Mr. Qiu Haochuan from Nanhai developed the method of cowpox vaccination, which was transmitted from the West to China. Its clinical efficacy is undeniable and cannot be fully enumerated. I had heard of this technique in the past but regretted not having seen the relevant texts. In the year Wuzi (1828), while studying at Lushan Mountain with my books, I finally obtained this book from Mr. Wu Baoyuan and presented it to Master Ouyang Tanzhai. The master approved of it, prompting my fellow students to enthusiastically pool funds to have it woodblock printed for wider dissemination. The original text included poems and comments from various prominent figures, totaling several thousand characters, all praising its wonders by those who had personally benefited. Due to the excessive length, we could not include them all; instead, we published only the diagrams and methods. I believe that the world has long suffered from smallpox. The traditional nasal inoculation method often yielded mixed results. This book, however, offers a foolproof approach, turning difficulty into ease and danger into safety. It truly unveils ancient mysteries, bringing infants of the era into the realm of benevolence and longevity. It is hoped that those who cherish children will follow and practice this method. Recorded by Zhou Jingming, courtesy name Chuntai, of Hengshan, at the Juye Studio of Yuelu Academy, on the 16th day of the seventh month in the eighth year of Daoguang (Wuzi year).
The discipline of treating pox has been passed down for a long time. Historically, the nasal seedling method was used, where pathogens were believed to travel from the Lung to the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney, attacking each other, then reversely transmitting to the Mingmen (Gate of Life) to expel congenital latent toxins. Because the toxins were expelled via reverse attack, their eruption sites were unpredictable. If complications such as "covering the head," "locking the neck," or "encircling the waist" occurred, leading to numerous adverse changes, improper treatment made every situation perilous. Recently, a new Western method using lymphatic material has been introduced, applied to both arms. Since the acupoints on the arms belong to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao (Triple Burner) meridian, the lymph material transmits from Shaoyang to the Gallbladder, guiding each other, and smoothly transmits to the Mingmen to draw out congenital latent toxins. The toxins are expelled along this smooth path, erupting on the arms, progressing daily through stages of fluid appearance, pustule formation, and scabbing. Thus, symptoms are uncomplicated, and efficacy is achieved with little effort, ensuring everyone remains stable as a rock. This is indeed an excellent method for the absolute protection of infants. As this method spreads in China, more people are learning and practicing it. Having studied this field for years, I have gained some understanding. Upon carefully examining the book *Yin Dou Lue* (Brief Treatise on Inducing Pox), I found its content obscure and unclear. Although Master Qiu originally drew diagrams for inoculation points, indicating what should be done, he did not thoroughly explain why. Consequently, later practitioners adopted inconsistent point-selection methods, inevitably leading to errors. However, the key to this discipline lies in accurately identifying acupoints. Without the correct method for assessing points, how can one practice without error? According to the copper man acupuncture model commissioned by the Song Dynasty emperor, the acupoints in the Mingtang diagram possess immutable principles. These principles should not be feigned if unknown, nor should they be kept secret from public knowledge. Therefore, strictly following the *Zhenjiu Dacheng* (Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) and the *Yuzuan Yizong Jinjian* (Imperially Compiled Golden Mirror of the Medical Tradition), I have compiled the proportional inch method (*Tongshenchun*) and engraved the front and back views of the copper man diagram below. This allows those interested in this field to understand the differentiation of Zang-Fu organs by viewing the diagrams and locate acupoints according to meridians. By distinguishing what ought to be done and deeply investigating the underlying reasons, one can trace the meridians, assess acupoints accurately, and apply inoculation techniques correctly, avoiding even slight errors. This not only demonstrates my commendable mastery of the technique but also represents a great merit in preserving infant lives. Is this not a source of deep joy for me?
