The thirty-six types of wind syndromes manifest merely as pain, itching, numbness, ulceration, swelling, and exhaustion. The one hundred and eight prescriptions are all agents for detoxification, insecticidal action, blood nourishment, Yuan Qi (primordial Qi) strengthening, and Qi regulation. Various experts' secret theories each excel in their own schools. Since ancient times, sages have formulated prescriptions and discussed pathologies based on specific principles. Leprosy (Lifeng) has various origins.
Northern people are generally courageous and live in high, dry regions; southern people are gentle and live in low, damp regions. Fujian and Guangdong often suffer from mountain miasma and insect poison. The Jianghuai region is frequently injured by sea water and cold ice. Islands face wind and waves, and mountain streams harbor malevolent spirits causing endless harm. Zhu Danxi specialized in treating external contractions, regulating Qi and clearing Yang, which suits the South. Li Dongyan focused on internal injuries, guiding phlegm and removing dampness, which suits the North. Sun Simiao, Wang Haogu, Xu Jingyang, Ge Hong (Baopuzi), etc., some focused on killing insects and detoxifying, others on nourishing blood and strengthening Yuan Qi, others solely on regulating Qi and clearing the spirit. Each had a main emphasis, yet their prescriptions were all effective. Each school has its secret tenets. If later generations can differentiate symptoms and use them appropriately, they will naturally be effective. One must extensively study various methods, summarize and select them to match the condition. If one obtains a single prescription and boasts of curing diseases, it is impossible that it would work in every case.
Just as Wulong Wan (Five Dragon Pill) has the merit of breaking through passes and capturing generals, and Qiannian Yao (Thousand-Year Medicine) has the wonder of reviving the dead, patients with paralysis, ulceration, and collapse cannot recover without Donghua Yusui (Eastern Jade Marrow). Those with mottled, disordered lesions cannot clear traces without Fengyi Qiangjiang (Fengyi Nectar). If the medication matches the condition, it is like an arrow flying from a crossbow; if used recklessly against the laws, it is like pouring water on stone—ineffective.
Huanglong Wan (Yellow Dragon Pill), also known as Shuizhu Huangxiang Wan (Water-Boiled Yellow Resin Pill), treats critical conditions of the thirty-six major winds. Wulong Wan (Black Dragon Pill) treats internal heat, phlegm-fire attacking upward due to wind syndromes, and whole-body strange leprosy, dryness, itching, and pain. Bailong Wan (White Dragon Pill), also called Bulong Wan (Dragon-Catching Pill), treats extremely fierce gout/wind-pain in the upper body. Hualong Wan (Flower Dragon Pill), also called Hunyuan Dan (Primal Origin Elixir), treats severe pain in the legs and knees below the waist. Chilong Wan (Red Dragon Pill), also known as Yili Jindan (One-Pill Golden Elixir), treats whole-body wind-pain with spasms and day-and-night crying. Qiannian Yao (Thousand-Year Medicine) is a formula left by the Patriarch Lazao Zhang Zhenren, also called Lingbao Qiannian Dayao (Spirit Treasure Thousand-Year Great Medicine), treating the thirty-six major winds and fourteen types of great leprosy with universal efficacy. Donghua Yusui (Eastern Jade Marrow) is a Bignonia seed ointment, treating foul-smelling ulcerative leprosy sores. Fengyi Qiangjiang (Fengyi Nectar), also called Tuiyun Jiu (Pushing Cloud Wine), treats five-colored nodules and cloud-like facial numbness. If used correctly, it is effective; if misused, it fails.
Pulse and medicine must correspond; diagnosis and observation must refer to each other. Treating according to symptoms brings immediate success. Clinging rigidly to formulas renders them useless.
For every set of symptoms, there is a corresponding pulse and complexion. Differentiation varies. Ancient texts include categories for Form Diagnosis, Sound Diagnosis, Color Diagnosis, and Pulse Diagnosis. To observe form for prognosis: The head is the mansion of clarity; if it tilts or vision is slanted, the Spirit is being lost. The back is the mansion of the chest; if the chest is curved and shoulders droop, Qi is failing. The waist is the mansion of the Kidneys; if rotation is impossible, the Spirit is exhausted. Bones are the mansion of Marrow; if one cannot stand long or walks trembling, bones are failing. Sinews and collaterals are the commanders of Blood; if they spasm and do not relax, Blood is drying up. This is Form Diagnosis.
