Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) [from Qian Yi's *Xiao'er Yaozheng Zhijue*]: Treats insufficiency of the Liver and Kidney, depletion of True Yin, exhaustion of Essence and Blood, emaciation and weakness, lower back pain and soreness of the feet, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, phlegm caused by water overflowing, fever with cough, dizziness and vertigo, tinnitus and deafness, spermatorrhea and hematochezia, Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst) with dysuria, blood loss and aphonia, dry tongue and sore throat, toothache due to deficient fire, pain in the heels, sores and ulcers in the lower body, and other symptoms.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) (8 liang), Cornus Fruit (Shan Yu Rou) (moistened with wine), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao) (each 4 liang), Poria (Fu Ling) (mixed with milk and stir-fried), Moutan Bark (Dan Pi), Alisma Rhizome (Ze Xie) (each 3 liang).
Grind into powder and make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take on an empty stomach with salted water decoction. If used as a decoction, adjust the dosages accordingly.
Cui Shi Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill of Master Cui) [from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*]: Treats decline of Fire at the Gate of Life (Ming Men), failure to warm Earth (Spleen/Stomach), resulting in deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, poor appetite, diarrhea, and abdominal distension; or exhaustion of Primordial Yang, impotence and cold semen, pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, frequent nocturnal urination, soreness of the knees and weakness of the lower back, and blurred vision.
This consists of the previous six ingredients plus Cinnamon Twig (Rou Gui) and Prepared Aconite Root (Zhi Fu Zi), each 1 liang.
Qiwei Wan (Seven-Ingredient Pill): Treats Qi deficiency of the Liver Channel, where sinews lose nourishment, transforming into a cold syndrome, leading to pain in bones and sinews, weak legs and reluctance to walk; as well as after excessive use of cooling medicines for Shang Han (Cold Damage), causing lack of Fire in Water, and traction/spasms of hands and feet; or Blood deficiency of the Liver Channel, leading to dryness-fire contracting sinews, transforming into tubercles and scrofula.
This consists of the previous six ingredients plus Cinnamon Twig (Rou Gui) 1 liang.
Duqi Wan: Treats laborious cough, benefiting the source of the Lung to generate Kidney Water.
This consists of the previous six ingredients plus Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi).
Baxian Changshou Wan (Eight-Immortal Longevity Pill): Treats deficiency damage and劳热 (deficiency heat).
This consists of the previous six ingredients plus Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi) 2 liang and Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong) 3 liang.
Mingmu Dihuang Wan (Eyesight-Improving Rehmannia Pill) [from Li Dongyuan]: Treats blurred vision due to Kidney deficiency.
This consists of the previous six ingredients plus Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu), Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui Shen), coated with Cinnabar (Zhu Sha).
Zishen Shenggan Yin (Kidney-Nourishing Liver-Generating Decoction) [from Yang Kui]: Treats Blood deficiency with Qi stagnation, or binding pain in shoulders and back, or pain in the epigastrium overlying the heart, or Liver Fire郁结 (stagnating) in the Stomach, leading to fatigue and desire to lie down, poor appetite, thirst and dry throat, as well as urinary incontinence and frequency in women.
This consists of the previous six ingredients plus Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu), Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Bai Zhu), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui), and Licorice Root (Gan Cao).
Ziyin Shenqi Wan (Yin-Nourishing Kidney-Qi Pill): Treats widening and gradual dispersion of the Shen Shui (spiritual water in the eye), or vision as if walking in fog and dew, gradually seeing black spots in the air, and diplopia.
Over time, the light fails to converge, and internal cataracts with pale white pupils appear.
This consists of the previous six ingredients minus Cornus Fruit (Shan Yu Rou), plus Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu), Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui Shen), and Prepared Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang), coated with Cinnabar (Zhu Sha).
Zhibai Bawei Wan (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Eight-Ingredient Pill): Treats hyperactive fire due to Yin deficiency, bone萎 (atrophy/withering), and marrow exhaustion.
This consists of the previous six ingredients plus Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhi Mu) and Phellodendron Bark (Huang Bo), each 2 liang.
Jiawei Dihuang Wan (Modified Rehmannia Pill): Treats Liver-Kidney Yin deficiency, itching and discharge from ears, or blurred vision with phlegm-asthma, or heat-thirst and difficult urination.
