Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, sweating stops; after two doses, the heat is completely dispersed.
In this prescription, Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix) and Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) are herbs that induce sweating; why do they instead stop sweating? It is unknown that profuse sweating in Wind-Cold invasion is caused by the wind stirring the pathogen.
Now, using Ge Gen and Jing Jie to disperse the wind, when the wind subsides, the fire also subsides. Moreover, Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) is used to drain Stomach fire; when the fire calms, sweat naturally stops.
Additionally, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) nourishes Lung Yin, Fu Ling (Poria) promotes diuresis, and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) harmonizes the middle jiao. How could sweating occur then?
This condition can also be effectively treated with San Qi Tang (Three Marvels Decoction).
Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (1 liang), Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (each 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
Wind-Cold invasion presents with bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, abdominal fullness with slight panting, fever, and aversion to cold. People assume this is Cold damage pathogen entering the Yangming channel, not realizing it is Wind-Cold pathogen entering the Yangming channel. Since the Wind-Cold pathogen is milder than Cold damage, why does the Wind-Cold disease present similarly to Cold damage? It is unknown that while severe cases of Cold damage entering Yangming differ from Wind-Cold, mild cases are indeed similar. If there is a bitter taste, it is merely Stomach disharmony;
dry throat indicates insufficient Stomach fluids; abdominal fullness suggests food retention in the Stomach; slight panting implies rebellious Stomach Qi; fever and aversion to cold represent a slight struggle between Yin and Yang in the Stomach.
Since the symptoms resemble Cold damage, the treatment method must not be the same. Harmonizing the Stomach without necessarily draining its fire, and resolving heat without damaging Qi,
is the correct approach. Use He Jie Yang Wei Tang (Harmonizing and Nourishing Stomach Decoction):
Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (1 liang), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) (3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (3 qian), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (3 qian), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, bitter taste and dry throat resolve; after two doses, panting, heat, abdominal fullness, and aversion to cold disappear; three doses are unnecessary.
This formula clears Yangming fire without damaging Stomach Earth Qi, thus harmonizing the Stomach and dispelling pathogens.
This condition can also be treated with San Qi Tang (Three Marvels Decoction) plus 5 qian of Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber).
Wind-Cold invasion presents with dry mouth, desiring to rinse with water but not swallow. People assume Yangming fire is forcing heat to invade the Lungs, inevitably leading to epistaxis. They do not know that in winter Cold damage, when the pathogen enters Yangming, such symptoms occur; however, in spring Wind-Cold, how could this happen? Yet, since Wind-Cold symptoms mimic Cold damage, how can we guarantee no epistaxis will occur? However, Wind-Cold ultimately does not cause epistaxis. This is because wind nature is active and changing, unlike cold nature which is static and coagulating. Thus, in Cold damage, cold resides in the Stomach, forcing heat to the mouth, tongue, and throat, causing Yin-Yang disorder and epistaxis; in Wind-Cold, heat is forced upward. Although there is a desire to rinse with water without swallowing, the blowing wind dissipates the heat immediately. How could it lead to epistaxis? The treatment method is to drain Yangming fire, and dry mouth will naturally resolve. Use Jin Shi San (Metal and Stone Powder):
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (3 qian), Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix) (1 qian), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (5 qian), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) (5 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. The formula is named Jin Shi San (Metal and Stone Powder). After two doses, the condition is fully cured; three doses are unnecessary.
This formula solely drains fire in the Stomach without dispersing cold in the Stomach. However, Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) are purely fluid-nourishing agents.
They clear inflammation above and supplement water below. With Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to mediate, they can harmonize cold and heat instantly.
This condition can also be treated with San Qi Tang (Three Marvels Decoction).
Spring Wind-Cold presents with floating pulse, fever, thirst, nasal dryness, and ability to eat. People assume Yangming fire-heat, inevitably leading to epistaxis. They do not know
that if Cold damage does not cause epistaxis, the pathogen cannot exit, whereas Wind-Cold does not necessitate epistaxis. When Cold damage enters the Stomach, pathogenic fire-heat blazes, requiring food and drink to quell its flaming upward nature. Since the patient can eat and the pulse remains floating, the fire has not descended but must ascend, hence epistaxis occurs.
