Tian Shi (Heavenly Master) said: The term "Jie" (Resolution/Dissolution) refers to the situation where pathogenic factors gather in one location, and then are decomposed and dispersed. This is similar to conditions such as Jie Xiong (Chest Binding). When a patient has just recovered from Shang Han (Cold Damage disease), the Zang-Fu organs have been without food intake for a long time. If they suddenly eat a full meal, the meridians will all rise up in contention. Unfortunately, the Fire of the Stomach Meridian is blazing; a single bowl of food is insufficient to satisfy its own consumption, let alone be distributed to other meridians. Consequently, they will inevitably contend with each other, leaving the Stomach Meridian exhausted. It retains the food without vomiting it out, causing clamor and disturbance among the Zang-Fu organs, while the Stomach Meridian stubbornly refuses to expel it. So, what is the treatment method? One must hold the fortress and wait, keeping the abdomen empty to defend, so that the enemy will naturally disperse. Since the conflict arose due to lack of food, if there is no grain or fodder, the situation cannot be sustained for long. The enemy will naturally attack the pass from below and retreat without fighting. Taking advantage of their dispersal and flight, one may slightly assist with troops, claiming to pursue them, but in reality, still employing reconciliation strategies, so that both sides return to harmony. The prescription uses Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) 1 liang, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) 1 liang, decocted in two bowls of water and taken orally. The brilliance of this formula lies not in attending to the Fire in the Stomach, nor in eliminating food stagnation in the Stomach, but solely in clarifying the Qi in the Lung, and dissipating the floating flames of the Heart and Kidney. Once the Heart, Kidney, and Lung meridians have withdrawn their forces, how can the Liver Meridian, with its small contingent, cause difficulty? The Spleen and Stomach are interdependent like lips and teeth. Previously, they merely chased together, raising a great noise, without actual combat. Now that the Fire of the Heart, Liver, Lung, and Kidney has gathered its troops, the Spleen organ will also remain at peace. However, if one encounters Jie Xiong syndrome and immediately administers this formula, it will not only be ineffective but also harmful. Therefore, upon encountering Jie Xiong disease, one must allow the patient to fast for several days before administering this formula. This ensures success every time, representing one method of "Jie" (Resolution).
Zhang Gong said: Truly a wondrous and extraordinary text. Regarding Jie Xiong syndrome, I did not expect such unique insights. Only Tian Shi could achieve this. I wish to add a word, but it is impossible. One cannot discuss medicine without knowledge penetrating Heaven and Humanity; one cannot talk about medical principles without insight spanning ancient and modern times; one cannot annotate medical texts without exhausting the study of formularies. Thus, finding such talent is the most difficult task. From ancient times to the present, few individuals emerge per generation. Let us not speak of the Yuan Dynasty; within the three hundred years of the Ming Dynasty, only a few people emerged. Li Binhu (Li Shizhen) possessed erudition, Miu Zhongchun (Miu Xi Yong) had discernment, Xue Lizhai (Xue Ji) had wisdom, and recently, Li Shicai (Li Zhong Zi) had versatility, while Yu Jiayan (Yu Chang) had clarity and penetration. You, my son, possess grandeur and freedom. Those I mentioned were born under auspicious stars, gathering the spiritual essence of mountains and rivers. Since you are now permitted to write books, do not regard yourself as insignificant. Writing should be grand and unrestrained. The Way of Medicine has reached its utmost limit, transforming into spirit and divinity.
Method of Resolution: There are also cases where patients suffer from internal injury, presenting with headache, eye pain, heart and hypochondriac pain, generalized body pain, and hand and foot pain. These are all caused by the depression and steaming of Liver Qi. If one treats the head when the head hurts, and the feet when the feet hurt, when will the treatment ever end? One must address the key aspect first, and the remaining symptoms will heal themselves without specific treatment. The prescription uses Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 5 qian, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 3 qian, Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 3 qian, Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) 3 qian, Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) 3 qian, Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) 3 qian, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 3 qian, Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 1 qian, Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) 1 qian, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. The brilliance of this formula lies in using Bai Shao as the Sovereign herb, Chai Hu as the Minister herb, and herbs that dispel wind and resolve phlegm as Assistant and Envoy herbs. After one dose, hypochondriac pain disappears; after two doses, all pains subside; after three doses, the whole body becomes tranquil. This truly grasps the essentials and achieves marvels, representing the most exquisite method of resolution. Applied to internal injury syndromes, it yields particularly miraculous results. I hope people diligently use it, reaping boundless merit.