To listen to sound: If speech starts light and becomes heavy, loud and forceful, it indicates excess External Contraction. If speech starts heavy and becomes light, deep and weak, it indicates deficiency Internal Injury. This is Sound Diagnosis.
To observe color: Green should resemble the luster of dark jade, not blue grass; vibrant like kingfisher feathers indicates life, dull like wet grass indicates death. Yellow should resemble silk-wrapped realgar, not yellow earth; bright like a crab's belly indicates life, dull like sophora fruit indicates death. Red should resemble cinnabar wrapped in cotton, not hematite; bright like a chicken comb indicates life, dark like epistaxis blood indicates death. White should resemble goose feathers, not salt; moist like pig fat indicates life, dry like dead bones indicates death. Black should resemble double-lacquered wood, not dirty earth; glossy like bird feathers indicates life, sooty like lampblack indicates death. This is Complexion Diagnosis.
The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: Leprosy pulses are Floating and Wiry (above the Guan position) for Yang, and Full and Large (below the Guan position) for Yin. Both Cun positions may be Floating and Tight or Floating and Surging. Floating and Moderate pulses are easy to treat; Surging, Large, Rapid, or Deep and Full pulses are difficult. If the pulse is Deep, the disease is actually above; if Floating, the disease is actually below; both are difficult to treat. This is Pulse Diagnosis. Thus, matching Yin and Yang, correlating formulas and pulses, if this principle is thoroughly understood, the medicine matches the symptoms, and why worry about non-cure? Clinging to a single rigid formula to treat all syndromes is not only useless but harmful.
Regarding Phlegm-Guiding and Dampness-Removing herbs: Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu), Prepared Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu), Soap Fruit (Zaojia), Poria Sclerotium (Fuling), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), Magnolia Bark (Houpo), Mirabilite (Yuanmingfen), Trichosanthes Seed (Gualouren), Picrorhiza Root (Huhuanglian), Lapis Glaucophanum (Qingmengshi), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), etc.
For dampness causing distension and phlegm knots, Magnolia Bark (Houpo) is essential. Mirabilite (Yuanmingfen) should only be taken as pills, not decoctions. For damp-phlegm forming masses, Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao) should be taken as powder; decocting it makes it foul and ineffective. Soap Fruit (Zaojia) expels phlegm rapidly via the bowels. Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) is a divine herb for lung heat; essential for foul-smelling leprosy phlegm, used only in pills/powders, not decoctions. For bone-steaming fever, Picrorhiza Root (Huhuanglian) works immediately but should not be decocted.
Regarding Qi-Regulating and Yang-Clearing herbs: Agarwood (Chenxiang), Sandalwood (Tanzhi), Camphor (Shenaio), Frankincense and Myrrh (Rumo), Costus Root (Muxiang), Amomum Fruit (Suosha), Cardamom (Doukou), Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit (Yizhi), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma), Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao - *Note: Use substitutes in practice*), Cinnabar (Dansha), Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), etc.
Qi blockage leads to weak Yang; Qi knotting hides Blood. All aromatic herbs can open subtle depressions. To unblock orifices and move Qi stagnation, Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma) and Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) are necessary. Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) and Pearl Powder (Zhufen) dissipate Qi accumulations but are only for pills/powders; decoction makes them bitter and causes vomiting. Aromatics should avoid fire.
Wind-Dispersing and Pathogen-Expelling herbs: Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang), Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Duckweed (Ziping), Sophora Root (Kushen), Bacopa Herb (Fengteng), etc.
Wind diseases arise from Wind-Damp-Cold-Heat sensations. Without dispersing pathogens, how can they dissolve? Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo) is indispensable. Sophora Root (Kushen) kills wind-leprosy insects and skin parasites instantly; it eliminates intestinal pinworms and is essential.
Blood-Nourishing and Fluid-Generating herbs: Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), Scrophularia Root (Yuanshen), Safflower Flower (Honghua), Rubia Root (Qiancaogen), Arnebia Root (Zicao), Dragon's Blood (Xuèjiē), Deer Antler (Lurong), Prunella Spike (Xiakucao), Mantis Egg Case (Sangpiaoxiao), Silkworm (Yuancang'e), Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), etc.
