Dr. Xue Lizhai treated a postpartum woman who suddenly saw ghosts and gods. After using Tiaojing San (Regulate Menses Powder), her condition worsened, with phlegm-saliva surging upward and experiencing chills in the morning and fever in the evening. Therefore, he prescribed Bazhen San (Eight-Treasure Powder) in the morning and Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Spleen-Restoring Decoction) in the evening. She recovered after taking each prescription for more than fifty doses.
Sheng Yongjing treated the wife of Jin Tang, who suffered from spontaneous abortion (half-birth) and had been ill for several months. She experienced fainting several times a day, feeling as if ghosts were exiting through the top of her head and entering through her mouth. Someone said: "The pulse is choppy and wiry, indicating blood deficiency with phlegm. The ghost exiting from the crown indicates the departure of the Yuan Shen (Original Spirit). If it does not return, death ensues; if it returns, survival is possible." Medication was administered, expelling about a bowl of phlegm, and she soon recovered. (From *Wujiang County Annals*. Yongjing is the grandson of Qidong.)
Note: Spontaneous abortion also often results in dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, and should be treated similarly to normal childbirth.
Chen Liangfu treated the son-in-law of Hong Yunshi Tianxi of Wuyang, who, after childbirth, spoke incoherently and incessantly, appearing possessed by spirits. Various medicines proved ineffective. Upon examination, his six pulses were harmonious and peaceful. He recovered after two doses of Duoming San (Life-Rescuing Powder).
Shen Yaofeng stated: Postpartum mania and delirium without lochia discharge indicates Blood Stasis, suitable for Wuji Wan (Limitless Pill). If lochia continues to flow, it indicates Phlegm Confusion, suitable for Liushen Tang (Six-Spirit Decoction): Banxia Qu (Prepared Pinellia Fermented), Juhong (Tangerine Peel), Danning (Fried Pinellia with Calculus Bovis), Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome), Fushen (Poria with Pine Root), and Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower), each one qian, decocted in water and taken orally. A tailor's wife, more than half a month postpartum, became manic, beating and scolding incessantly. Her husband locked her on a millstone. I prescribed Wuji Wan, six qian, divided into two doses taken with wine. She recovered immediately after finishing the dose. Four or five days later, it recurred; another six doses were given, and it did not recur again. Another surnamed Ding woman, postpartum, suffered from unconsciousness and delirium resembling mania, with lochia still flowing but not excessive in amount. Physicians debated whether to purge or tonify. Senior Scholar Jin Shangtao arrived later, examined the patient, and said: "Let me use a mild medicine, and we shall see." He then prescribed Liushen Tang. After one dose, her spirit cleared; after four doses, she recovered completely. In the spring of the Ji Xu year, Lady Qian Xiangmei, postpartum, had slight fever and chest stuffiness, with occasional delirium and continuous lochia. Blood-regulating medicines were ineffective. Switching to Liushen Tang for four doses resulted in complete recovery.
Postpartum uncontrollable laughter: An old woman claimed this was caused by a servant dislocating the waist during postpartum care. Using two meat portions of Wumei (Mume Fruit), decocted in water and taken orally, yielded immediate effect. This was witnessed by Qian Linzai of Jiaxing.
