Yun (Vital Qi/Movement) refers to motion, specifically the continuous circulation and cyclical return. Within the process of ascending and descending, inside the Great Void (Tai Xu, cosmic space), the upper and lower mutually attract; this is the moment when Qi arrives and rotates. Since the beginning of creation when Heaven and Earth were opened, within the two Qi of ascending and descending, there exists a rotating and returning Qi, all of which inherit the attributes of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water); therefore, it is called "Five Yun" (Five Movements). Specifically: Earth Yun corresponds to the Heavenly Stems Jia and Ji; Metal Yun corresponds to Yi and Geng; Wood Yun corresponds to Ding and Ren; Fire Yun corresponds to Wu and Gui; Water Yun corresponds to Bing and Xin. Within these ten Heavenly Stems, the Five Qi circulate continuously, collectively named "Yun Qi" (Movement and Qi). In the second Jiazi cycle, combined with the relationships of Si Tian (Heavenly Supervisor, governing the first half of the year's climate) and Zai Quan (Earthly Spring, governing the second half), it is thus called "Three Yuan" (Three Cycles). When the Three Yuan combine, movement begins; consequently, the Three Realms (San Cai: Heaven, Earth, Humanity), Four Seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), Six Qi (Wind, Cold, Heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire), and the generation of all transformations are entirely determined by this. Therefore, sometimes following Heaven's decree without transformation occurs; sometimes suppressing Earth's transformation so that growth does not occur; sometimes being suppressed by Heaven so that Yun does not respond; sometimes being supported by Earth so that Qi is not dedicated; sometimes excess leads to self-restraint; sometimes deficiency leads to being punished by others; sometimes self-damage returns to the balanced position. Thus, Heaven's decree responds to transformation, Earth generates formation, the Four Seasons change correctly, and the withering and flourishing of all things are all determined by this. Therefore, auspicious omens and inauspicious signs can be seen in advance; peace and prosperity or disaster and chaos can also be predicted beforehand; crop failure or abundance is also determined by this; people's diseases and disasters can also be verified. Hence, the arrival has specific days, observation has specific times, viewing has specific methods, and one must also divine from directions. The method lies in examining the hours; it cannot be perceived casually. One must carefully examine the number of days, as there are inherent additions, subtractions, generations, and progressions. One must also maintain purity and fasting before observing, and must not show it to non-persons (those unqualified or impure). The method starts from the 1st day of the 1st month in the Jiazi year of the Linde era of the Great Tang (664 AD), on the day of Siyou New Moon (first day of the lunar month), Lou Star belonging to Metal Dog. First, calculate accumulated years, then subtract once seven, using this as the base. Then divide by nineteen, named Leap Number Times, multiply by twelve. After multiplication, add the Leap Number again, then add the current month's number of times, listing them separately below. Then remove half. Next, remove the Leap Number, and vacate the Five Numbers. Then advance the upper position by one place, and multiply by three. Next, derive the name number of the lower position, removing the influence of small months (30 days). Then add the Month Command, see how many days remain, divide by sixty. If not fully divisible, multiply by one hundred, then subtract eighty-seven. If still not fully divisible, add the Yun Number: for Excess, add the Completion Number; for Deficiency, add the Generation Number. See the result. If it is a Yang year encountering an even number, add one; if a Yin year encountering an odd number, subtract one. This number represents the count within the ke (quarter-hour) of that day.
Regarding the twenty-four methods of Excess Yun:
Various Yun arrivals have dates, and Qi arrival has moments. Therefore, Excess Yun arrives thirteen days early, Deficiency Yun arrives thirteen days late, Balanced Yun coincides with Si Tian, Heaven Punishment Yun is five days after Si Tian, and Earth Punishment Yun is six days after Si Tian. These numbers have their own moments and follow the divination laws.
1. Jia Zi Year: Jia is Earth Yun Excess. Zi is a Yang year. Add six to the ke number. Why? Zi belongs to Kan, its number is 1. Earth Yun has no completion number, so use the generation number 5. 1 plus 5 equals 6. Thus, add 6 ke to the moment. At the time of Yun transition, face Yin direction and observe. First, green Qi appears. After it disappears, yellow Qi flows horizontally from Jia to Zi, where it ends. The Qi color is deep and clear, with no intermediate colors between, indicating the prosperity of Upper Qi (Heavenly/Earth Qi).
2. Jia Wu Year: Jia is Earth Yun Excess. Wu is a Yang year. Add fourteen to the ke number. Why? Wu belongs to Li, its number is 9. Earth number is 5. 9 plus 5 equals 14. Thus, add 14 ke. At the time of Yun transition, face Yin direction and observe. First, green-yellow Qi appears. After it disappears, yellow Qi flows horizontally from Jia to Wu, where it ends. The Qi color is deep, movement is swift, arriving on time without other colors, which is auspicious, indicating the prosperity of Earth Qi.
