This volume discusses childhood eruptive diseases (Chuangzhen, referring to smallpox and measles). Eruptrive diseases resemble Taiyang disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic factors invading the Taiyang meridian). Symptoms include headache, body heat, cold feet, and a rapid pulse. In cases of diagnostic uncertainty, only Shengma Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) should be administered. This is because Shengma Tang resolves the muscle layer and treats both erupted and non-erupted eruptions; it can be taken in either state. However, purgation must strictly be avoided; this is the greatest taboo. In Taiyang disease with body heat, purgation is inherently contraindicated. For eruptive diseases where fever is on the exterior, purgation is even more contraindicated. Unlearned people in the world claim that at the initial stage, one should use purgatives to promote bowel movements to vent the toxic pathogens; this is erroneous. Others claim that once the pustules have emerged, purgation should not be used, believing that allowing the toxins to exit will stabilize the condition, or suggesting that after pus and blood are abundant, purgation should then be applied; this is also incorrect. Generally speaking, eruptive diseases should never be treated with purgation from beginning to end. If a child has body heat, cold ears, cold buttocks, and cough, and laxatives are indiscriminately used, the toxic qi will sink inward, leading to death. One should only administer Huadu Tang (Toxin Resolving Decoction), Zicao Mutong Tang (Arnebia and Akebia Decoction), or Shi Niu Zi Tang (Burdock Seed Decoction) to promote vigorous eruption. Once the eruption becomes too excessive, Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) should be used to resolve it. If the eruptions emerge slowly, accompanied by restlessness and insomnia, Shuijie San (Water Dissolving Powder), Mahuang Huangqin Tang (Ephedra and Scutellaria Decoction), Shengma Huangqin Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Scutellaria Decoction), or Huoxue San (Blood Activating Powder) should be used as the primary treatment. For black eruptions that have inverted and failed to suppurate (Dao Ye), Zhuwei Gao (Pig Tail Ointment), Wubi San (Incomparable Powder), or Longnao Gaozi (Borneol Pills) are invariably effective. If heat-toxins attack the throat causing pain, Rusheng Tang (Like-Sage Decoction) is indicated. If the eruptions affect the eyes, Jueming San (Cassia Seed Powder), Boyun San (Cloud-Pushing Powder), Mimenghua San (Lycium Flower Powder), Tongsheng San (Universal Salvation Powder), or Ha Fen San (Clam Shell Powder) are indicated. These constitute the complete methods for treating eruptive diseases.
(Shengma Tang) Treats headache due to Taiyang disease or Wind-Cold, aversion to cold with high fever, limb pain, fever with chills, dry nose and inability to sleep. It also treats childhood and adult eruptive diseases, suitable for both pre-eruption and post-eruption stages. It additionally treats irregular climate changes causing epidemics, sudden temperature fluctuations leading to improper dressing, and sudden shifts from extreme heat to cold, resulting in body pain and heavy head feeling like a stone. (The four ingredients of this formula are found in Miscellaneous Formulas, Volume 16.)
(Xijiao Dihuang Tang) Treats Taiyang disease and Warm Diseases where sweating was indicated but not performed, resulting in intra-abdominal blood stasis. It also treats incomplete epistaxis or hematemesis with residual intra-abdominal blood stasis, presenting with sallow complexion and black stools. This formula primarily resolves blood stasis and also treats eruptive diseases; if eruptions emerge excessively, this formula is used to resolve them. (The four ingredients of this formula are found in Miscellaneous Formulas, Volume 18.)
(Mahuang Huangqin Tang) Treats pediatric epidemic heat qi, slow emergence of pox-like eruptions, increased restlessness and confusion, or persistent body pain and heat after eruption. (The five ingredients of this formula are found in Pediatric Formulas, Volume 20.)
(Shengma Huangqin Tang) Treats pediatric epidemic eruptions emerging slowly, with restlessness and insomnia. Add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 1.5 qian. (The five ingredients of this formula are found in Pediatric Formulas, Volume 20.)
