Xue Lizhai treated a woman whose breasts swelled due to anger, accompanied by headache, aversion to cold, and fever. This is a syndrome of Qi stagnation in the Liver meridian. Two doses of Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Decoction for Rescuing from Toxicity) were administered, and the exterior symptoms subsided. Subsequently, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was modified with Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike), and Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng). After four doses, she recovered.
Another woman suffered left breast pain and chest diaphragm discomfort after anger, attributed to Liver-Spleen Qi stagnation. Fangmai Liqi Yin (Fangmai Flowing-Qi Decoction) was used with added Xiangmu (Costus Root) and Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium Viridis). She stabilized after four doses.
A third woman had long-term depression, resulting in a knot in the left breast the size of an apricot kernel that did not resolve for three months. Her Heart pulse was choppy, and her Spleen pulse was large but empty upon pressure, indicating Liver-Spleen Qi and Blood deficiency. Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) was modified with Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Qingpi, and Jiegeng. After more than fifty doses, the knot dissipated.
Yet another woman had a breast knot for over a year, with afternoon fever and poor appetite, indicating Qi and Blood insufficiency. Yiqi Yangrong Tang (Qi-Nourishing and Blood-Enriching Decoction) was intended, but she instead took Qi-moving agents. The abscess ruptured, discharging clear pus, leading to her death. Another woman had a breast knot the size of a chestnut; taking similar Qi-moving drugs caused the mass to enlarge like an inverted bowl, becoming hard as stone, discharging bloody fluid, and resulting in death. Guoshi’s relative, a released palace maid, had a chestnut-sized breast knot. Rejecting the nourishing decoction, she took Chuangke Liqi Yin (Surgical Flowing-Qi Decoction) and Baidu San. Three years later, the mass grew large and hard, discharging water without ulcerating, and she died. Generally, depression obstructs Spleen Qi and causes Liver Qi to rebel, forming hidden knots that are painless and itchless, often ignored, making them difficult to treat. Upon such symptoms, one should regulate emotions, avoid rich foods, resolve stagnation, and use Qi-Blood tonics to preserve life; otherwise, it is incurable. Some may take one or two years, or even five to six years, to ulcerate and sink. These are called Ru Yan (Breast Rock/Cancer) because their shape resembles rocky caves. They are highly toxic; caution is advised, with only one or two in ten surviving.
A woman with breast swelling but no suppuration was treated with Yiqi Yangrong Tang plus Xiangfu and Qingpi. Pus formed after several doses. Needling drained the pus, and she healed in ten days.
Another woman had right breast swelling, fever, lethargy, weakness, and severe night fever. Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Warmer-Boosting Qi-Rescuing Decoction) combined with Xiaoyao San (Free Wanderer Powder) cured her.
A man with painful, hard left breast swelling was treated with Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula for Preserving Life). Pain ceased after two doses. Shixuan San (Ten-Auspicious Powder) with Qingpi resolved the condition after four doses, followed by needling.
If pus has formed but not ruptured, and a thin skin peels at the sore head, use Daizhen agents (Needle-replacing agents) to puncture the skin, cover with plaster, and allow natural drainage. Timely needling prevents extensive ulceration. If drainage is poor, add drugs that search for pus and transform toxins. Using Shengji agents (Flesh-generating agents) before pus and blood are fully discharged aids pathogenic factors and causes recurrence even if the wound closes early. Caution is essential.
A man over fifty, worried about his son, had left breast and hypochondriac swelling with a wiry, rapid, and choppy Liver pulse. Longhui Wan (Dragon Gallbladder Pill) reduced symptoms. Xiaochaihu Tang combined with Siwu Tang (Four-Material Decoction) with Qingpi, Beimu, and Yuanzhi produced pus. He refused nourishing and resolving-stagnation treatment, taking mixed Liqi and Baidu agents instead, causing constipation, fever, and thirst. I declined treatment, predicting death due to Yang deficiency preventing pus eruption and Yin-Blood exhaustion causing dryness. He indeed died.
A man with angry-induced left breast swelling and wiry-rapid Liver pulse improved with Fuyuan Tongqi San (Restoring Original Unblocking-Qi Powder) in two doses. Xiaochaihu Tang with Qingpi, Chuanxiong, and Danggui resolved it in several doses. Fuyuan Tongqi San consists of Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus), Qingpi, Shanjiapian (Pangolin Squama), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), Loulu (Cynanchi Atrati Radix), and Beimu, equal parts. Take 3 qian, mixed with warm wine.
Sun Wen yuan’s niece-in-law had phlegm-dampness, chest fullness, and recent breast swelling with chills and fever, impending carbuncle. Jiawei Shenxiao Gualou San (Modified Divine Efficacy Trichosanthes Powder) resolved chills/fever but not swelling. Beimu and Baizhi served as Deputy herbs, Gualou (Trichosanthis Radix) as Chief, Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Danggui, and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) as Assistant, Qingpi, Gancao, and Chaihu as Envoy. Pain decreased slightly, but swelling persisted. Pulse indicated pus formation. Neituo Shixuan San (Internal Support Ten-Auspicious Powder) with Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) and Didingcao (Violaris Herba) drained pus in two doses. Due to foot sores and edema, Didingcao and Yinhua were removed, adding Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) and Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus) for recovery.