If Wind-Cold pulse is naturally floating, it does not mean the fire must ascend. Therefore, despite thirst and nasal dryness, the ability to eat indicates the fire can be restrained.
If fire descends rather than ascends, how could it cause epistaxis? The treatment method is simply to drain fire in the Stomach; there is no need to worry about epistaxis in the Lungs. Use Ning Huo Dan (Fire-Calming Pill):
Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (3 qian), Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) (5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, body heat resolves; after two doses, thirst and nasal dryness heal; after three doses, the floating pulse flattens.
This formula uses Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) to clear Stomach heat-heat; clearing still contains tonifying properties. Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) combined with Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) excels at clearing Stomach heat-pathogens, causing fire to descend rather than ascend. Furthermore, Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) pacifies Liver fire. A floating pulse indicates wind.
Once Liver fire is pacified, Wood Qi is calm, and wind has no movement. This is the subtlety of medication, achieved in one move.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Zi Fei Tang (Nourishing Lungs Decoction).
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (2 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (1 liang), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (3 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Spring Wind-Cold presents with spontaneous sweating. Physicians mistakenly induce sweating again. Urination is free and easy. People assume this is due to mistaken sweating in Cold damage, leading to exhaustion of internal fluids.
Who knows that in Cold damage, when the pathogen enters Yangming, fire burns internally, causing spontaneous sweating. Clearly, Yin fails to control Yang, leading to Yang leakage outward. Adding sweating induces further Yang leakage and Yin leakage. How could fluids not be exhausted internally? In Wind-Cold, spontaneous sweating is due to Lung Metal deficiency, not excessive Stomach fire. Re-inducing sweating depletes Lung Qi further, causing Metal cold and Water cold, leading to free urination. Thus, the treatment method is entirely different.
If one uses Cold damage treatment methods for Wind-Cold conditions, there will be disastrous changes in the disease. The treatment method should only tonify Lung Qi deficiency and secure the Cou Li (interstices), so sweating stops and the disease heals spontaneously. Use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) modified:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 liang), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (3 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (3 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (5 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (5 qian).
Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, sweating stops and fluids generate naturally.
This formula tonifies the Stomach and strengthens Spleen, making Earth prosperous to generate Lung Metal. Then Lung Qi is calm. Once Lung Metal is calm, Cou Li (interstices) solidify, and pores close naturally.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Wen Gu Tang (Warming and Securing Decoction).
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (each 5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (each 1 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (3 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Spring Wind-Cold presents with lower bleeding, delirium, and head sweating. People assume excessive Yangming fire, inevitably leading to madness. Who knows this is Heat Entering the Blood Chamber (Re Nu Xue Shi), appearing like madness but not truly mad? Although Cold damage entering Yangming also presents with lower bleeding and delirium, inevitably leading to madness,
in Cold damage, lower bleeding and delirium result from heat entering the Blood Chamber directly; in Wind-Cold, lower bleeding and delirium result from wind driving heat into the Blood Chamber. Although both involve Heat Entering the Blood Chamber, the severity differs greatly. Heat entering directly means heat is internal and external; wind driving heat means internal heat but no external heat. Given the difference in heat severity, why is head sweating identical? Because the Blood Chamber is located in the Lower Jiao, while pulses travel to the top of the head. Thus, once heat enters the Blood Chamber, its Qi desires to vent from the crown of the head downwards. However, since Lower Jiao heat is not removed, Qi from other organs does not respond, so head sweating stops at the neck. Cold damage and Wind-Cold have similar internal heat and identical head sweating.
The treatment method is to disperse Qi and guide heat outward, so all diseases heal. Use Dao Re Tang (Guiding Heat Decoction):
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 3 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (2 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (1 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (each 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
After one dose, delirium ceases; after two doses, heat retreats and sweating stops.