Scrophularia Root (Yuanshen) clears wandering fire and guides Blood back to origin. Safflower (Honghua) removes dead blood and generates new blood, essential for wind treatment. Dai Yanli stated: Prunella Spike (Xiakucao) suits Blood deficiency. Mantis Egg Case (Sangpiaoxiao) tonifies Yang and fills Essence, comparable to Ginseng. Late silkworm moth has rapid effects on regenerating marrow essence. Dragon's Blood (Xuèjiē) removes stagnant blood causing pain.
Stagnation-Scouring herbs: Hematite (Daizhe), Soap Fruit (Zaojia), Omphalia Mushroom (Leiwu), Honey, Human Tooth (Renya), Croton Seed (Qianjinzi), Human Urine Sediment (Renzhonghuang), etc.
Greasy lipid accumulation in intestines requires Soap Fruit (Zaojia). Hematite (Daizhe), named "Blood Master," expels blood stasis and prevents spasms. Omphalia Mushroom (Leiwu) removes accumulation and kills insects; suitable only for men. Women taking it suffer bloating, abdominal pain, fainting, or dementia due to phlegm-fluid obstruction. Hence, men use Leiwu, women use Zaojia.
Insect-Killing herbs: Tin Ash (Xihui), Yellow Sprout (Huanga - maggots), Realgar (Xionghuang), Nematode Herb (Heshi), Torrey Fruit (Feishi), Goose Feather Ash (Elingshui), etc.
Huanga (maggots collected before eating eggplants in April) washed in strong tea and roasted removes insect accumulation. Goose Feather Ash kills eroding wind-sores insects.
Paralysis and Atrophy herbs: Acorus Rhizome (Changpu), Gastrodia Tuber (Tianma), Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (Bixie), Podophyllum Rhizome (Fangji), Gentian Root (Qinjiao), Snake Shedding (Shetui), Sesame Seed (Huma), Mugwort Leaf (Loulu), Dendrobium Stem (Shihu), Xanthium Fruit (Cangercao), Tribulus Fruit (Bjili), etc.
Blood deficiency causes pain; Blood coagulation causes numbness. Blood-nourishing and Blood-moving agents are needed. Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (Bixie) tonifies Yang; Acorus Rhizome (Changpu) raises Yang. These are holy medicines for Wind diseases with deficient Yuan Qi, not just for paralysis.
Sinew Spasm and Limb Weakness herbs: Coix Seed (Yiren), Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), Eucommia Bark (Duzhong), Dipsacus Root (Xuduan), Cibotium Rhizome (Gouji), Polygonatum Rhizome (Weirui), White Snake (Baishengshe), Epimedium Leaf (Xianlingpi), etc.
Wind invading limbs requires Polygonatum Rhizome (Weirui) to search and eliminate toxins throughout the body. Impotence and sinew spasm require Epimedium Leaf (Xianlingpi) to arouse Yang; it is a great tonic for primordial Yang and a miraculous root-saving herb.
Those who love fruits need extra Camphor (Shexiang); those addicted to noodles need Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi). Those who took mercury powder must use Lead and Magnetite (Qianshi). If toxic drugs are ingested, urgent reconciliation is needed. Ginseng and Astragalus lack the lifting power of Cimicifuga and Bupleurum. This is a general overview.
Treatment order for Wind: First disperse Cold pathogens, then attack insect poisons, then regulate Yuan Qi, then nourish Yin Blood. Only when wind is dispersed, insects dead, and Blood/Qi clear should one extract sore filth, relax sinews, and promote hair growth. Tonics should be taken lifelong. Rushing without order leads to loss and harm. Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma) scatters turbid Qi upward to the right; Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) guides clear Qi upward to the left. Ginseng and Astragalus assist Qi but may attach to Yang pathogens and damage Yin Blood. Wind-leprosy prioritizes nourishing Blood and clearing Yang; thus, Ginseng/Astragalus are inferior to Shengma/Chaihu for opening the exterior. Camphor (Shexiang) dissipates fruit accumulation causing thirst. Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) dispels alcohol toxicity. Black Lead, Magnetite, and Sichuan Pepper absorb Calomel and Mercury toxicity. This is the general principle.
