Ezu (Morning Sickness) refers to the condition where, after conception, the fetal qi rebels upward, causing nausea and obstructing food intake. If a pregnant woman has a congenital weak constitution and phlegm-fluid retention in the epigastrium, this disease occurs. The symptoms include a normal facial complexion, a peaceful pulse, but a feeling of excessive sleepiness with little rising, heavy limbs, dizziness and vertigo, aversion to food odors, a preference for sour and salty tastes, or a specific craving for certain foods; sometimes there is severe vomiting, or occasional vomiting of phlegm and clear fluid. In severe cases, there may be alternating chills and fever, mental restlessness and oppression, vomiting of phlegm and water, heat and fullness in the chest and diaphragm, and mental confusion making it hard to endure. These are all due to weak Stomach Qi combined with phlegm-dampness and Qi stagnation. There are also cases where the person was not originally deficient, but upon conception, the Chong and Ren vessels become congested upward, preventing Qi from descending, thus causing vomiting and rebellion. Another type arises because after menstruation ceases, water dampness infiltrates the Zang organs, preventing their Qi from circulating freely, leading to mental irritability and oppression, rebellious Qi, and vomiting. By around three months of pregnancy, vomiting gradually subsides. This is because at three months, the phase fire transforms into the fetus; the fetus cannot yet nourish itself from the mother, blood and Qi are not heavily utilized, and the essence of the five flavors is not fully transformed. The middle Jiao Qi becomes congested and solid, so the stagnant phlegm-fire and turbid foul Qi rush to the Stomach, causing symptoms like Ezu. After three months, as the fetal origin grows larger, the Zang organ Qi is mainly supplied to the fetus, there is no longer stagnation, and naturally, there is no rebellious Qi. Some women, regardless of strength, occasionally do not get sick. Why? Healthy women can conceive regardless of physical strength. Whether illness occurs during pregnancy depends not on physical strength but on the deficiency or excess of the Zang-Fu organs. If the Middle Jiao Spleen-Stomach Qi is robust, and there is no retained phlegm-fluid in the Stomach, the clear Yang ascends and turbid Yin descends normally, preventing turbid Qi from congesting upward, thus avoiding Ezu; this is what is commonly called "good fetal Qi." Furthermore, why do pregnant women crave sour and salty fruits? This is because yin and yang intersect, conception occurs in the Kidney, and transformation originates in the Liver; both the Liver and Kidney supply nutrients to the fetus, leading to relative insufficiency in these two organs, hence the craving for sour and salty items to self-nourish. For the above symptoms, mild cases require no medication and are common conditions. Severe cases require slight medicinal adjustment, suitable for Jiawei Shenzhu Yin (Modified Ginseng and Tangerina Peel Decoction). Examining ancient records, Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction) and Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) were used specifically for Ezu. Others used Baizhu San (Atractylodes Powder), Renshen Dingxiang San (Ginseng and Clove Powder), Renshen Jupi Tang (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction), and Xingpi Yin (Spleen-Awakening Drink); these formulas did not use Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) because it was feared that early in conception, Banxia's nature might disturb the fetus, and its acrid-warm dryness might scatter the fetal essence. However, Ezu cannot be stopped without Banxia; it must be stir-fried with ginger juice to mitigate its toxicity. Thus, Zhang Zhongjing used Renshen Banxia Ganjiang Wan (Ginseng, Pinellia, and Dried Ginger Pill), Luo Qianfu used Banxia Fuling Tang, and Zhu Danxi stated that fat people tend to have phlegm while thin people tend to have fire; he used Erchen Tang (Two-Chen Decoction) modified to treat pre-natal Ezu with phlegm-rebellion, vomiting, mental irritability, dizziness, and anorexia, which was effective, as the Classic states: "If there is a cause, there is no destruction" (Yougu wuyun). Xue Lizhai said: Banxia is the main herb for strengthening Spleen Qi and transforming phlegm stagnation. For vomiting due to Spleen-Stomach weakness, or phlegm-saliva congestion, reduced diet, and unstable fetus, one must use Banxia Fuling Tang, doubling the Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to stabilize the fetus and strengthen the Spleen; this is often very effective. If Ezu is accompanied by lower back pain, fearing miscarriage, one should still use Erchen Tang and Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction) plus Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Baizhu, focusing on harmonizing the middle and regulating the Spleen. One must not use ascending herbs, because since the rebellious Qi is already rising, using ascending drugs would create a situation of "ascending without descending," making the upper part more solid and the lower part more deficient, thereby accelerating miscarriage. If the left pulse is weak and vomiting persists despite various medicines, one should take Lixue Guiyuan Yao (Blood-Regulating Return-to-Origin Medicine) to cure it, as the Classic states: "Without Yin, there is vomiting." Various formulas are selected below for users to choose from.