This consists of the previous six ingredients plus Prepared Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang), Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu), and Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi).
Zuo Gui Yin (Left Restoring Decoction) [from Zhang Jingyue]: Treats dried-up Kidney Water, with deficient fire steaming upwards to the Spleen and Stomach, damaging Yin Earth, leading to inability to eat, dry constipation, and even obstruction of the Three Yang channels, potentially developing into Ye Ge (dysphagia/choking). If treated early, there is no case that does not heal. One should add Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) and White Peony Root (Bai Shao) to this formula to treat black tongue and scorched lips with intense thirst and desire to drink after Shang Han, which must be due to excessive use of attacking and cold-cooling medicines; this formula rescues it. For malaria combined with dryness syndrome, where heat is heavy and cold is light, this formula is even more suitable.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) (3-4 qian, or increase to 1-2 liang), Cornus Fruit (Shan Yu Rou) (1-2 qian, use less if sourness is disliked), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao) (2 qian), Poria (Fu Ling) (1.5 qian), Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi) (2 qian), Licorice Root (Gan Cao) (1 qian).
Decoct two cups of water to seven-tenths. Take far from meals.
If Lung heat causes irritability, add Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong) 2 qian. If Blood stagnation, add Moutan Bark (Dan Pi) 2 qian. If Heart heat causes restlessness, add Scrophularia Root (Xuan Shen) 2 qian. If Heat in Blood moves recklessly, add Prepared Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) 3-4 qian. If Yin deficiency causes unrest, add Glossy Privet Fruit (Nv Zhen Zi) 2 qian. If upper excess and lower deficiency, add Achyranthes Root (Niu Xi) 2 qian to guide downwards. If Blood deficiency with dryness-stagnation, add Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) 2 qian. If Spleen heat causes easy hunger, add White Peony Root (Bai Shao) 2 qian. If Kidney deficiency causes bone-steaming and profuse sweating, add Cortex Lycii (Di Gu Pi) 2 qian.
Zuo Gui Wan (Left Restoring Pill) [from Zhang Jingyue]: Treats insufficiency of True Yin and Kidney Water, failing to nourish Ying and Wei, gradually leading to weakness, or alternating deficient heat, spontaneous sweating, and night sweats, or Spirit not guarding its residence, Blood not returning to its origin, or involuntary spermatorrhea and dysuria, or dry mouth and tongue, or sore lower back and soft legs, or dizziness, blurred vision, and deafness. For all symptoms such as internal depletion of Essence and Marrow, and exhaustion of Jin-Ye (Body Fluids), one should quickly strengthen the Master of Water to cultivate the Primordial Yin of the Left Kidney, so that Essence and Blood will naturally fill. This formula governs.
Large Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) (8 liang), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao), Cornus Fruit (Yu Rou), Goji Berry (Gou Qi), Dodder Seed (Tu Si Zi) (processed), Deer Antler Glue (Lu Jiao Jiao) (chopped and stir-fried until popping), Tortoise Plastron Glue (Gui Jiao) (chopped and stir-fried until popping, each 4 liang), Achyranthes Root (Niu Xi) (wine-washed and steamed, 3 liang, do not use if essence slips easily).
Make honey pills. Take over 100 pills before each meal with boiling clear soup or light salted soup. If Pure Yin is lost and deficient fire flares upward, use a pure Yin and extremely quiet agent; remove Deer Antler Glue and Goji Berry from this formula, add Glossy Privet Fruit (Nv Zhen Zi) and Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong) 3 liang. If Fire scorches Lung Metal causing dry cough and much sputum, add Lily Bulb (Bai He) 3 liang. If Qi is deficient, add Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) 3-4 liang. If dry constipation, remove Dodder Seed (Tu Si Zi) and add Cistanche Stem (Rou Cong Rong) 3 liang. If slight Blood deficiency and stagnation, add Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) 4 liang. If sore and painful waist and knees, add Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong) 3 liang, stir-fried with salt water. If Zang-Fu are peaceful without fire but Kidney Qi is insufficient, add Psoralea Fruit (Po Gu Zhi), Lotus Seed (Lian Rou), and Walnut Meat (Hu Tao Rou) de-husked (each 4 liang); Tortoise Plastron Glue is not needed.
