Ge's Formula for Treating Gu Poison with Lower Bleeding.
Antelope horn skin (Saiga Tatarica Cornu), three cun in length; decayed drum skin is also acceptable. Lotus leaf (Nelumbinis Nelumbo Leaf), Sophora flavescens root (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Coptis rhizome (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Angelica sinensis root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), each two liang. Add seven sheng of water, boil to obtain two sheng, and divide into three doses. Another version adds rhinoceros horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu) and Cimicifuga rhizome (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), each three liang. If lotus root (Nelumbinis Rhizoma) is unavailable, use madder root (Rubiae Cordifoliae Radix), four liang, which is better.
For those who raise Gu worms to harm patients, the diagnostic method is as follows:
Patients suffering from Gu poisoning experience severe abdominal pain, as if being bitten by something, or may vomit blood or have bloody stools. If not treated immediately, the Gu will consume the five zang organs, leading to death. To determine if it is Gu poison, ask the patient to spit saliva into water. If the saliva sinks, it is Gu; if it floats, it is not. This view is consistent between "Duan Ju" and Yao's teachings.
To identify the name of the Gu master, use the following formula:
Take a small amount of drum skin, burn it to ash, and have the patient ingest it. The patient will soon spontaneously call out the name of the Gu master. Informing the master will lead to recovery. Alternatively, snakes may transform into Gu poison and contaminate food, causing mass disease (Jia Bing - accumulation masses). This condition takes years to become fatal and has specific treatments. Additionally, placing lotus leaves tightly under the patient's sleeping mat will cause the patient to spontaneously call out the Gu master's name.
Formula for treating vomiting or lower bleeding due to Gu poisoning, resembling rotten liver:
Madder root (Rubiae Cordifoliae Radix) and lotus root (Nelumbinis Rhizoma), each three liang. Cut into pieces, add four sheng of water, boil to obtain two sheng, and strain. Drink while warm in one dose for immediate cure. The patient will also spontaneously call out the Gu master's name. Madder root is used for dyeing crimson red. This matches "Duan Ju" and Yao's formula.
Another formula: One seed of Croton tiglium (Crotonis Fructus), remove heart and skin, roast. Three grains of fermented soybeans (Soybeanis Preparata), and one fang cun bi (square inch scoop) of soot from the bottom of the cauldron. Pound together to make three pills. Take one pill to expel the toxin; if ineffective, take another pill to expel it.
Another formula: One sheng of salt, mixed with pure vinegar (Acetum). Take once to induce immediate vomiting and cure. "Duan Ju" agrees. Zhi's formula: Boil one sheng of vinegar until dissolved, then take to cure.
Another formula: Take fourteen earthworms (Pheretima), soak in three sheng of vinegar until they die. Consume only the juice. Even dead earthworms can be revived by this method.
Another formula: One bitter bottle gourd (Lagenariae Sicerariae Fructus), add two sheng of water, boil to obtain one sheng, and take. It induces immediate vomiting and cures. "Duan Ju" agrees. Zhi's formula: Use one sheng of vinegar, boil until dissolved, and take; it is highly effective.
Another formula: Three stalks of Gleditsia sinensis fruit (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus), roast, remove skin and seeds. Soak in five sheng of wine overnight, strain. Divide into three doses. "Duan Ju" agrees.
Formula for treating Gu poisoning from drinking, causing hard abdominal pain, yellowish-green complexion, emaciation, and unpredictable changes:
Take iron powder (Ferrum), pound and sieve finely. Separately pound black chicken liver (Gallinae Nigrae Jecur) and mix with the iron powder. Make pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take three pills. Severe cases resolve within ten days; mild cases resolve quickly. There is a separate formula for iron powder.
Another formula: One pig liver (Sus Scrofa Domesticus Jecur) and one sheng of honey. Simmer until cooked. Divide into twenty doses. Secret formula agrees with "Duan Ju"; Zhi's formula makes pills, which is also acceptable.
Another formula: Take jujube wood heart (Zizyphi Jujubae Lignum), chop to obtain one hu. Place in a cauldron, cover with water three cun above the wood. Boil to obtain two dou. Clarify the liquid. Simmer over low heat to reduce to five sheng. Fast overnight. In the morning, take five he. This will induce vomiting of Gu poison. "Duan Ju" and Yao agree.
Another formula: Realgar (Realgar), Cinnabar (Cinnabaris), and Veratrum nigrum rhizome (Veratri Nigri Rhizoma), each one liang. Pound into powder. In the morning, take one dao gui with well water (first drawn water of the day). This should induce vomiting and expulsion of Gu worms.