Modern practitioners use Bignonia Seed (Dafengzi) blindly. It is hot and toxic, drying phlegm and劫ting Blood. Impure processing causes blindness before cure. Bignonia Seed grows in hot eastern islands. Barbarians eat it to treat diseases and purge intestinal worms. Its white membrane damages eyes; its oil destroys Blood. Raw consumption harms organs. It is neutralized by soy sauce; users must avoid soy sauce. Combined with sesame paste, efficacy increases. It requires specialized processing. Zhu Danxi warned it damages eyes and moves phlegm/Blood.
Case: Wealthy man Chen Shanchang suffered wind for years. My father refused treatment due to his excessive wine and sex habits. Chen bribed my old servant to steal the processing method. He processed it for three years, consuming over 70 jin of flesh, cured without side effects. He thanked my father, revealing the servant's theft. Eye damage from wind disease cannot be blamed solely on Bignonia Seed, as many blind people never ate it. Do not cling to written words.
Initial treatment uses Decoctions for circulation, then Pastes/Wines for integration, Pills/Powders for maintenance. This is the orthodox way.
Decoctions act fast to scatter wind and unblock collaterals but harm Spleen/Stomach if used long. Once symptoms ease, switch to Pills/Powders to strengthen Spleen/Stomach. Pastes of Bixie, Kushen, Cangercao, Babao, Danggui, Baizhu, Dingongteng are effective but require proper processing. Medicinal wines are pleasant but dangerous in early stages. Early wind presents as small nodules; using wine too early drives toxins into collaterals, making the whole body diseased. After cure, wine helps penetrate tissues to prevent recurrence. Brain aromatics, Calculus Bovis, minerals, and spices are not for decoctions (avoid fire). They suit pills/powders. Order: Decoction -> Pill/Paste -> Wine after cure.
Fanatics use fire-steam therapy, harming fools. Wind disease roots in Zang-Fu; once manifested externally, severity decreases. Why use fire to drive toxins back in? Fire temporarily relieves but causes disaster soon. Wind-leprosy toxins first injure Zang-Fu, then tendons/bones. Like driving out bandits, why add steam to push toxins back into skin/muscles? Fire opens pores, allowing new pathogens in. Skin color changes, joints ache; fools think it's healing, but it's worsening. Weak patients suffer further Qi/Blood depletion, dry marrow, hard skin, weakness, dim eyes, stiff limbs. Avoid wind/cold/alcohol/sex, or face rotting/blindness. Insects thrive in heat/dampness, damaging marrow. After 120 days, heat-damp spreads, worsening condition. Urgent detoxification is needed. Many die during steaming. Steaming without prior medicine drives toxins to marrow. Steaming after medicine traps toxins. Initial treatment failure leads to quick disaster; late treatment leads to chronic harm. Beware! Zhu Danxi said: Kill insects, drain fire, then regenerate. Cooling Blood, dispersing wind, unblocking stagnation, descending Yang, ascending Yin are key. Who would use destructive fire therapy?
Pointing and cutting are painful. Acupuncture, fumigation, washing, and slow drainage are better.
Ulcers at wind-leprosy sites rarely heal completely. To heal, draw toxins to one spot, apply caustic medicine to ulcerate and remove roots. Do not apply to whole body if uncured; heat toxicity will overwhelm. Some foolishly pierce skin with needles and vinegar-ink, claiming to stop disease. But roots are in intestines, emerging via marrow. Piercing skin is useless, causing pain, scars, ugliness, and worsened disease. For wet itching, numbness, swelling, and fixed blood stasis, cutting/draining is okay. For purple clouds, vitiligo, blood ringworm, moxa circles can guide toxins out. For dry wind-bi, Qi/Blood are insufficient; piercing depletes them further. Skin relies on Blood. Paralysis is due to Blood deficiency. Internal medicine + external fumigation washes replenish Qi/Blood gradually. Do not suddenly use cutting/pointing. Wind-leprosy takes time. Slow medication is best. Patients have weak Qi/Blood; treatments are draining. Halfway through aggressive treatment, use tonics to support roots. Do not exhaust Qi/Blood, causing emaciation and shortened life. Using harsh needle/cutting methods speeds death.