The above pills: The Five Fluids are all governed by the Kidney, so all herbs belonging to the Yin aspect travel to the Kidney. Some say guidance exercises are necessary; this shows limited insight.
You Gui Yin (Right Restoring Decoction) [from Zhang Jingyue]: This is a formula to benefit Fire. For cases where Yang of the Gate of Life declines and Yin prevails, this formula with modifications is appropriate. For treating Yin excess repelling Yang, true cold with false heat, etc., add Alisma Rhizome (Ze Xie) 2 qian. After decocting, immerse in cold water to cool before taking; this is especially excellent.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) (3-4 qian, or increase to 1-2 liang), Cornus Fruit (Yu Rou) (1 qian), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao) (2 qian), Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong) (ginger-processed, 2 qian), Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi) (2 qian), Roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao) (1-2 qian), Cinnamon Twig (Rou Gui) (1-2 qian), Prepared Aconite Root (Zhi Fu Zi) (1-3 qian).
Decoct two cups of water to seven-tenths. Take far from meals. If Qi deficiency and Blood collapse, or syncope/coma, or sweating or dizziness, or false mania, or shortness of breath, one must greatly add Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Bai Zhu), using them as appropriate. If frequent pain in the lower abdomen, add Evodia Fruit (Wu Zhu Yu) 6-7 fen. If Fire decline fails to warm Earth, causing vomiting, hiccups, and acid regurgitation, add Roasted Ginger (Pao Jiang) 2-3 qian. If Yang decline with middle cold, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, add Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) and Nutmeg (Rou Dou Kou), using them as appropriate. If leukorrhea and dribbling urine do not stop, add Psoralea Fruit (Po Gu Zhi) 1 qian. If Blood is scanty and stagnant with soft and painful waist and knees, add Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) 2-3 qian.
You Gui Wan (Right Restoring Pill) [from Zhang Jingyue]: Treats insufficiency of Primordial Yang, or congenital endowment decline, or excessive labor injury, leading to decline of Fire at the Gate of Life, failure to warm Earth, resulting in deficiency-cold of Spleen and Stomach, reduced food intake, or nausea, bloating, or reverse flow and dysphagia, or aversion to cold, or umbilical and abdominal pain, or loose stools with frequent diarrhea, or spontaneous urinary leakage, deficiency-dribbling and cold hernia, or Cold invading溪谷 (valleys/clefts) causing joint pain and bi-syndrome, or Cold in the Lower Jiao causing water retention and edema. In short, those with insufficiency of True Yang must have mental fatigue and cowardly Qi, or palpitations and unrest, or limbs unable to gather/support, or seeing evil spirits, or impotence due to Yang decline. Quickly benefit the Source of Fire to cultivate the Primordial Yang of the Right Kidney, so that Spirit and Qi will become strong. If Bawei Wan fails to cure, take this formula, or use You Gui Yin.
Large Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) (8 liang), Cornus Fruit (Shan Yu Rou), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao), Goji Berry (Gou Qi), Dodder Seed (Tu Si) (processed), Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong) (ginger-fried), Deer Antler Glue (Lu Jiao Jiao) (fried until popping, each 4 liang), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) (3 liang, do not use if stools are loose), Prepared Aconite Root (Fu Zi), Cinnamon Twig (Rou Gui) (each 2 liang).
Make honey pills. Take as previously described. Or make pills the size of bullet seeds, chew 2-3 pills each time, swallow with white soup; the effect is particularly rapid. If Yang decline and Qi deficiency, one must add Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) as the master herb, because the function of Ginseng enters the Yang aspect with Yang herbs and the Yin aspect with Yin herbs. To tonify the Yang of the Gate of Life, adding Ginseng is essential for swift effect. If Yang deficiency with seminal emission, or turbid leukorrhea and loose stools, add Psoralea Fruit (Bu Gu Zhi) wine-fried 3 liang. If undigested food diarrhea or Kidney diarrhea does not stop, add Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi) 3 liang and Nutmeg (Rou Dou Kou) 3 liang, fried in flour to remove oil.
