Treats abdominal coldness causing borborygmus (intestinal rumbling) and severe pain, accompanied by rebellious Qi stagnation and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, and vomiting. This decoction is indicated for these symptoms.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one piece, processed), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Jingmi (Oryzae Semen), each half sheng; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang); Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, ten pieces).
Take the above five herbs. Add eight sheng of water. Boil until the rice is cooked and the decoction is ready. Strain to remove dregs. Take one sheng warm, three times a day.
Song says: Severe pain in the abdomen like thunder rumbling, chest and hypochondrium distended with vomiting. One piece of Fuzi, ten Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, half sheng of Oryzae Semen and Pinelliae Rhizoma boiled together with Glycyrrhiza.
Yu Xi's commentary: Borborygmus in the abdomen, rebellious Qi fullness in the chest and hypochondrium with vomiting, indicates Qi disorder. Pinelliae Rhizoma has the function of descending Qi. Severe pain in the abdomen indicates Cold. Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata has the function of dispelling Cold.
Treats abdominal fullness and fever persisting for ten days, with a floating and rapid pulse, but normal appetite. This decoction is indicated for these symptoms.
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), each three liang; Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, ten pieces); Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), five pieces; Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), two liang; Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), five liang.
Take the above seven herbs. Add one dou of water. Boil to obtain four sheng. Take eight ge warm, three times a day. If vomiting occurs, add five ge of Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma); if diarrhea occurs, remove Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma); if there is much cold... [text cuts off]
Song says: Fullness and constipation with a floating pulse, three liang of Gancao and Dahuang are used. Two liang of Cinnamomi Ramulus, five liang of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, ten Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, and five Aurantii Fructus Immaturus yield excellent efficacy.
Yu Xi's commentary: The disease has lasted over ten days, presenting with abdominal fullness and fever, and a floating and rapid pulse. A floating pulse with fever indicates pathogenic factors abundant at the exterior. Abdominal fullness with a rapid pulse indicates pathogenic excess in the interior... (The song is found in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.) Pressing the epigastrium reveals fullness and pain; this is an Excess syndrome. It should be treated with purgation. This decoction is suitable.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
Yu Xi's commentary: Excess syndromes require purgation. Dachengqi Tang might still be insufficient, let alone Da Chaihuhu Tang. Pressing the epigastrium revealing fullness and pain indicates the invasion of Taiyang pathogenic factors... [text cuts off]
Treats abdominal pain accompanied by constipation. This decoction is indicated for these symptoms.
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), eight liang; Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), four liang; Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), five pieces.
Take the above three herbs. Add one dou two sheng of water. First boil the first two herbs (Houpo and Zhishi), obtain five sheng of liquid. Then add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and boil to obtain three sheng. Take one sheng warm, adjusting dosage until bowel movement is achieved.
Song says: Pain with constipation clearly requires purgation. Four liang of Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, twice the amount of Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex. Use five pieces of Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, boiled separately then together; the modified method of Xiaochengqi Tang yields miraculous effects.
You Zaijing states: The intent of Chengqi Decoctions is to sweep away excess, hence Rhei Radix et Rhizoma is the sovereign herb. The intent of the Three-Ingredient Decoction (this formula) is to promote Qi movement, hence Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex is the sovereign herb.
Yu Xi's commentary: The reason this formula does not omit Rhei Radix et Rhizoma is that promoting Qi movement must first facilitate bowel movement. Once the bowels are unobstructed, the Qi mechanism of the intestines and stomach becomes smooth, allowing the Qi of the fu-organs to flow freely. When there is free flow, there is no pain.
