[Hai Ge San] Treats women suffering from cold damage (Shanghan) with blood stasis knotting in the chest and diaphragm. Rubbing the area causes severe pain, making it intolerable for others to approach or touch. (For the syndrome of blood stasis in the chest in women, the standard treatment is to puncture the Qimen [Liv 14] acupoint. Zhang Zhongjing's works do not record a herbal prescription for this condition. This formula is suspected not to be authored by Zhang Zhongjing, but its rationale is sound; therefore, it is retained here.)
Ingredients: Hai Ge (Clam Shell), Huashi (Talcum), Gancao (Licorice Root, each 1 liang, honey-fried), Mangxiao (Mirabilite, 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Pound and sieve the ingredients into a powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with egg white. Once the Small Intestine functions smoothly, the blood stasis in the chest and diaphragm will dissipate. If blood accumulates at the Shanzhong [CV 17], it causes obstruction in the Small Intestine; once the Small Intestine is obstructed, blood circulation at the Shanzhong cannot flow freely. This formula is suitable. If urination is clear and abundant, indicating blood has moved downwards, Guizhi Honghua Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Safflower Decoction) should be used to induce sweating for a cure.
This volume discusses pediatric cold damage. The treatment principles for children are generally similar to those for adults, but with smaller dosages and cooler-natured herbs. For common wind-phlegm obstruction causing fever, runny nose, phlegmy cough, restlessness, and thirst, Xingxing San (Stirring Up Powder) is indicated. For throat discomfort and phlegm-solid cough, Niuzi Tang (Burdock Seed Decoction) is indicated. For warmth in the head/forehead and body, yellow-red stool, and internal heat, Sishun San (Four-Compliance Powder), Lianqiao Yin (Forsythia Drink), and Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) are indicated. For warmth in the head/forehead and body with white, sour-smelling stool, indicating food stagnation in the Stomach, Shuang Wan (Double Pill) is indicated. For children without other diseases who suffer from overeating and lack of self-control, leading to abdominal distension, fever, and headache, Shuang Wan treats all these conditions. For children with tidal fever, fine pain in the head and eyes, mental restlessness, red urine, and constipation, indicating severe heat, Xixin San (Wash Heart Powder) combined with Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Stomach-Harmonizing Purging Decoction) is indicated. For headache, fever, preference for leaning on others, and aversion to cold, indicating a cold damage syndrome, Shengma Tang (Aucklandia Decoction) is indicated. For cases with no sweat, Mahuang Huangqin Tang (Ephedra and Scutellaria Decoction) is used; for cases with sweat, Shengma Huangqin Tang (Aucklandia and Scutellaria Decoction) is used. These are essential formulas. Children should not be given excessive cooling medicines, as this can cause Cold in the Stomach and moving parasites, presenting symptoms similar to convulsions. If physicians fail to distinguish this and administer convulsion medicines containing substances like Nao (Camphor/Borneol) or She (Musk), vomiting may result. Many cases of slow convulsions arise from Stomach deficiency. Only when there is evidence of Heat in children should purgative methods be used, and pills should be used cautiously. Instead, decoctions made from Dahuang (Rhubarb) and Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) should be used to purge accumulated heat, as pills containing Badou (Croton Seed) are primarily for attacking food stagnation.
[Xixin San] Treats generalized high fever, fine pain in the head and eyes, stiffness in the back and shoulders, surging heat upwards, bitter taste in the mouth, dry/cracked lips, dry tongue during sleep, sore/swollen throat, thick/sticky sputum, phlegm obstruction, loss of appetite, mental restlessness, dry/aching eyes, nasal congestion from cold damage, heaviness in the four limbs, inability to speak, pain in all joints, difficulty in urination and defecation, measles-like eruptions, epidemic warm pathogens, delirium with excessive thirst, and pediatric Tian Diao Feng (convulsive disorder) and night terrors.