Jiawei Shenzhu Yin (Modified Ginseng and Tangerina Peel Decoction): Treats Ezu, vomiting, rebellion, and anorexia after two to three months of pregnancy, or dizziness, vertigo, and fatigue.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix body) (wine-washed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried, each 2 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (8 fen, processed), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (each 4 fen), Sharen (Amomi Fructus) (3 fen, crushed), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) (one ball).
Add one slice of fresh ginger, decoct in water and take orally. For obese persons, add one liang of Zhuli (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia Juice) and one spoonful of Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Recens Juice).
Zhiou Antai Yin (Vomiting-Stopping and Fetus-Stabilizing Drink): Treats pregnant women's vomiting, ineffective with other medicines, cured by taking this.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) (bran-stir-fried, each 5 fen), Guangpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (processed), Baifuling (Poria) (each 8 fen), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) (soaked in water to remove yellow liquid, slightly stir-fried), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (each 3 fen).
Add three slices of baked ginger, decoct in water, and take slowly warm.
Guiyuan San (Return-to-Origin Powder): Treats pregnancy Ezu, continuous vomiting, headache, complete inability to eat, and ineffectiveness of various medicines.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix body), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (each 5 qian), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 liang 5 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (1 liang, processed), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (stir-fried), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (bran-stir-fried, each 2 qian 5 fen).
Grind into fine powder. Use five slices of ginger and one jujube as guides, decoct in water to mix, take 3 qian per dose. It is steadier to replace Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) with Sharen (Amomi Fructus) or Doukou (Amomi Fructus). If stomach cold is severe, users should exercise caution.
The following formulas are selected from *Jiyin Gangmu* for reference.
Shenzhu San (Ginseng and Tangerina Peel Powder): Treats pregnancy Ezu, vomiting phlegm-water, anorexia, and mental emptiness with irritability.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (white pith removed), Fuling (Poria), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (heart removed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (ginger juice processed, each 1 qian), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (5 fen), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) (one ball).
Guide with three slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water and take orally.
Qingzhuru Tang (Green Bamboo Sheath Decoction): Treats pregnancy Ezu, vomiting and anorexia. (This formula is clearing but not cold.)
Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) (size of a bullet egg, one ball), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baifuling (Poria) (each 1 qian 5 fen), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (processed), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (each 2 qian).
Decoct in water, take warm. Avoid mutton, chicken, fish, and wheat noodles. *Quan Shu* adds a pinch of Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Germ).
Jupi Tang (Tangerina Peel Decoction): Treats pregnancy vomiting and inability to eat.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried, each 2 qian), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (1 qian), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (1 qian 5 fen, processed).
Decoct in water and take orally. Ezu and anorexia are attributed to Spleen deficiency; vomiting is attributed to Fire. As stated, "All rebellious rushing upward belongs to Fire." In this formula, Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) pacifies the minor fire, Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) directs rebellious Qi downward, Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) open the appetite, and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) benefit the Spleen. Opening the appetite and benefiting the Spleen aims to allow stable grain intake.
Erxiang San (Two-Aromatic Powders): Treats pregnancy fetal movement insecurity, abnormal Qi ascent and descent, vomiting sour water, and heaviness when sitting or standing.
Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (1 liang, processed), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 qian).
Grind into fine powder, take 2 qian per dose, at any time, mixed with boiling water.
Baosheng Tang (Life-Preserving Decoction): Treats pregnancy Ezu, reduced appetite and vomiting, or accompanied by vomiting/diarrhea and thirst.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) (processed), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Wumei (Mume Fructus) (one version uses Wuyao), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (each 5 fen).
Add fresh ginger, decoct in water and take orally. If feeling nauseous and vomiting, add Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos). I suggest replacing it with seven grains of Sharen (Amomi Fructus) for stability. For vomiting/diarrhea and thirst, Wumei (Mume Fructus) is effective. Using Wuyao is incorrect.
Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction): Treats pregnancy Ezu, vomiting and mental irritability, dizziness and vertigo, aversion to food odors, preference for sour/salty, excessive lying down with little rising, joint烦痛 (pain and discomfort), emaciation with phlegm, and insecure pregnancy.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian), Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (remove if chest fullness exists), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) (omit if no phlegm-saliva), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (soaked in water seven times, stir-fried with ginger juice until yellow), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (wine-stir-fried), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (each 5 fen).
Add three slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, take on an empty stomach. *Qianjin Fang* lacks Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) but includes Zisuye (Perillae Folium) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma). If there is heat, add Chao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix stir-fried). If there is external heat with irritability/thirst or mouth ulcers, remove Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), add Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) and Jiuzhi Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma wine-stir-fried, 7 fen). If abdomen is cold with diarrhea, remove Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), add Chao Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex stir-fried, 5 fen). Stir-fried Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) does not cause miscarriage, but is unsuitable unless there is true abdominal cold and diarrhea. If Qi rebellion causes bloating, add Bran-stir-fried Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Sugeng (Perillae Caulis), and Zhi Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma processed).
Xiaohe Zhong Yin (Minor Harmonizing Middle Drink): Treats pregnant women's fetal Qi stagnation and fullness, food stagnation causing bloating.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fuling (Poria), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (ginger juice processed, each 1 qian 5 fen), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Biandou (Dolichoris Semen) (stir-fried, each 2 qian), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (5 fen).
One zhong and a half of water, add 3-5 slices of fresh ginger, decoct and take. If vomiting, add Zhi Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma processed) 1-2 qian. If bloating and Qi obstruction, add Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 7-8 fen. If fire stagnates upward, add Jiao Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus charred) 1-2 qian. If the woman has Qi rebellion and Blood stagnation, add Zisu Geng (Perillae Caulis) and Zhi Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma processed).
The following two formulas are from *Quan Shu · Xin Fang*, recorded for reference.
Liuyi Yigong Jian (Six-Ingredient Yi-Gong Decoction): Treats pregnant women with Stomach deficiency combined with cold and frequent vomiting.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (2-3 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried), Fuling (Poria) (each 2 qian), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (1-2 qian, stir-fried yellow), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (each 1 qian).
One zhong and a half of water, decoct and take.
Liyin Jian (Nourishing Yin Decoction) (Attached: Fuzi Liyin Jian [Aconite Liyin Decoction], Liuwei Huiyang Yin [Six-Ingredient Returning Yang Drink]): Treats pregnant women's Liver-Kidney Yang deficiency causing vomiting. This is a variation of Lizhong Tang (Middle-Regulating Decoction).
Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (3-5-7 qian, or 1-2 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2-3 qian, or 5-7 qian), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (1-2-3 qian, stir-fried yellow), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (1-2 qian).
Two zhongs of water, decoct to 70-80%, take hot. For miscellaneous diseases, add Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1-2 qian. Adding Zhi Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) makes it Fuzi Liyin Jian (Aconite Liyin Decoction); adding Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) makes it Liuwei Huiyang Yin (Six-Ingredient Returning Yang Drink), treating Mingmen fire decline and Yang absence within Yin.
Liangfang Banxia Fuling Tang (Excellent Formula Pinellia and Poria Decoction): Treats pregnancy Spleen-Stomach weakness, undigested food, and continuous vomiting.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (soaked in water seven times, stir-fried with ginger juice until yellow), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Sharen (Amomi Fructus) (stir-fried, each 1 qian), Fuling (Poria) (2 qian), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (5 fen).
Use fresh ginger, jujube, and Wumei (Mume Fructus), decoct in water and take. Some use Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) after 1-2 doses.
Fuling Wan (Poria Pill): Treats pregnancy irritability and dizziness, vomiting upon smelling food, or chest/abdominal stuffiness.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chi Fuling (Poria with red skin), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (soaked in water seven times, stir-fried with ginger juice until yellow), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (prepared, each 1 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (bran-stir-fried), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) (each 2 liang).
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey, size of wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, with rice water on an empty stomach, three times daily. Only use ginger and cinnamon if the pulse is slow and signs indicate cold; users should examine carefully. The original formula had Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) 2 liang, which seems inappropriate, so it is excluded. One version adds Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) de-heartened. *Zhouhou Fang* adds Bei Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus).
Kuyou Danfang (Bitter Pomelo Single Herb Formula): Treats pregnancy Ezu, vomiting and anorexia, dizziness making walking difficult.
Kuyou Pi (Pomeridae Exocarpium) (any amount).
One herb, decoct strongly in water, drink several cups to cure. For severe vomiting, add Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Recens Juice).
