Zhuhan Dangjing Decoction (Cold-Expelling Tremor-Dispelling Decoction): This formula has warm properties and is specifically used to treat children with congenital constitutional deficiency, or those whose chronic illness has not resolved, or who develop slow jing syndrome (a chronic deficiency-type condition characterized by convulsions and altered consciousness) after smallpox or measles due to the mistaken use of cold-natured drugs causing diarrhea and vomiting. In such critical situations, this formula should be administered promptly. It can warm and disperse cold-phlegm, open the chest and diaphragm, stop vomiting, and dispel evil tremors, as described in the phrase "restoring vital qi from the realm of nothingness." After one or two doses, if vomiting gradually ceases, it indicates efficacy. As long as the pattern is clearly identified as deficiency-cold, it should be taken without hesitation. The prescription uses Sichuan pepper (Chuan Hu Jiao), prepared ginger (Pao Jiang), and cinnamon twig (Rou Gui), each 1 qian; and cloves (Ding Xiang), 10 grains. These four ingredients are ground into a fine powder. Three liang of kitchen hearth earth (Zao Xin Tu) is boiled in water, the clear liquid is decanted, and the medicine is decocted in this liquid until about half a teacup remains. Administer frequently by force-feeding. Follow up with the subsequent formula for miraculous effects.
Jiawei Lizhong Dihuang Tang (Modified Lizhong and Rehmannia Decoction): This formula tonifies qi and blood, eliminates disease, and restores yang. It is specifically indicated for children with depleted spirit, severely damaged qi and blood, and extreme emaciation and debility. These conditions can all be reversed using this method. Decoct strongly according to instructions and administer frequently. Its ability to save the root like towering trees is hard to fully describe. The prescription uses prepared rehmannia root (Shu Di Huang), 5 qian; fried white atractylodes rhizome (Jiao Zhu), 3 qian; codonopsis root (Dang Shen), angelica sinensis root (Dang Gui), honey-fried astragalus root (Zhi Qi), stir-fried and ground psoralea fruit (Gu Zhi Chao Yan), ziziphus seed (Zao Ren), and goji berry (Gou Qi), each 3 qian; prepared ginger (Pao Jiang), cornus officinalis fruit (Zhu Yu Rou), honey-fried licorice root (Zhi Cao), and cinnamon twig (Rou Gui), each 1 qian; add fresh ginger slices (Sheng Jiang), 2 pieces; red dates (Hong Zao), 3 pieces; and walnuts (Hu Tao), 2 nuts crushed, as guides. Still use two liang of kitchen hearth earth (Zao Xin Tu) boiled in water to decoct the medicine, obtaining one teacup of concentrated juice. Add five fen of prepared aconite root (Fu Zi) decocted in water and mix well. Administer in divided doses based on the child's age. If coughing occurs, add one qian of chimonobalanus fruit (Jin Ying Zi); if high fever persists, add one qian of white peony root (Bai Shao); if diarrhea continues, add six fen of cloves (Ding Xiang); if urinary retention occurs, add one qian of prepared aconite root (Fu Zi). The divine application lies with the practitioner and cannot be fully narrated.
142. Acute Jing Syndrome: The symptoms of acute jing include body heat with flushed complexion, limb convulsions, upward deviation of the eyes, locked jaw, hot breath from mouth and nose, surging phlegm and saliva, and sudden onset of tidal fever. After the episode, the complexion returns to normal. Some cases occur occasionally due to fright, while others do not, but most involve prior body heat preceding the convulsions. There are no cases where convulsions occur with a cool body; this is a yang syndrome. Generally, heat generates phlegm, and excessive phlegm generates jing and wind. It is appropriate to use cooling agents to clear heat and transform phlegm, thereby eliminating jing-wind. One must absolutely avoid using acrid-dry wind-dispersing drugs, as they will exacerbate heart fire and cause severe convulsions. The patient should only be supported and protected, not forcibly restrained, to prevent wind-phlegm from entering the collaterals and causing limb contracture. One must not panic and arbitrarily use moxibustion or burning lamps. Nor should harsh purgatives like croton seed (Ba Dou) or calomel (Qing Fen) be used, as this would accelerate danger. In cases of smallpox where fever occurs before spots appear, followed suddenly by convulsions resembling acute jing, careful differentiation is required to avoid errors. The following five verified formulas are listed sequentially for treatment.
Qingre Zhenjing Tang (Heat-Clearing and Tremor-Calming Decoction): Suitable for the initial stage of acute jing. If phlegm-heat remains after administration, select one of the subsequent formulas; after two bowel movements, recovery will occur. If this formula is effective, subsequent formulas are unnecessary. The prescription uses Forsythia fruit (Lian Qiao, de-heartened and ground), Bupleurum root (Chai Hu), ground cherry bark (Di Gu Pi), Gentian root (Long Dan Cao), Uncaria rhynchophylla (Gou Teng), Gardenia seed (Zhi Ren), Coptis rhizome (Huang Lian), Scutellaria root (Huang Qin), Ophiopogon tuber (Mai Dong), Akebia stem (Mu Tong), Poria sclerotium (Chi Ling, peeled), fried Plantago seed (Che Qian Zi), Immature bitter orange (Zhi Shi), each 4 fen; Mint herb (Bo He), 2 fen; Talcum powder (Hua Shi Mo), 8 fen; Juncus effusus (Deng Xin), one cluster; Light bamboo leaves (Dan Zhu Ye), 1 qian. Decoct in water and administer in divided doses.
