This syndrome does not transform from acute convulsion (Jing Feng), but must occur after a severe illness, or following excessive vomiting and diarrhea. It may result from chronic dysentery leading to incontinence; sudden vomiting due to Qi deficiency; chronic cough developing into epilepsy; or aggressive purgation for abdominal masses (Pi Ji). Although the causes of contraction differ, they all fall within the scope of Spleen and Stomach deficiency with Wind pathogen taking advantage of the weakness. The Lung is the child organ of the Spleen; when both mother and child organs are deficient, body fluids fail to circulate properly and transform into phlegm-saliva. Symptoms include a sawing sound in the throat, lethargy with night sweats, protruding eyes and everted lips, irritability with thirst, edema of the four limbs, constipation and urinary retention, cold breath from mouth and nose, occasional spasms (similar to convulsions but less severe), crying due to stomach pain with a crow-like voice. If hair stands erect, eyes become fixed, urination and defecation are involuntary, and the body resembles paralysis, these are all untreatable cases. Treatment should focus on restoring Yang and tonifying Qi, regulating the Spleen and harmonizing the Middle Jiao. If accompanied by convulsive symptoms, use Zaoming Dan (Life-Sustaining Pill); if there are signs of Cold, use Suhe Wan (Styrax Pill).
Main Formula: Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, separately ground).
If Cold is present, add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma); if Cold is severe, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). For cold-induced vomiting, add Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) and Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba); for phlegm-induced vomiting, add Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma); for chronic diarrhea, add Rouguou (Myristicae Semen) and Hezi (Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus); for excessive phlegm, add Dansheng (Arisaematis Cum Bile).
Add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) to the above formula, decoct in water and take orally; or add Quanxie (Scorpion, washed and dried), grind all into fine powder, and take with liquid.
There are two types: Yin syndrome and Yang syndrome. Yin syndrome refers to cold internal organs; at night, Yin Qi is abundant and clashes with Cold. Yang syndrome refers to heat in the internal organs; at night, Yang Qi declines. Both lead to abdominal pain and crying. Initially, allow the mother to suckle the area between the eyebrows (Meixin), then administer the main formula.
Main Formula: Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, each 5 fen), Fushen (Poria cum Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Guigui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gancao (Licorice Root, each 2 fen). Decoct in water and take orally.
For infantile crying within 120 days of birth: Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum, 49 pieces, using only the lower half), grind into fine powder, and take with Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) decoction.
Another prescription: Denghua (Lamp wick carbon, 7 pieces), Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 2 fen), grind into powder, mix with honey, and apply to the inner lip or nipple while the infant sleeps.
Infants have weak Heart Qi and fragile Shen (Spirit). If strangers arrive suddenly, or parents/relatives return from afar, it is advisable not to let the infant see them immediately. They may have passed through temples, Shaomen (Ghost Door) directions, graves, or sickhouses, bringing foul qi, or carrying sweat odor from drinking and horseback riding, which offends the infant. Symptoms include fluctuating facial colors, foaming at the mouth, rapid breathing, abdominal pain, collapse with loss of consciousness, resembling convulsive epilepsy, with a rapid and hurried pulse. There may be a uvula with small blisters on either side; puncture them immediately with a bamboo needle, silver hairpin, or fingernail. Treatment requires herbs that expel evil qi, support righteous qi, and calm the Heart and settle the Shen. Examples include Zaoming Dan (Life-Sustaining Pill), Suhe Wan (Styrax Pill), Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill - can be ingested or burned as incense). Alternatively, burn Chenxiang (Aquilariae Resina), Tanxiang (Santal Albae Lignum), and Sujiang Xiang (Dipterocarpi Resina). Or moxa-burn the Baihui (GV20) and Yintang (EX-HN3) acupoints. If the cause is an adult forcibly taking away an infant's beloved object, causing the Shen to wander and resulting in confusion and locked jaw, first return the object, then administer herbs to calm the Shen and settle the Heart. If the aforementioned medicines are unavailable, use the following decoction. (Baihui GV20 is located at the vertex of the head; Yintang EX-HN3 is located in the center of the glabella.)
Main Formula: Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fushen (Poria cum Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, boiled with Gancao and peeled), Gancao (Licorice Root, equal parts). Decoct in water, and mix in Zhusha (Cinnabaris).
Another prescription: Zaoshentu (Furnace Hearth Earth, 2 liang, ground), Jizi (Galli Ovum Oviparum, one egg), mix with a little water until uniform, and apply to the chest, palms, soles, and top of the head.
