All acupoint measurements vary according to the size of the person's body. One must distinguish between men (left side) and women (right side). Measure the center section of the finger; the distance between the centers of the two transverse creases is one *cun* (inch).
This is the measuring scale for the whole body.
For moxa cones, they must be sized such that their base covers three *fen* (a unit of length, approx. 1/10 cun) at the heel (Note: Text likely implies specific sizing relative to coverage or a typo in original context, literal translation used). If insufficient, it may fail to cover the acupoint properly, preventing the closure of the point. The vital Qi of the meridians within the acupoint will not circulate, thus failing to draw out pathogenic factors and guide healthy Qi. Even for children, measurement must be based on the middle finger as the standard.
On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, before sunrise, one should use intent to identify moxa stalks that resemble human forms among the moxa. Pointing to them for moxibustion yields special efficacy. In my childhood, I saw this mentioned in a book, but I have forgotten which one. Moxa does not truly possess human form; it is merely given a human shape by intent amidst ambiguity. All methods are illusory, none are truly real; this is worthy of doubt.
The Yellow Emperor said: Woods such as pine, cypress, jujube, elm, willow, persimmon, and bamboo, when used for fire moxibustion, will inevitably damage muscles and blood. They must be used with caution and preferably avoided. For obtaining fire, it is suitable to use flint stones or crystal lenses/mirrors to focus solar fire during sunny days. On cloudy days, using locust wood (*Huaimu*) to generate fire is also good.
Because old prescriptions lacked methods for "draining fire," current examination dictates that all moxibustion must include draining fire. If fire is not drained, it may damage the head and eyes. First, moxa the four acupoints horizontally aligned on both sides of the spine (upper and lower). Wait until the moxibustion blisters erupt for over half a month, then moxa the two acupoints vertically aligned in the center of the spine (upper and lower). Five or seven days later, moxa the *Zusanli* (*ST36*) acupoints, five or seven moxa cones per point. Alternatively, needle insertion of 1.5 *cun* is appropriate; the method should be draining (*Xie*), not tonifying (*Bu*).
Old diagrams listed eleven acupoints, lacking provisions for women with bound feet who are shorter/smaller. This is unnatural; comparative measurement is necessarily inaccurate. There is genuine concern that acupoint locations will be inconsistent, causing pain in vain. Until the flesh ends, without measuring fingernails, cutting off [the reference], and using it as a substitute measure, it is not sufficient for use. Furthermore, referencing children over twelve years old with short heads/feet: if foot length is applied to head measurement, it is inaccurate. Only moxa the four downward acupoints.
Twelve acupoints: Within a month, for the first ten days, the "worm" head faces upward, moving from the heart to the head, visiting four acupoints; for the middle ten days, the head faces inward, moving from the heart to the knee, visiting four acupoints; for the last ten days, the head faces downward, moving from the umbilicus to the feet, visiting four acupoints.
One can know this through talismans or medication. For instance, purple silkworm larvae in sweat suggest the worm nature has become spiritual. One must be extremely precise and careful. If extracting worms without tonification, it indicates shallow learning and reckless action, wasting money with no hope of curing the disease. Is this not tragic?
The Master said: To treat *Chuan Shi Lao* (Transmitted Corpse Consumption/Tuberculosis), one must first understand that Healthy Qi and Toxic Fumes travel together. Thus, if there is doubt in the Zang-Fu organs, the worms become vigorous. Yang days grow male worms; Yin days grow female worms. They first consume the fat and essence of the Zang-Fu organs, hence their white color. After the Five Zang and Six Fu organs are damaged by consumption, skin gathers and hair falls out. Women experience amenorrhea (*Yue Shi Bu Tong*), blood vessels are damaged, and they cannot nourish the Five Zang and Six Fu organs. After seventy days, blood, Qi, and flesh are consumed, so the worms turn yellow-red, damaging muscles, leading to emaciation. Diet fails to transform into skin/nourishment; tendons relax and cannot hold. After 120 days, flesh and blood are exhausted, so the worms turn purple, consuming essence and marrow, transmitting to the Kidneys. Consuming essence makes the worms black. Consuming marrow leads to bone萎 (Osteomalacia/Atrophy), inability to rise from bed. Long-standing worms grow hair, mixed colors, embodying the Qi of the Five Zang and Five Elements. Transmitted to three people, they can fly themselves, resembling birds, many strange species. Once transmitted to the Kidney Meridian, it is incurable.
Methods recorded in texts (Mix herbs evenly):
The above six ingredients, grind into fine powder, mix uniformly. Take an amount equivalent to three large copper coins each time, taken with the following decoction.
*Scallion White* (*Xiebai*, specifically *Panax notoginseng* stem per text note) - 37 stems; *Qinghao* (Sweet Wormwood) - 2 handfuls; *Gancao* (Licorice Root) - 2 stems, approx. 5 *cun*; *Congbai* (Scallion White) - 14 stems; *Taozhi* (Peach Twig, use white, tender branches from southeast) - quantity unspecified; *Liuzhi Sangbai* (Willow Twig & Mulberry Bark, some say Mulberry Twig); *Suan Shiliugen* (Root of Sour Pomegranate, some say branch, each 2 handfuls, approx. 7 *cun*).
The above eight ingredients must be selected in a clean place. Use four *sheng* (approx. 8 liters) of urine from an uncircumcised boy (*Tongzi Xiaonian*). Decoct in a silver or ceramic vessel using moderate heat until reduced to one *sheng*. Filter out dregs. Divide into three cups. Mix the powdered medicine with the decoction and take orally. Take at dawn (*Wugeng*). If the patient is male, the woman decocts; if female, the man decocts. After taking, if nausea occurs, stop it with white plum flesh. When dawn ends, if abdominal borborygmus is felt, one must pass worms, foul matter, yellow fluid, abnormal feces, and foreign objects. If one dose does not result in evacuation, after walking for the distance a person travels in five to six *li*, administer another dose. At daybreak, administer a third dose. All doses should be taken warm. If diarrhea persists, use equal parts of *Longgu* (Dragon Bone/Fossilized Bones) and *Huanglian* (Coptis Rhizome), grind to powder, and take five *qian* mixed with boiled water. Follow with white plum porridge to replenish. Collect the expelled foul matter and worms in a basin. The worms may resemble dung beetles or snakes, or look like centipedes, spiders, or earthworms. Burn them immediately along with the filth, as they are urgent like oil fire. Change and burn all clothes, mats, and bedding touched by the patient. Eat scallion porridge. Near the end of treatment, dreaming of people crying goodbye is a sign of efficacy.
If worms are expelled, examine their mouths. If blue, red, or yellow, it is treatable. If black or white, they have eaten human essence/marrow and are untreatable. Although untreatable, this eliminates future risks.
When preparing this medicine, do not let the patient smell its aroma, lest the worms sense it. Even during extraction and decoction, do not let the patient smell it. Preparation must not take place in the patient's home.