Jiajian Liangge San (Modified Cooling Diaphragm Powder): Forsythia fruit (Lian Qiao), wine-processed Scutellaria root (Jiu Ku Qin), black Gardenia fruit (Hei Shan Zhi), fried Immature bitter orange (Chao Zhi Shi), Peucedanum root (Qian Hu), each 5 fen; wine-processed Rhubarb (Jiu Chao Da Huang), 1 qian; Mint herb (Bo He), Licorice root (Gan Cao), each 2 fen. Decoct in water and administer in divided doses. After one or two bowel movements, phlegm-heat subsides; if already purged, do not take further.
Xuanfeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder): Tangerine peel powder (Chen Pi Mo), Areca seed powder (Bing Lang Mo), each 5 qian; Licorice root powder (Gan Cao Mo), 2.5 qian. Mix evenly. For children under one year, take 3 fen; over two years, 5 fen; over five years, 7 fen. All taken mixed with honey water. Mild purgation once or twice yields subtle results. If already purged, do not take further. For severe phlegm, add Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill), Baolong Wan (Embracing Dragon Pill), or Yiyuan San (Benefit Origin Powder), all extremely effective. This comes from *Huoyou Xinshu* (New Book for Living Infants).
Xia's Tianbao Caiwei Tang (Xia's Tianbao Caiwei Decoction): Specifically treats acute jing with excellent effect. Notopterygium root (Qiang Huo), Angelica pubescens root (Du Huo), Atractylodes lancea rhizome (Cang Zhu), Peucedanum root (Qian Hu), Cimicifuga rhizome (Sheng Ma), Kudzu root (Ge Gen), Tangerine peel (Chen Pi), Magnolia bark (Hou Po), Licorice root (Gan Cao), Scutellaria root (Huang Qin), Ligusticum rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Bupleurum root (Chai Hu), Platycodon root (Jie Geng), Pinellia tuber (Ban Xia), Immature bitter orange (Zhi Ke), Agastache herb (Huo Xiang), Peony root (Shao Yao), each 5 fen. Use fresh ginger and red dates as guides, decoct in water and take.
Kaiguanfu Tang (Open Coffin Axe Decoction): Specifically treats acute jing. Though seemingly ordinary, its action is very rapid. Even if the child appears dead, it can revive them, hence the name Open Coffin Axe. The prescription uses twelve Longan shells (Long Yan Ke, preferably chestnut-colored, avoid deep yellow, also known as Pao Yuan), Fine tea (Xi Cha), 3 qian; Tangerine peel (Chen Pi), 3 qian; Ginger skin (Jiang Pi), 3 fen; White salt (Bai Yan), 3 fen. Decoct in one bowl of water until reduced to 0.6 bowls, and pour into the mouth. If the child shudders suddenly, they will survive. Truly a miraculous formula. Alternatively, use one pill of genuine Huoluo Wan (Activate Collaterals Pill) from the old Chen Li Ji shop near Weisi Archway, South Gate, Guangzhou City. The child will sleep peacefully immediately; take two more pills for complete recovery.
External Treatment Good Formula: Use six sweet almonds (Tian Xing Ren), six cardamom seeds (Sha Ren), seven gardenia fruits (Huang Zhi Zi). Grind these medicines into a paste, add rice wine (Shao Jiu), egg white (Ji Dan Qing), and plain flour (Bai Gan Mian). Form pills the size of tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) according to the child's age. Apply to the palms of hands and soles of feet. Tie tightly with cloth strips for one week. If both palms and soles turn blue-green, the disease is removed. Remember: males apply to the left hand, females to the right hand; do not mistake this. This is crucial, universally effective, and truly has the power to bring back the dead.
243. Ge Qi (Qi Stagnation): Mu Tianqi's mother suffered from Ge Qi and was cured by a formula taught by an unusual person. The prescription uses Rhubarb (Da Huang), 2 liang (prepared nine times with wine); Top-grade Agarwood powder (Shang Chen Xiang Mo), 6 qian; Soaked Peach kernel (Pao Tao Ren, peeled, core removed, oil removed, ground), 6 qian; Lindera root (Wu Yao), 1 liang (boiled and stir-fried with salt water); Borax (Peng Sha), 2 qian. Grind together into a fine powder. Take only 2.5 fen per dose, swallowing with saliva from the tongue. Miraculous effect.