Another formula: Juice of Yincao (Platycodon grandiflorus seedling), drink one to two sheng. This plant is the seedling of Platycodon, commonly eaten by people.
Treatment for Gu poisoning that has eroded the lower body, causing perforation of the abdomen and intestines:
Take one green-backed frog (Rana temporaria), add chicken bone (Galli Os) (Zhi's formula: one fen, burnt to ash). Mix and insert deeply into the affected area. "Duan Ju" agrees. Zhi's formula has been highly effective; Yao's formula also agrees.
Another formula: Insert pig bile (Sus Scrofa Domesticus Fel) into the lower body, packing it deeply with cotton.
Another formula: Wu Gu Huang Wan (Five Gu Yellow Pill) is the most important formula for treating Gu. See the Emergency Section for details.
There are also naturally occurring flying Gu, resembling ghostly qi, which are difficult to treat.
Possessing real rhinoceros horn, musk (Moschus), and realgar provides protection against these types of Gu.
Yao's treatment for Gu poisoning with bleeding resembling chicken liver, expelling more than a shi yu, where four zang organs are destroyed but the heart remains intact, or nasal damage occurs:
Formula for awaiting death: Powdered Platycodon root (Platcodonis Radix), taken with wine, one fang cun bi per dose. One to two times daily. This is Ge's formula.
Imperial Physician Zhi has over ten transmitted formulas:
Root of Aristolochia debilis (Aristolochiae Debilis Radix), pounded into powder. Take one fang cun bi with water. It induces vomiting and expulsion of the toxin; it is extremely effective. The plant resembles a vine climbing on brushwood, with fruits like oranges.
For those fearing Gu poisoning who wish to take licorice juice:
Boil raw licorice root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and take. It should induce vomiting to expel the disease. For preventive use, roast and boil licorice root. It digests internally without inducing vomiting; it is highly effective.
Another formula: Roasted licorice root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), swallow the juice with each mouthful. If poisoned by food, it will induce vomiting; it is excellent. Constantly swallowing it prevents fear of toxins and Gu.
There is also San Jie Bai Du San (Powder to Resolve Hundred Toxins), found in the Drug Toxicity section, which is also a treatment formula.
Mulberry white bark juice (Mori Cortex Succus), one he, taken orally. Induces vomiting and diarrhea, expelling Gu.
Governor Xi Bian transmitted two effective formulas, claiming they are empirically verified:
Four Mylabris beetles (Mylabris), remove feet and wings, roast. Peach bark (Persicae Cortex), harvested on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, remove black skin, dry in shade. Euphorbia lathyris root (Euphorbiae Lathyridis Radix). Pound these three ingredients separately, sieve, and combine: one part Mylabris, two parts peach bark, two parts Euphorbia. Form into pills the size of a jujube pit. Take with rice broth. Expels Gu. If one dose is ineffective, repeat after ten days. Gu is common in Hongzhou. An old woman cured one person for twenty bolts of silk. The secret formula was passed down when her descendants committed crimes and the Governor obtained it. The old woman no longer received silk. Xi stated that over ten people were cured.
Another formula: Antelope horn skin (Saiga Tatarica Cornu), one fang cun bi; lotus root (Nelumbinis Rhizoma), four liang; Sophora flavescens root (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) and Coptis rhizome (Coptidis Rhizoma), each two liang; Angelica sinensis root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), rhinoceros horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu), and Cimicifuga rhizome (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), each three liang. Seven ingredients with nine sheng of water. Boil to obtain three sheng. Divide into three doses. Expels Gu. Xi stated he administered this to one person, who vomited several sheng of bee larvae and recovered immediately. This is Dr. Yao's formula.
Supplementary Formulas
"Qianjin Yi Fang" treats Gu poison:
A handful of white inner bark from the north side of oak trees (Quercus variabilis Cortex), five cun long. Boil in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng. Take on an empty stomach in divided doses to induce vomiting of Gu.
Also treats Gu poisoning with lower bleeding:
Burn the bark to ash, take one fang cun bi with water to induce vomiting of Gu poison.
"Waitai Miyao" for emergency Gu treatment:
Burn white pigeon feathers and feces to ash. Mix with water and take.
Yang Shi's "Chan Ru" treats Gu poisoning:
Raw hawksbill sea turtle shell (Chelonii Carapax et Plastrum), grind with water to a thick liquid. Take one zhan to dissolve naturally.
"Sheng Hui Fang" treats children with Gu poisoning, bleeding to the point of death:
Grind indigo plant juice (Indigo Naturalis), administer half he frequently.