(Huadu Tang) Treats pediatric eruptions, suitable for consumption whether before or after eruption.
Zicao (Arnebiae Radix, tender parts) 30g, Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 30g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) 30g.
Crush into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Boil with two cups of water and 50 grains of glutinous rice until reduced to one cup. Strain and take warm.
(Zicao Mutong Tang) Treats pediatric eruptive diseases.
Zicao (Arnebiae Radix, remove rhizome) 30g, Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) 30g, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 30g, Fuling (Poria) 30g, Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa) 30g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 15g.
Crush into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Take 4 qian bi per dose. Boil with 1.5 cups of water until reduced to one cup. Strain and take warm.
(Shi Niu Zi Tang) Treats eruptions attempting to penetrate the skin but failing, with heat qi attacking the throat, red eyes, and heart vexation.
Shi Niu Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried until fragrant) 120g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried) 30g, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 15g, Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) 60g.
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with boiling water. Take after meals and before bed, three times daily. Highly beneficial for soothing the throat and pharynx, resolving phlegm, and stopping cough. Regular use in spring and winter prevents boils and sores; suitable for all ages.
(Shuijie San) Treats epidemic headache and high fever for one to two days. Also treats irritability before eruption, or persistent body heat after eruption.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 60g, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 60g, Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) 60g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried) 60g, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 60g, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 120g, stems removed, soaked in decoction, dried, and weighed).
Grind into fine powder. After the patient bathes in lukewarm water, mix 2 qian with warm water and ingest. Follow with a second dose. Recovery occurs with sweating and loose stools. Robust individuals may take two fang cun bi. This formula regulates wind-excess constitutions and is suitable for the dog days of summer. Removing Dahuang makes it suitable for spring and summer.
(Huoxue San) Treats eruptions emerging slowly.
Take 1 qian of Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) powder, mixed with wine. To relieve pain, mix with warm cooked water.
(Zhuwei Gao) Treats inverted eruptions (Dao Yan).
Prick the tip of a piglet's tail to obtain one or two drops of blood. Mix with a small amount of Sheng Naozi (Borneolum Syntheticum). Grind together and take with fresh water. Immediate effect.
(Wubi San) Treats severe manifestations of eruptive diseases with slow emergence, black eruptions, and all other severe conditions.
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) 1 fen, Shexiang (Moschus) 1 fen, Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) 1 fen, Nifen (Calomelas) 1 fen (all finely ground), Zhusha (Cinnabaris) 30g (ground to powder first).
Grind into extremely fine powder. For patients: infants take 1 zi, adults take 0.5 qian. Mix with a small amount of Yinchen (Hydrargyrum) and three drops of blood from a piglet's tail. Mix with a little fresh well water and take orally. The patient will first fall asleep peacefully. Subsequently, foul-smelling phlegm and waste resembling rotting fish intestines or grape clusters will be expelled, bringing relief. Using breast milk for infants is especially effective.
(Longnao Gaozi) Treats epidemic diseases manifesting as pox, red eruptions failing to penetrate, heart vexation, mania, panting, delirium, hallucinations, or eruptions that have emerged but sunk inward. Rapid treatment is required; otherwise, toxin entering the zang organs leads to death.
Sheng Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) 3g.
Grind finely. Mix with pig heart blood drop by drop to form pills the size of a cocklebur seed. Take one pill per dose. For heart vexation and mania, dissolve in Zicao Tang (Arnebia Decoction). For sunken eruptions, dissolve in warm wine. Mental calmness and sleep will follow shortly, and eruptions will fully surface. Rest according to standard protocols thereafter.
(Rusheng Tang) Treats pediatric eruptive diseases where toxin attacks the throat causing swelling and pain.
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) 30g, Niubang Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried) 30g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw) 30g, Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, core removed) 15g.
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with boiling water and sipped slowly. Adding Zhuye (Phyllostachys nigra leaves) for decoction is especially good.