Xue Lizhai treated Wang Rudao’s wife, over thirty, who had post-anger breast pain/swelling due to Liver Fire. Xiaochaihu Tang combined with Siwu Tang plus Qingpi, Jiegeng, Xiangfu, and Zhike cured her. Self-medicating with Liqi Yin caused morning chills/evening fevers and worsened swelling due to Qi-Blood damage. Bazhen Tang for over thirty doses cured her, aided by her youth and easy Qi recovery.
A woman had a chicken-egg-sized breast lump painful on exertion, unresponsive to internal support drugs, diagnosed as Ru Lao (Breast Labor/Chronic Breast Abscess) due to Liver Blood deficiency. Shenxiao Gualou San for four doses, followed by Garlic-separated moxibustion, reduced swelling. Bazhen Tang with increased Xiangfu, Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica), and Didingcao, alternating with the previous powder, resolved it in a month. Ru Ju (Breast Carbuncle) presents with hard, numb swelling that does not resolve even after rupture. Urgent use of this powder and garlic-separated moxibustion is required. Caused by Seven Emotions damaging Qi-Blood, it is also a Labor syndrome. Regulate emotions, diet, and rest; otherwise, incurable.
A woman with Ru Yong (Breast Abscess) and strong Qi-Blood had non-healing wounds. Shenxiao Gualou San helped. Fermented Soybean cake moxibustion completed the cure. Another woman with unruptured symptoms healed in three doses with the same formula. Chen Liangfu stated: Regular use of this drug for women’s Ru Lao prevents root causes. It transforms existing pus into fluid or disperses unformed toxin via urine/stool.
A man recovering from illness developed a left breast abscess, followed by rock-hard chest nodules persisting for half a year. Pain radiated to the shoulder. Dream oracle suggested using Ginger Juice processed Xiangfu. Verified against Materia Medica and Dr. Zhang Lu, it was effective. Xiangfu soaked overnight in ginger juice, powdered, taken 2 qian with rice drink. Pus flowed, swelling subsided, and he healed. (Cha’an Xiao Cheng)
Zhu Danxi treated a sixty-year-old woman, fond of rich food, Qi-stagnated, robust, jealous, sweating-less in summer, and irritable. A chess-piece-sized, painless left breast knot appeared, with poor spirit and taste perception. After half a month, Ren Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) adjusted with Qingpi and Gancao powder, plus ginger juice, sipped frequently, resolved it in five to seven days. This was early Ru Yan. Untreated, it hides for 5-10 years, becoming painless/itchless, ulcerating below the breast like a cave. Or, after 5-10 years with normal diet, internal organs become visible before death. Common in women estranged from husbands, as husband is heaven; losing him generates this. Named "Rock" for its hollow, cave-like appearance. Prolonged course. Early treatment prevented death in this case; others died. Treated a newlywed woman with just Qingpi and Gancao, who recovered.
A lady had breast swelling before menstruation, dry mouth/thirstlessness, reduced appetite, wiry-rapid left pulse, flat right pulse. Siwu Tang with Chenpi, Baizhu, and Fuling, taken hot with Dian Wan (Point Pill), 30 pills.
Another lady had pre-existing painless breast knots, suddenly developing a painful side lump. Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chuanxiong, Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Chenpi each 4 qian, Renshen 2 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 1 qian, Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium) 3 qian, Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice) and Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice) 1 qian each, Danggui Tou (Angelica Head) 1 qian. Two doses.
Huang Lady had painful breast swelling. Qingpi, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Lianqiao, Jiaoci (Gleditsiae Spina), Huangyaozi (Dioscorea bulbifera), Danggui Tou, Mutong each 1 qian, Sheng Gancao 0.3 qian, with good wine, decocted and drunk. External wash applied.
Li Dongyuan treated a woman with black-headed sores on breasts, sunken centers. Wiry-huge pulse, fine upon pressure. Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Lianqiao, Gegen (Puerariae Radix) each 1.5 qian, Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 0.3 qian, Huangqin, Dangshen (Angelica Body), Zhi Gancao each 1 qian, Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus) 0.5 qian, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) 2 qian. Decocted to one cup, two doses cured.
Xue Lizhai treated a woman with Ru Yong, chills, fever, headache. Jingfang Baidu San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Decoction for Rescuing from Toxicity) one dose. Fresh Pugongying (Taraxaci Herba) pounded with wine, drunk hot, residue applied hot externally. Cured. Danxi noted: Pugongying clears heat-toxin, reduces swelling/nodules, moves stagnant Qi, resolves mineral poison.
