsum and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma are potent agents for clearing heat and purging fire and should not be entirely discarded, they are suitable only at the initial stage when fire is rampant and heat is extreme, to rescue yin fluids from being scorched dry. They should not be used after the fire has subsided and heat has receded, as doing so would impair the transformative function of yang qi. This is the method for treating thin individuals."
Lord Zhang said: "Excellent. I also prescribe a decoction for thin individuals prone to fire. The prescription consists of Scrophularia Root (Xuan Shen) 1 liang, Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong) 3 qian, Asparagus Tuber (Tian Dong) 3 qian, Raw Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) 3 qian, Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) 3 qian, Cornus Fruit (Shan Zhu Yu) 1 qian, Schisandra Berry (Bei Wu Wei Zi) 5 fen, White Peony Root (Bai Shao) 3 qian, Moutan Cortex (Dan Pi) 2 qian, White Mustard Seed (Bai Jie Zi) 1 qian, and Licorice Root (Gan Cao) 5 fen. Decoct in water and take orally. (Annotation: Qu Xin Tang / Remove-Firewood Decoction.) This formula consists entirely of yin-nourishing herbs but does not cause stagnation in the stomach. Regular consumption by thin individuals will prevent invasion by fire syndromes."
Lord Hua said: "Agreed; nothing further to add."
On Pain in Hands and Feet, Visceral Knots, Stiffness of the Neck, and Facial Paralysis
The Heavenly Master said: "Moxibustion-massage therapy (Mo Zhi) refers to treating diseases through stroking and massage. Examples include pain in the hands and feet, visceral knots (Jie), stiffness of the neck, and facial paralysis (Kou Yan Wai Xie). The method requires manual massage to promote the circulation of qi and blood, facilitating the resolution of phlegm and disease. For pain in the hands and feet: One person holds the patient's body, while two others use their legs to clamp each of the patient's feet. Gently beat each foot several thousand times until the feet feel slightly relieved. Then, grasp the area around the Zusanli acupoint (ST-36) on the lower leg, gently extend it seven times. Release the feet, then grasp both hands of the patient and knead them for a thousand strokes before stopping. Perform this on both left and right sides. Within one day, the pain in the hands and feet can be resolved. For visceral knots: One person presses and rubs the patient's lower abdomen. The pressure must not be slow, nor fast; not heavy, nor light. This is the most difficult technique, requiring a balance of moderation. Rub for several thousand times until the abdomen feels rollingly hot. At this point, the patient should mentally focus on the illness, swallow saliva gently, and guide it down to the Qi Hai acupoint (CV-6) in the dantian, repeating seven times. Continue this for seven days, and the knots will dissipate. Stiffness of the neck is caused by wind. One person holds the patient's lower body, while another uses a clenched fist to shake the neck for several thousand times, then releases. Deeply press the Fengmen acupoint (BL-12); after a while, the soreness and pain within will cease. The patient then sits up independently, swallows saliva gently, guides it to the dantian seven times, and recovers fully within one day. For facial paralysis: One person holds the patient's body, another pinches the earlobe on the unaffected side, and a third massages the paralyzed side of the face for several hundred times until the face feels hot. After a short while, the mouth and eyes return to normal. These are all methods of massage therapy."
