Jueque (CV14) is indicated for treating Gu poison (a traditional concept referring to diseases caused by venomous insects or magical poisoning). (Recorded under Heartache in *Tongren Shuxue Zhenjiu Tujing* [Illustrated Manual of Acupoints and Needling and Moxibustion of the Copper Man].) Folk medicine also employs moxibustion. In southern regions, if one suffers from Gu disease, after pressing on the epigastrium, apply large moxa cones, 100 moxa units (Zhuang), at this point. This method also treats Cat Ghost disease (a folk illness attributed to supernatural causes), which can also be cured by moxibustion. Additionally, apply 3 moxa units on the tip of the little toe. At this time, foreign matter will be expelled. If the Gu was contracted through alcohol consumption, liquid resembling wine will be discharged; if contracted through rice consumption, rice grains will be discharged; if contracted through meat or vegetable consumption, meat and vegetables will be discharged. The patient will then recover. This is highly effective and miraculous. All discharges occur from the moxibustion blisters. (From *Qianjin Fang* [Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold])
Master Mei treats sudden onset of Gu poisoning. Symptoms include hematochezia with blood resembling chicken liver, and deterioration of the Zang-Fu organs. Crush Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix [Balloon Flower Root]) to extract juice and administer 7 fen (approx. 2-3 grams); this is optimal. *Luyuan Fang* [Verified Records Formula] also states that for sudden Gu poisoning, blood resembles chicken liver, bleeding day and night. Crush Jiegeng into powder, administer with wine, one Fangcun Bi (approx. 5-10 ml volume of powder), three times daily. If the patient cannot swallow, pry open the mouth and force-feed. Another method uses Malin Gen (Iris lactea var. chinensis root) powder, administered with water, one Fangcun Bi. Vomiting will expel the toxin; this is extremely effective. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* [Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up One’s Sleeve] states that anyone suffering from Gu experiences severe heart and abdominal pain, as if being bitten by something. There may be hematemesis or hematochezia. If not treated immediately, it will erode the five Zang organs; once all are eroded, death ensues. Take one seed of Bimamu (Ricini Semen [Castor Seed]), peeled, and mix with 1 qian (approx. 3-5 grams) of Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas [Mirabilite]). Grind together, prepare as a single dose with fresh well-water. Administer continuously for 2-3 doses for efficacy. Although this prescription has not been tested personally, it is considered a remarkable formula.
Waiqiu (GB36) is indicated for injuries caused by dog bites where toxins fail to exit, leading to aversion to cold and fever. Quickly apply 3 moxa units to the bite site; recovery is immediate. (From *Tongren Shuxue Zhenjiu Tujing*). In late spring and early summer, dog bites can cause madness. Danger persists for over 100 days. One must abstain from consuming dog meat and silkworm pupae for life; ingestion triggers relapse, which is incurable. First, remove the evil blood. Apply 10 moxa units within the moxibustion blister. From the next day onwards, apply 1 moxa unit daily until 100 days have passed. Avoid alcohol. Every seven days, drink 1-2 cups of freshly crushed Jiuzhi (Allii Tuberosi Juice [Chinese Chive Juice]). If a snake enters the seven orifices during sleep, apply moxibustion to the snake’s tail to make it exit. Another method: slightly incise the snake’s tail with a knife, insert 7 grains of Huajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium [Sichuan Pepper]), and the snake will exit spontaneously. After expulsion, rapidly grind Xionghuang (Realgar [Arsenic Sulfide]) and Zhusha (Cinnabar [Mercury Sulfide]) into fine powder, mix with Ginseng Tang (Ginseng Decoction), and administer to extract snake venom. (From *Danfang* [Single Formulas])
People living in mountainous areas who are bitten by snakes should immediately urinate on the wound, wipe dry, and treat with moxibustion for efficacy.
*Chaoye Qianzai* [Records of the Court and the World] records applying moxa cones to the site of a venomous snake bite to draw out toxic vapors, resulting in recovery. Apply thin slices of Dutou Suan (Allium unibracteatum [Single-Scale Garlic]) to the bite site and moxibustate until heat penetrates, then stop. Apply 21-27 moxa units directly on the snake venom site. If moxa is unavailable, use the flame size to match the size of the wound. (From *Qianjin Yifang* [Supplement to Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold]) Rabid dog bites require sucking out all evil blood thoroughly, followed by 100 moxa units, then daily moxibustation for 100 days. If blood does not flow, avoid alcohol and pork for life. (From *Qianjin Yifang*)
