There are two types.
Milk: Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Recorded in *Bie Lu* (Tang Dynasty). Milk from a newborn male infant treats redness and swelling of the eyes with excessive tearing. Also, mix sparrow droppings with milk to remove "Chi Rou" (Pterygium/Red flesh) from the eye. From *Zhou Hou Fang*, it treats heat-induced skin growths and red-white membranes in the eye. Select fine, straight sparrow droppings, mix with human milk, and apply; the membrane will dissolve and disappear completely. Recorded by Chen Cangqi. Grind the eye area with milk and drip into the pupil to see objects beyond clouds. It also treats eye diseases by mixing "Xiang Jing" (Elephant eye/pupil substitute) with milk and dripping into the eye.
Nail clippings from pregnant women: Grind into fine powder and place in the eye to remove cataracts/opacities.
There are fourteen types.
Moschus (Shexiang): Pungent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Treats wind-toxin. Removes episkeritis/opacities from the eye. Leigong states: When using Moschus, open it on Zi days; do not use bitter ones. Grind finely and sieve for use. Pregnant women should not take it.
Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang): Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, slightly toxic. Pregnant women should not take it.
Ursi Adeps (Xiongzhi): Sweet in taste, slightly cold-warm, non-toxic. Ri Huazi states it treats wind and treats vertigo/dizziness.
Butyrum (Su): Sour in taste, slightly cold. Ri Huazi states it benefits the Heart and Lungs. Chen Cangqi states it can be used in various ointment massages for wind-swelling.
Bovis Vesica (Niudan): Bitter in taste, very cold. Benefits the eyeballs. *Yao Xing Lun* records: Take the gallbladder of a female cow in the twelfth lunar month, fill with one hundred black soybeans, wait for one hundred days, then retrieve. Swallow thirty-seven pills after meals at night to calm the Liver and brighten the eyes. Use juice from black soybeans, quantity unspecified.
Hepar Bovis (Niugan): Primarily brightens the eyes.
Gall of Blue Sheep (Qingyangdan): Primarily brightens the eyes. *Yao Xing Lun* records: Consuming Hepar of Blue Sheep brightens the eyes; dripping its gall into the eyes treats red opacities, white membranes, and wind-tearing. *Shi Liao* treats liver-wind deficiency-heat, red and dim painful eyes. For blindness after febrile disease, thinly slice Qingyang Gall or fetal sheep liver, soak in water, and apply for extreme efficacy; swallowing the fetal liver is particularly wonderful. To treat blindness: Take one jin of liver, remove fat membranes, slice thinly. Use a new clay pot that has not touched water, wipe clean, lay the liver inside, and roast over charcoal until all juices/fats are exhausted and it is extremely dry. Take half a sheng of Cassiae Semen (Jue Ming Zi) and one he of Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Liao Zi), stir-fry until fragrant, grind into powder, mix with the roasted liver, and pound into powder. Take one cun-bi (square inch spoonful) mixed with white honey water, taken after meals, three times daily, increase up to three bi, stop after no more than three doses. The eyes will become very clear. Taking it once a year is excellent; one can see text and other objects at night. This sheep is known as "Gu Li Yang". When suffering from eye pain and astringency, inability to see, and difficulty viewing sunlight or lamp light: Take two white pearls (lenses) from cooked sheep eyes, grind them on a fine stone with jujube juice, form into pills the size of small hemp seeds. Place on the eyes while lying supine, twice during the day and twice at night. Not more than three or four treatments are needed for recovery. *Qian Jin Fang* treats red eyes and opacities by drying sheep eyes and grinding into powder to apply to both eyes. Also apply to [specific eye region]. Boil Hepar of Blue Sheep in a copper vessel, cover with a dough cake, drill two holes in the cake the size of human eyes, and steam the eyes upward through the holes. *Zhou Hou Fang* treats dim vision/blindness after febrile disease by applying sheep gall morning and evening. Mei Shi Fang: For dim vision where objects cannot be seen at dusk, slice Qingyang liver and eat with light vinegar; boiling is also good.
Cornu Ovis Ammoni (Yangjiao): Treats congenital blindness (Qing Mang). Brightens eyes, relieves headache due to wind-Qi.
Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Lingyangjiao): Salty and bitter in taste, cold, slightly cold non-toxic. Primarily brightens the eyes.
Cornu Rhinocerotis (Xijiao): Bitter, sour, and salty in taste, cold, non-toxic. Treats headache. Ri Huazi states it calms the Liver and brightens the eyes.
Oculis Tigridis (Hu Jing): Ri Huazi states it calms the Heart.
Hepar Leporis (Tugan): Treats dim vision. Meng Shen states: The liver primarily brightens the eyes; make pills with Cassiae Semen (Jue Ming Zi) for oral administration. It also treats dim vision and blindness caused by upward rushing of fire from taking Dan-Shi (mineral pills); it can be eaten raw. Follow the same method as taking fetal sheep liver. Ri Huazi states: The liver brightens the eyes and treats vertigo and eye pain.
Hepar Suis (Zhugan): Frequently used by physicians. *Wai Tai Mi Yao* records: To treat blindness, take one pig gallbladder, simmer over mild heat, form into pills the size of millet grains. Insert into the eye; leave for a moment for good effect. For heavy opacities: Take the white skin of the pig gallbladder, dry in the sun, combine into small ropes the thickness of a thick hairpin, burn to ash. Once cooled, apply the ash to the opacity. Not more than three to five applications are needed.
Cholera Canis (Quandan): *Sheng Hui Fang* treats itchy, urgent, red, and astringent eyes by injecting dog bile into the eye. *Shi Liao* records: Collect dog gallbladder during Fu days, mix with wine and take orally to brighten the eyes and remove purulent discharge from the eye.
Dens Equi (Machi): Liu Juanzi states: Treats white opacities and polyps in the eye. Take a large handful of horse teeth, wash, mix with a little Natrii Sulfas (Pu Xiao), pound together. Wrap in silk cloth and place on the eye; change frequently.
