If the Liver Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in eight days. How do we know this? The face appears cyanotic, the patient desires to lie prone and sleep, looks at people but cannot see them, and sweat flows continuously like water. (Another version states death occurs in two to three days.)
If the Gallbladder Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in seven days. How do we know this? The eyebrows droop.
If the Sinew Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in nine days. How do we know this? The fingernails and toenails turn cyanotic, and the patient calls out and curses incessantly. (Another version states death occurs in eight days.)
If the Heart Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in one day. How do we know this? The patient breathes with raised shoulders (shoulder breathing), gazes back fixedly, and dies immediately. (Another version states the eyes remain fixed and motionless, with death occurring in one day.)
If the Intestine Qi is exhausted (some texts specify the Small Intestine), the patient will die in six days. How do we know this? The hair stands straight like dry hemp, the body is stiff and unable to bend or stretch, and cold sweat flows without stopping.
If the Spleen Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in twelve days. How do we know this? The mouth feels cold, the feet are swollen, the abdomen feels hot, there is abdominal distension, diarrhea occurs involuntarily without regular timing. (Another version states death occurs in five days.)
If the Stomach Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in five days. How do we know this? There is pain in the spine, heaviness in the waist, and an inability to roll over. (Another version states the calf muscles become flat and atrophied, with death occurring in nine days.)
If the Flesh Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in six days. How do we know this? The ears are dry, the tongue is swollen, there is hematuria (blood in urine), and the stool is red and loose. (Another version states foot swelling, with death occurring in nine days.)
If the Lung Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in three days. How do we know this? The mouth is open, with only exhalation and no inhalation. (Another version states the nose and mouth are vacuously open with shortness of breath.)
If the Large Intestine Qi is exhausted, it is incurable. How do we know this? There is uncontrolled diarrhea; if the diarrhea ceases, the patient dies.
If the Kidney Qi is exhausted, the patient will die in four days. How do we know this? The teeth suddenly become dry and brittle, the face turns black, the sclera turns yellow, the waist feels as if it will break, and cold sweat flows like running water. (Another version states the philtrum becomes flat, with death occurring in seven days.)
If the Bone Qi is exhausted, the teeth become yellow and fall out, and the patient will die in ten days.
All floating pulses that lack a root indicate death. This refers to the Five Zang and Six Fu organs relying on the pulse having a root.
During the first three months of spring, Wood Qi is prosperous, and the Liver Pulse should appear first, followed by the Heart Pulse, then the Lung Pulse, and finally the Kidney Pulse. This is known as the compliant pulse of the Four Seasons corresponding to their prosperity. When June arrives and Earth Qi is prosperous, the Spleen Pulse should appear first but fails to do so; instead, the Kidney Pulse appears. This is called "Kidney reversing Spleen," and death will occur in seventy days. What is meant by "Kidney reversing Spleen"? In summer, Fire Qi is prosperous, and the Heart Pulse should appear first, followed by the Lung Pulse, but instead, the Kidney Pulse appears; this is termed "Kidney reversing Spleen." The critical period is May and June, avoiding Bing and Ding days. If "Spleen reverses Liver," death occurs in thirty days. What is meant by "Spleen reversing Liver"? In spring, the Liver Pulse should appear first but fails to do so; instead, the Spleen Pulse appears first; this is termed "Spleen reversing Liver." The critical period is January and February, avoiding Jia and Yi days. If "Kidney reverses Liver," death occurs in three years. What is meant by "Kidney reversing Liver"? In spring, the Liver Pulse should appear first but fails to do so; instead, the Kidney Pulse appears first; this is termed "Kidney reversing Liver." The critical period is July and August, avoiding Geng and Xin days. If "Kidney reverses Heart," death occurs in two years. What is meant by "Kidney reversing Heart"? In summer, the Heart Pulse should appear first but fails to do so; instead, the Kidney Pulse appears first; this is termed "Kidney reversing Heart." The critical period is June, avoiding Wu and Ji days. (Note by Chen Yi et al.: *Qianjin Fang* states that this section does not discuss Lung Metal Qi, which is an omission. The subsequent deduction of the Five Elements also contains some inconsistencies; further consultation of other records is required.)
