Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 3 liang, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 2 liang, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 2 liang, Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) 12 pieces, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) half sheng (washed), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 liang.
The above six herbs are decocted in one dou of water to obtain three sheng. The dregs are removed, and one sheng is taken warm per dose.
When Taiyang (Taiyang disease) and Shaoyang (Shaoyang disease) combine, treating only the Yangming (Yangming disease) channel occurs because pathogenic heat has entered the interior and rebelled; it should be transformed from the pivot mechanism out to Yangming. Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) are used to harmonize the Yang qi of the Taiyin (Spleen).
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix)
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 2 liang, Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) 2 liang, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 2 liang (bark removed), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 1 liang, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) half sheng (washed), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) 12 pieces (split open).
The above six herbs are decocted in seven sheng of water to obtain two sheng. The dregs are removed, and the decoction is divided into two warm doses.
Huangqin Renshen Tang (Scutellaria and Ginseng Decoction) appears in *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders) with a formula but without symptoms. This condition represents the transition from Taiyang (Taiyang disease) just entering Shaoyang (Shaoyang disease); thus, it imitates the harmonizing method of Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), using Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus)
to guard the middle jiao.
Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 3 liang, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 3 liang, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 3 liang, Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) 3 liang.
The above four herbs are decocted in six sheng of water to obtain two sheng. The dregs are removed, and the decoction is divided into two warm doses.
In Jueyin (Jueyin disease) cold-rebellion causing vomiting and rebellion, Yin cold rebels internally and repels Yang externally, resulting in vomiting. Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), being greatly bitter, drain the Yang heat, while Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) serves as
the guiding agent for transformation.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 3 liang, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 2 liang (bark removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 3 liang (honey-fried), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 3 liang, Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) 2 liang, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) half sheng, Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) 12 pieces.
The above seven herbs are decocted in one dou of water to obtain six sheng. The dregs are removed, and one sheng is taken warm per dose, three times during the day and twice at night.
Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction) is a harmonizing formula. It is a modification of Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction), substituting Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) for Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) for Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) for Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). It addresses heat in the chest that desires
to specifically harmonize
from the upper jiao.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 4 liang, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 1 liang, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 1 liang, Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) 3 liang, JiZihuang (Ovi Galli Albumen) 2 pieces.
The above five herbs are decocted in five sheng of water. First, decoct the first three herbs to obtain two sheng, remove the dregs, add Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) and melt it completely, cool slightly, then add JiZihuang (Ovi Galli Albumen) and stir
until uniform.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) purge Heart fire; Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) and JiZihuang (Ovi Galli Albumen) nourish Yin. Naming the decoction after each herb signifies that these pairs must be used synergistically. In Shaoyin (Shaoyin disease)
with restlessness,
Shaoyin (Shaoyin disease)
pulse is deep.
