(See the chapter on Spasm.) The pulse at the Cun Kou (inch position) is floating and large; upon pressing, it feels choppy (slippery/rough), and the Chi (cubit position) pulse is also faint and choppy. This indicates retained food stagnation. This decoction is indicated.

If the pulse is slippery, it indicates excess. This is retained food stagnation; purgation will lead to recovery. This decoction is appropriate.

For diarrhea accompanied by anorexia, this indicates retained food stagnation. Purging is indicated. This... is appropriate.

(The rhyme verse is found in *Changsha Fang Ge Ku*.) Treats retained food stagnation located in the upper Jiao (upper burner); emesis should be induced. This powder is indicated.
Gua Di (Thistle Fruit), Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean), Xiang Chi (Fermented Soybean).

Treats Liver Zhu (Liver Fixation/Stagnation). The patient constantly desires someone to tread or massage their chest. In the early stage before discomfort arises, they merely desire drinking hot liquids; this formula is indicated.
Xuan Fu Hua (Inula Flower, 3 liang), Cong (Scallion Stem, 14 stems), Xin Jiang (Safflower-infused silk, a small amount).
The above three ingredients are boiled in 3 sheng of water to yield 1 sheng, taken in one dose.
The rhyme states: "The person with Liver Zhu desires chest treading." (Liver Qi stagnation reverses its flow into the Lung, known as a disease of "lateral" spread. The chest is the seat of the Lung; massaging is desired to unblock the Qi.) "A sip of hot soup brings immediate relief." (Desire for hot drinks indicates that stagnant Qi disperses when warmed.)
Xuan Fu Hua 3 liang, Cong 14 stems; Xin Jiang promotes circulation, used in small amounts from the beginning. (Xuan Fu Hua is salty and warm, directing Qi downward; Xin Jiang harmonizes Blood; Cong leaves unblock Yang...)

(The rhyme verse is found in *Changsha Fang Ge Ku*.) Treats the Fu Yang pulse being floating and choppy. Floating indicates strong Stomach Qi; choppy indicates frequent urination. The interaction of floating and choppy pulses leads to hard stools, and the Spleen becomes constrained (Pi Yue). This pill is indicated.
Ma Ren (Hemp Seed), Shao Yao (Peony Root), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), Nong Po (Magnolia Bark), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed).
Note: A floating pulse indicates excessive Yang; a choppy pulse indicates damaged Yin. The Spleen transports fluids for the Stomach; if Yin is damaged, the Spleen has nothing to transport. Furthermore, "Yue" (constrained) implies weakness. Spleen weakness...

(Also known as Shen Zhuo Tang / Kidney Fixation Decoction.) Treats Kidney Zhuo (Kidney Fixation) disease. The patient feels heavy in the body, cold in the waist, as if sitting in water, with normal appearance, free urination, and normal diet. The pathology belongs to the Lower Jiao. It results from prolonged exposure to cold dampness due to sweating during labor and wearing cold, wet clothes. For cases involving the lower waist... and those paying five thousand coins [contextual reference], this formula is indicated.
Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, 2 liang each), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Fu Ling (Poria, 4 liang each).
The above four ingredients are boiled in 5 sheng of water to yield 3 sheng, taken in three divided warm doses. The waist will feel warm.
The rhyme states: "Waist cold and dripping like sitting in a spring." (The Dai Mai [Girdle Vessel] binds the waist; Kidney Zhuo affects the Dai Mai, hence the sensation of sitting in water.) "Abdomen feels like a belt of five..."
You Zai Jing stated: The pathogenic factors of Cold-Dampness do not reside in the interior viscera of the Kidney, but in its external mansion (the lumbar region). Therefore, treatment does not lie in warming the Kidney to dispel Cold, but in warming the Earth (Spleen) to overcome Water. If Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Fu Zi (Aconite Root) were used, they would instead damage the Yin of the Kidney.
