The kidneys are attached below the fourteenth vertebra of the spine. There are two kidneys, shaped like kidney beans, lying side by side and curved, attached to both sides of the spine, each one cun and five fen away from the spine. They are wrapped in yellow adipose tissue externally and have two ligaments each; the upper ligament connects to the Heart, and the lower ligament trends downward toward the lower spine. The large bone is at the end of the spinal column, about half the size of a hand, with two foramina in the middle through which the renal ligaments pass. These ascend through the spinal cord to the brain, connecting to the Sea of Marrow (Sui Hai). For guiding drugs (Yin Jing Bao Shi), use Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), and Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). At You hour (5-7 PM), Qi and Blood flow into the Kidneys.
The Foot-Shaoyin Meridian belongs to the Kidney Meridian. It runs from under the little toe to the sole of the foot, below Ran Gu (KI 2) behind the medial malleolus. [Ran Gu is located inside the ankle, below the large bone anteriorly.] A branch enters the heel internally, running medially, emerging from the medial aspect of the leg and ascending along the medial thigh. [Ascending along the posterior-medial aspect of the thigh.] It penetrates beside the spine and connects to the Bladder. The straight branch passes from the Kidney through the Liver and Diaphragm, enters the Lung, and follows the throat to the root of the tongue. Another branch emerges from the Lung, connects to the Heart, and pours into the chest to connect with the Jueyin Meridian.
The Pericardium, also known as the Master of the Heart (Shou Xin Zhu), is located above the transverse membrane and below the vertical membrane beneath the Heart. The part adhering to the transverse membrane, within the red-yellow adipose tissue, is the Heart. Outside this adipose tissue, there are fine fibrous membranes like silk threads connecting to the Heart and Lungs; this is the Pericardium. It corresponds to the location of Dan Zhong (CV 17), which is referred to as the "Official of the Envoy." For guiding drugs, use Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex). At Xu hour (7-9 PM), Qi and Blood flow into the Pericardium Collateral.
The Hand-Jueyin Meridian is the Dan Zhong, originating in the chest, belonging to the Pericardium Palace, descending through the diaphragm, and sequentially connecting with the Sanjiao Fu organs. A branch follows the chest, emerges from the hypochondrium, ascends to the axilla, runs along the medial arm, passes below the elbow, enters the palm, and extends directly to the middle finger. Another branch diverges from the palm to connect with the ring finger. [A branch diverges from the palm to the ring finger.]
The Sanjiao (Triple Burner) represents the three primordial Qi energies of the human body. It commands all Zang and Fu organs, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive) Qi, meridians, and the Qi of the interior, exterior, left, right, upper, and lower. When the Sanjiao is unobstructed, everything within and without, on the left and right, above and below, becomes unobstructed. Its role in irrigating the entire body, harmonizing the internal and external, nourishing the left and right, guiding the upper and venting the lower, is unparalleled. For guiding drugs, use Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). At Hai hour (9-11 PM), Qi and Blood flow into the Sanjiao.
The Hand-Shaoyang Meridian of the Sanjiao originates at the tip of the fourth finger (ring finger). [Originating at the tip of the ring finger.] It follows the dorsal aspect of the hand and wrist, emerges on the lateral aspect of the arm, passes above the elbow to the shoulder and Que Pen (SI 13), connects, scatters, and connects with the Pericardium Meridian. It descends through the diaphragm and belongs to the Sanjiao. A branch rises from Dan Zhong and Que Pen, passes behind the neck and ear to the apex of the ear, curves down to the cheek and still to the infraorbital region. [The infraorbital region is below the eye.] Another branch enters the ear and communicates between the corners of the eyes. [A branch enters the ear from behind, exits in front of the ear, and reaches the outer canthus of the eye.]