This formula is also a variation of Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction). But Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) solely drains fire in the Blood Chamber, whereas this formula simultaneously tonifies Liver and Gallbladder blood, ensuring blood sufficiency prevents Wood dryness, stopping it from overacting on Spleen-Stomach Earth. Thus, Stomach Qi is nourished, and Stomach fire calms. This is called guiding blood back to its vessels, which is essentially guiding fire outward.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Qing Shi Tang (Clearing the Chamber Decoction).
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (3 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) (5 fen), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Wind-Cold presents with tidal fever and slightly hard stools. People assume Cold damage pathogen has entered Yangming and is moving towards the Large Intestine. Who knows this is Dryness in the Lung Meridian? The Large Intestine and Lungs are exterior-interior related. Lung dryness causes Large Intestine dryness. One does not need pathogen entering the Large Intestine to have dry stool.
Wind injuring Lung Metal easily dries Lung Qi, unlike Cold injuring Lung Metal which causes coldness. Thus, once wind pathogen enters the Lung, the Large Intestine easily becomes dry and constipated.
However, the pathogen is far from the Large Intestine. It is not that邪火 (pathogenic fire) has formed dry stool in the Large Intestine requiring purgation. Therefore, Wind-Cold tidal fever with slightly hard stools is clearly a symptom of Metal dryness, not excessive fire. The treatment method should moisten Lung dryness. However, bowel opening and closing are governed by the Kidney. If Kidney water is sufficient, the Large Intestine naturally moistens. Use Jin Shui Liang Run Tang (Metal and Water Dual-Moistening Decoction):
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (1 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (1 liang), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Take continuously for two doses to resolve slight hardness; take another two doses to eliminate tidal fever.
This formula uses Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) to supplement water. When water is sufficient, Lung Metal does not need to generate Kidney water, so Lung Qi is not dry. Plus Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) directly tonifies Lung Metal. Metal and Water are dual-moistened. Naturally, the Large Intestine receives moisture and transport, allowing smooth flow downward. With no obstruction worries, how could residual heat remain?
This condition can also be effectively treated with Di Yu Re Jie Tang (Di Yu Heat-Resolving Decoction).
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (5 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (3 qian), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (each 2 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Spring Wind-Cold presents with delirium, tidal fever, and slippery pulse. People assume Yangming Stomach heat, a transmitted disease of Cold damage. Who knows Spring Warmth conditions also have Stomach heat? Spring promotes growth, so Stomach heat is natural. Added to spring wind evaporation, the natural heat in the Stomach is uncontainable. Now, encountering cold wind that violates spring regulations, suppressing the stagnant Qi, unable to reach directly, causes delirium and fever.
However, if there is no phlegm in the Stomach, high fever and heavy-delirium voice occur; if there is phlegm in the Stomach, tidal fever and low-delirium voice occur. A slippery pulse confirms phlegm. Use Xiao Tan Ping Wei Tang (Phlegm-Resolving and Stomach-Pacifying Decoction):
Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) (each 1 liang), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) (each 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, delirium stops; after two doses, tidal fever disappears; three doses are unnecessary.
This formula primarily uses Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) because it disperses Yin-heat and especially clears Stomach fire. Combined with Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), it clears Upper Jiao inflammation. Once fire-heat goes, phlegm loses support. Plus Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), and Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) promote water metabolism, removing dampness and reducing phlegm-fluids. Once phlegm reduces, fire-heat decreases further. How could stifling tidal fever confuse the Heart Spirit?
This condition can also be effectively treated with Xuan Huang Re Jie San (Xuan Huang Heat-Resolving Powder).
Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (each 2 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (1 liang), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Fu Ling (Poria) (each 5 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) (5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Spring Wind-Cold presents with afternoon tidal fever, no aversion to cold, and solitary speech as if seeing ghosts. People assume Yangming syndrome, Cold damage impending madness. Who knows this is excessive Spring Warmth? When Cold damage presents this, it is Excess Pathogen; when Spring Warmth presents this, it is Deficient Pathogen.