244. Chong Gu (Parasitic Distension): Symptoms of parasitic distension include lower abdominal pain, mild edema of the four limbs, red complexion with white spots resembling insect bites. This is called Chong Gu. The prescription uses Xiao Chong Shenqi Dan (Miraculous Parasite-Eliminating Divine Pill): Angelica sinensis root (Dang Gui), Soft-shelled turtle shell (Bie Jia), Water chestnut powder (Di Li Fen), each 1 liang; Omphalia fungus (Lei Wan), Fermented wheat mass (Shen Qu), Poria sclerotium (Fu Ling), Alum (Bai Fan), each 3 qian; Plantago seed (Che Qian Zi), 5 qian. Decoct in water and take. One dose expels countless parasites; two doses eliminate all parasites and reduce distension. However, after recovery, it is essential to regulate with Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) minus Licorice root.
245. Luoli Ruyan (Scrofula and Breast Cancer): Xiaohe Gao (Nodule-Dissolving Paste) specifically treats scrofula and breast cancer. Applied externally, it resolves internally and externally with remarkable efficacy. The prescription uses Prepared Kansui root (Zhi Gan Sui), 2 liang; Red-bud Dandelion root (Hong Ya Da Ji), 2 liang; White mustard seed (Bai Jie Zi), 8 qian; Raw Arisaema corm (Sheng Nan Xing), 1.5 liang; Ephedra herb (Ma Huang), 4 qian; Ginger-processed Pinellia tuber (Jiang Zhi Xia), 1.5 liang; Silkworm (Jiang Can), 1.5 liang; Guttiferone (Teng Huang), 1.5 liang; Mirabilite (Pu Xiao), 1.5 liang. Use one jin of sesame oil. First, add Kansui, Arisaema, and Pinellia; boil until charred and remove. Second, add Silkworm. Third, add Dandelion root and Ephedra. Fourth, add White mustard seed and Guttiferone; boil until charred and remove sequentially. Sixth, add Mirabilite; boil until it no longer pops. Filter the oil through silk. Boil again in the pot, slowly add roasted Yellow Lead Oxide (Huang Dan), stirring continuously. The amount of lead oxide depends on the desired consistency. Once the paste is formed, pull and stretch it in water dozens of times to remove fire toxicity. Then apply. Apply thickly, not thinly. The brilliance of this paste lies in not using toxic or harsh drugs. It causes no damage even applied to healthy flesh.
Dazao Wan (Jujube Pill): Treats scrofula that has ulcerated revealing fascia. Extremely effective when taken. The prescription uses goat dung stir-fried until carbonized (preserving nature). For long-standing ulcers about to expose internal organs, take jujubes, remove skin and pits, grind into mud, then mix in appropriate amounts of goat dung ash and grind into pills. Take 4 qian per dose, washed down with black jujube soup.
Shalian San (Mountain Lotus Powder): Essential medicine for hand abscesses and scrofula, suitable for various toxic sores that have ulcerated badly but remain confined to the diaphragm without reaching internal organs. Applying it yields immediate miraculous results. The prescription uses goat dung, 2 liang; large live crucian carp, 1 tail; Musk (She Xiang), 1 qian. Gut the carp, fill the belly with goat dung. Roast dry on a tile over slow fire until carbonized. Grind into powder, add musk, and grind again. Store carefully to prevent gas leakage. For badly ulcerated scrofula, sprinkle this powder into the wound, cover externally with Yanghe Jiening Gao (Warm and Resolve Congealing Paste).
246. Qi Gu (Qi Distension): This condition involves swelling due to qi deficiency, appearing like water edema but actually not water. Pressing does not leave a pit like mud. However, it necessarily starts with swelling from the feet upwards to the body, head, and face. This is called Qi Distension. Treatment should focus on strengthening the spleen and moving qi, adding a little water-draining material. If mistakenly treated as water distension, it accelerates death. The prescription uses Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Bai Zhu), Poria sclerotium (Fu Ling), Coix seed (Yi Ren), each 1 liang; Licorice root (Gan Cao), 1 fen; Cinnamon twig (Rou Gui), 1 fen; Immature bitter orange (Zhi Ke), 5 fen; Ginseng (Ren Shen), Fermented wheat mass (Shen Qu), Plantago seed (Che Qian Zi), Radish seed (Luo Bo Zi), each 1 qian; Chinese yam (Shan Yao), 5 qian. Decoct in water and take. If feeling obstructed initially, thirty doses will achieve success. Avoid salt and Qishi (lithium salts).
247. Shui Gu (Water Distension): This condition involves whole-body edema; pressing leaves a pit like mud. If not treated urgently, fluid flowing to the limbs cannot exit via the bladder, leading to death. The prescription uses Jueliu Tang (Drain Flow Decoction): Black Morning Glory seed (Hei Qian Niu), 2 qian; Kansui root (Gan Sui), 2 qian; Cinnamon twig (Rou Gui), 3 fen; Plantago seed (Che Qian Zi), 1 liang. Decoct in water and take. Two doses cure.
