At the initial stage of this eye disease, the patient experiences dizziness and pain in the forehead and temporal regions, extending to the orbital bones and nasal-cheek bones. The interior of the eyes feels painful and dry, with visual disturbances such as seeing flowers (photopsia or floaters). This may be caused by vomiting or nausea, or occurring after retching, leading to the onset of symptoms in one eye first. Subsequently, the other eye is involved, resulting in bilateral damage. Visual phenomena resembling flowers appear before the eyes, varying in color from red to black. This condition arises due to exhaustion and injury of the Liver and Lungs. It is advisable to administer Lingyangjiao Yinzi (Antelope Horn Decoction) and Huanjing Wan (Eye-Rejuvenating Pill), combined with acupuncture at the blood vessels around the eyebrow bones, to arrest the progression of the disease.
Poem:
Initial dizziness and unilateral headache,
Temporal pulling indicates Green Wind syndrome.
Orbital and nasal pain occurs frequently,
Stuffy and dry, seeing flowers red, black, or white.
Who knows the Liver suffers on the left side first,
The Lung acts as the vanguard for the right eye.
Subsequent involvement affects both eyes generally,
Due to the connection of meridians and Qi flow.
Wind and exhaustion obstruct the Lung and Liver,
Guest heat secretly flows into the Kidney palace.
Constipation may occur naturally,
Frequent heart vexation presses against the chest.
Occasional retching accompanies the condition,
Wind-phlegm accumulates within the Heart center.
Lingyang Tang (Antelope Decoction) must be taken,
Huanjing Wan powder achieves immediate success.
Frequent acupuncture at the eyebrows and other points,
Can treat the root cause and extinguish the pathogenic method.
Avoid needling the Du Meridian; bleeding is preferred,
Lest it lead to subsequent blindness and confusion.
When the pupil opens, the Three Luminaries are lost,
Excellent medicines can cure, but they are rarely met.
Lingyangjiao Yinzi (Antelope Horn Decoction)
Ingredients: Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Black Ginseng (Heishen), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng) (each 2 liang); Asarum (Xixin) (3 liang); Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 1 qian of the powder, add 1 cup of water, decoct until reduced to 0.5 cup. Strain and take warm after meals.
Huanjing Wan (Eye-Rejuvenating Pill)
Ingredients: Leonurus Fruit (Chongweizi), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) (each 2 liang); Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Cassia Seed (Juemingzi), Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi), Ligusticum Rhizome (Xiong), Asarum (Xixin) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills with tea on an empty stomach.
In the early stage of this disease, there is no pain or itching. Vision gradually becomes dim and blurry, resembling that of a person without eye disease (externally normal but functionally impaired). It starts in one eye and then spreads to involve both. The pupil remains upright but does not dilate, neither large nor small. The patient cannot see the Three Luminaries (sunlight, moonlight, lamplight). This is due to disharmony of Zang-Fu Qi, regression of visual clarity, and obstruction of the eye channels. Over three to five years, turbid Qi condenses, forming cataracts or opacities that are greenish-white in color, making it impossible to distinguish people. Subsequently, both eyes are involved, and the pupil becomes minute. Acupuncture is ineffective. Treatment should focus on herbal medicine to tonify the Five Zang organs and reverse the disease process. It is advisable to administer Jueming Wan (Cassia Seed Pill) and Bugan Tang (Liver-Tonifying Decoction), which yield immediate results.
Poem:
No pain, itching, or headache,
Gradual blurriness obscures vision like a veil.
Absence of opacity suggests the disease is hidden,
What more needs to be said about the root of Black Wind?
Visual spots indicate deficiency and exhaustion of Zang-Fu,
Absence of spots implies Liver Qi stagnation and anger.
Once the distinction between deficiency and excess is known,
Tonification and dispersal can be applied clearly.
Upon waking, first take cooling herbal drinks,
On an empty stomach, swallow Magnetite Pill (Cishi Wan).
Tonify the Liver after meals; early treatment is best,
If the pupil recovers, healing will soon follow.
It resembles the condition in the elderly with Yang decline,
Physicians must search carefully and examine closely.
If the Three Luminaries are completely lost, rescue is hopeless,
A dry and fixed pupil presents great difficulty.