Excess pathogen disease comes from Taiyang. Its pathogen is blazing and uncontrollable, inevitably leading to madness. If deficient pathogen disease comes from Shaoyin, although its pathogen is vigorous, it is declining. There will absolutely no madness disaster. Excess pathogen is Yang pathogen, while deficient pathogen is Yin pathogen. Yang pathogen "seeing ghosts" means fire forces Heart Spirit outward, and Spirit does not guard the Heart Palace. Yin pathogen "seeing ghosts" means fire draws Liver Soul outward, and Po (Corporeal Soul) does not guard the Lung residence. Thus, excess pathogen requires draining fire to calm the mind, while deficient pathogen requires clearing fire to nourish the spirit. Use Qing Huo Yang Fei Tang (Clearing Fire and Nourishing Lungs Decoction):
Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) (2 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (5 qian), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (1 liang), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Su Ye (Perillae Folium) (1 qian).
Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) (3 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (2 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, tidal fever stops; after two doses, ghost visions cease; after three doses, full recovery.
This formula consists entirely of Lung-clearing herbs. How can it calm Stomach fire? It is unknown that Stomach fire is transferred from the Lungs. Clearing Lung Metal causes the pathogen to come rescue the Lungs. With Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) as the sovereign herb, striking the pathogen halfway before it enters the Lung Palace makes the pathogen easier to expel. Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) calms the heart and promotes diuresis. The pathogen dares not force upward but sinks downward, fleeing via the Bladder. How can it enter Lungs or Liver to draw out my Hun and Po?
This condition can also be effectively treated with Zhi Zi Qing Gan Yin (Gardenia Liver-Clearing Decoction).
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (1 liang), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried), Fu Ling (Poria) (each 3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (2 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Wind-Cold presents with tidal fever, loose stools, free urination, and chest/diaphragm fullness. People assume Cold damage pathogen has entered Yangming, not realizing it is Spring Warmth heat remaining in Yangming. Wind injures the Lungs; the pathogen enters through the skin and should exit through the skin. Why does heat remain in the Stomach? The Stomach is the Mother of the Lungs. When the Mother sees the Child being invaded externally, she must avenge the insult. Seeing the Mother's retaliation, the external invader abandons the Child to seek the Mother. If the Mother's home is poor and weak, the invader abandons the Mother to seek the Child. However, the Stomach is the Sea of Water and Grain, ten times richer than the Lung Child's home. What advantage would the invader gain from the Child to abandon the Mother? Naturally, benefiting from the Mother's wealth, it abandons the Child's poverty, staying firmly. This is why tidal fever arises. Alternating chills and fever, free urination, and loose stools indicate Yin-Yang imbalance, causing failure of transportation and transformation. How can the chest and diaphragm feel comfortable? The treatment method is to remove pathogens in the Stomach, so Yin and Yang naturally rectify. Use Jia Jian Chai Hu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction):
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (5 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (each 5 fen), Luo Bo Zi (Raphani Semen) (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, tidal fever resolves; after two doses, Yin and Yang separate; after three doses, all symptoms heal.
This formula is also a variation of Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction). Luo Bo Zi (Raphani Semen) combined with Fu Ling (Poria) best separates Yin-Yang clarity and turbidity. Once clarity and turbidity are separated, cold and heat resolve naturally. How could there be chest fullness?
This condition can also be effectively treated with Sao Wei Tang (Stomach-Sweeping Decoction).
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) (each 2 qian), Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) (5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (3 fen), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (5 fen).
Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (1 qian), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) (8 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Spring Wind-Cold for four or five days presents with body heat, aversion to wind, stiff head and neck, fullness under the costal margin, warm hands and feet, and thirst. People assume simultaneous disease of Taiyang, Yangming, and Shaoyang. Who knows this is Spring Warmth, resembling Cold damage but not true Cold damage? Cold damage has simultaneous disease of these three Yang channels. Why does Spring Warmth show no difference? Spring Warmth involves wind injuring Shaoyang. Shaoyang is half-exterior, half-interior. All three Yang exteriors can be concurrently affected, and symptoms of the three Yang channels can appear together. Unlike Cold damage pathogen, which moves from Taiyang to Yangming (Taiyang symptoms persist); from Yangming to Shaoyang (Yangming pathogen remains); from Shaoyang to Jueyin (Shaoyang disease persists). Thus, treating Spring Warmth requires only treating Shaoyang alone, and diseases of all meridians heal. There is no need to treat the three Yang channels simultaneously. Use Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder):
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1 qian).
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (3 qian), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried) (1 qian), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, all symptoms heal; three doses are unnecessary.
Theoretically, draining fire in the Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian is sufficient. This formula also harmonizes Liver Qi, seemingly excessive. However, Shaoyang channel pathogen invasion is precisely due to excessive stagnation of Gallbladder Qi. Spring Warmth diseases often enter via Liver and Gallbladder. By treating Liver and Gallbladder, pathogenic factors inside and outside are thoroughly dispersed.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Ma Shi Shu Yang Tang (Ephedra and Gypsum Ventilating Yang Decoction).
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 2 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (5 qian), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 3 fen), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
When a woman's menstruation arrives just as she contracts Wind-Cold, presenting with fever, aversion to cold, chest and hypochondriac fullness, and delirium, people assume Cold damage Jie Xiong (Chest Binding). Who knows this is Heat Entering the Blood Chamber? Heat Entering the Blood Chamber occurs in both men and women. For men, it is wind driving heat into the chamber; for women, it is blood wanting to exit but heat closing it, transforming blood into heat. Although male and female symptoms seem different, the heat is the same. Thus, treatment need not differ greatly; use Dao Re Tang (Guiding Heat Decoction) as before. Dao Re Tang (Guiding Heat Decoction) best soothes Liver and Gallbladder Qi. Closing menstrual blood in the Blood Chamber is exactly a Liver-Gallbladder disease. The Liver stores blood. Without Shaoyang Gallbladder Qi promotion, blood does not exit outward. Now soothing Liver Qi, the closed blood cannot be stored by the Liver. Blood exits, and how can heat remain? Thus, after one dose, fever and aversion to cold resolve; after two doses, chest/hypochondriac fullness and delirium disappear.
This condition can also be effectively treated with Jia Wei Qing Shi Tang (Modified Clearing Chamber Decoction):
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each 1 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (5 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (5 fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
After Wind-Cold body heat, limbs and joints ache, and hands and feet are very cold. People assume Cold damage has transmitted from the Three Yang channels to Shaoyin. Who knows the person has inherent Kidney Water deficiency? After Wind-Cold, Lung Metal is scorched. Lung injury fails to generate Kidney, making Kidney Water more枯竭 (exhausted). Unable to irrigate the upper and lower body, naturally limbs and joints ache. Water exhaustion should trigger fire movement. Why are hands and feet cold? It is unknown that Water and Fire are originally rooted. When Water is prosperous, Fire is prosperous; when Water declines, Fire declines. On the day Water first dries up, Fire follows Water and hides, daring not boil. Thus, internal heat presents as external cold signs. The treatment method must not see external cold and recklessly use warming-hot drugs. One must urgently tonify Kidney Water to calm Kidney Fire, so Water is sufficient to control Fire. When Water and Fire interact harmoniously, how could limb/joint pain and cold hands/feet occur? Use Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) decoction:
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (each 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (4 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, hands and feet warm; after two doses, limb/joint pain lightens; taking continuously for four doses leads to full recovery.
Since wind pathogen is already dispersed in this condition, using more wind-dispersing drugs would further deplete Lung Qi, consuming more Kidney Water. Water deficiency leads to fire prosperity, inevitably...