Chen Liangfu recalled: During Kaiqing era, Gongren of Gan Chuan aged fifty died of breast abscess. In Guihai year, Madam Zhao of Wuyang aged seventy-one had a goose-egg-sized lump on left breast appearing every 1-2 years, suddenly painful. I advised: Sun Simiao said women over fifty should not get breast abscesses; if they do, they are incurable. Fortunately unruptured, likely Qi tumor. Prescribed Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction) minus Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). Reduced slightly. Repeat during future swellings to reduce.
Xue Lizhai stated: A woman with year-long unresolving breast knot, dry mouth, fatigue, choppy pulse, poor appetite, indicates Liver-Spleen Qi-Blood deficiency. Nourishment is primary. Using herbal teas failed, leading to death.
Miao Zhongchun treated Gu Wenxue’s concubine with left Ru Yan. Xiakucao and Pugongying as Chief; Yinhua and Loulu as Deputy; Beimu, Sangye (Mori Folium), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos), Xiongshufen (Male Rat Feces), Lianqiao, Baizhi, Zihua Didingcao (Violaris Herba), Shanzicou (Colchici Cormus), Zhi Cao (Licorice), Gualou, Qian Gen (Rubiae Radix), Chenpi, Rushan (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha) as Assistants/Envoy. Xiakucao decoction pills taken in large amounts dissolved the mass. Recurrence on right breast three years later resolved with remaining medicine. Effective for others. (Guang Biji)
Ma Mingju treated Mrs. Shen with chronic ulcerated breast abscess, covered only by a membrane. Shufen Tu (Mouse Dung Earth), Lian Shu Zi (Melia Toosendan Fructus - frost-exposed preferred, not Chuanlian), and Lubifengfang (Vespa Nidus) each 3 qian, calcined, powdered, mixed. 3 qian with wine, every two days. Pain stopped, pus cleared, wound closed in days. From Jiangxi sugar merchant treating throat disease. (Guang Biji)
Zhang Wangwu recorded verified formula for Ruping (Breast Lump): Baizhi 1 qian, Xiongshufen 1 qian. Dry, powder, mix with good wine. Sleep off to heal. (Sharp-pointed rat dung is best.) Another miracle formula: Live crucian carp and yam (same length as fish) pounded to juice, applied to breast, covered with paper. Immediate cure. (Guang Biji)
Xue treated a woman with post-Ru Yong fever unresponsive to Qi-Blood tonics. Bazhen Tang with Paojiang (Prepared Ginger) stopped fever in four doses. Continued with Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Xiangfu for thirty doses restored balance.
Xue Lizhai treated a woman under twenty, weak constitution, breast pain, headache, floating pulse. Renshen Baidu San with extra Renshen resolved exterior symptoms in one dose. Poor appetite, afternoon low-grade fever continued. Xiaochaihu Tang combined with Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) for two doses resolved fever/appetite. Internal support with Chaihu for ten doses drained pus and cured. Another woman feared needling despite pus formation, worsening condition. Forced needling drained three bowls of pus, rapid pulse/thirst. Large tonics for thirty doses cured. Danxi noted: Breasts belong to Yangming, nipples to Jueyin (Liver). Liver is vital for women, source of sinews, with sacs. Initial swelling affects few sacs; unneedled pus ruptures all sacs. Robust survive, weak die. Needling is essential.
Qian Guobin treated a fifty-six-year-old woman with seven-year left breast abscess, half ulcerated, peach-sized hole bleeding fluid. Plasters increased pain; cloth ring protected from friction. Nipple belongs to Foot Jueyin Liver, breast to Foot Yangming Stomach. External single herb insufficient; strong internal tonics necessary. Based on form/color/taste: Chen Xiangyuan (Citron) pulp resembles breast lobes, color green-yellow (Green=Liver, Yellow=Stomach), taste sour-sweet (Sour=Liver, Sweet=Stomach), fragrant to move Liver-Stomach Qi, black stops bleeding, wine harmonizes meridians. One citron powdered, taken twice. Also: Wine-fried Huangqi 2 liang boosts Qi/Wei; Earth-fried Baizhu 2 liang, Yam 5 liang strengthens Spleen/dries dampness; Chuanxiong, Danggui, Dihuang, Baishao 1 qian each nourish Blood. Six bowls water, boil to three, four doses. Recovered in one month. (Detailed analysis exemplifies Gewu method.)
Wang Hongxu stated: Early Ru Yan appears as painless, itchless, skin-colored lump in/breast, resembling Luoli (Scrofula) or Enhe (Malignant Knot). Caused by Yin-Cold phlegm condensation from grief/worry/hardship/fear. Start with Xihuang Wan (Rhino Horn Pill), 3 qian with wine, ten doses cure. Or Yanghe Tang (Yang-Warming Decoction) with Tubei Mu 5 qian, resolves in days. Plasters cause daily swelling and tearing pain, hard to treat. Skin color change makes it harder. Alternate Yanghe Tang and Xihuang Wan.
