Whenever measles appear, if all five fluids (sweat, excretion, nasal discharge, vomit, and tears) are present, it is a favorable condition. If only two or three types of fluids are absent, it is an unfavorable condition. If none of the five fluids are present, it is a fatal condition. Sweat is the fluid of the Heart, excretion is the fluid of the Kidney, nasal discharge is the fluid of the Lung, vomit is the fluid of the Spleen, and tears are the fluid of the Liver. This is because measles originate in the Yang aspect, where fire-toxic heat blazes; the five fluids belong to Water, and Water can control Fire, thus the condition is relatively mild. If stool is constipated, it indicates exhaustion of Kidney fluids; if the whole body is dry, it indicates depletion of Heart fluids; if there is nasal flaring without nasal discharge, it indicates deficiency of Lung fluids; if there are no eye discharges or tears, it indicates scarcity of Liver fluids; if there is dry retching without anything coming up, it indicates dryness of Spleen fluids. Deficiency of the five fluids will inevitably lead to residual toxicity after the rash erupts. Absence of Kidney fluids leads to dysentery; absence of Heart fluids leads to fever; absence of Lung fluids leads to cough; absence of Liver fluids leads to corneal opacity (pterygium); absence of Spleen fluids leads to noma (gangrenous stomatitis).
The Heart governs sweat. Whenever measles have erupted or not yet fully erupted, accompanied by nasal flaring, cyanotic face, and panting, this indicates pathogenic toxic heat invading the Lung, causing the lung lobes to expand. Urgently administer Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) to induce sweating. Fumigating and washing with decoction of Willow branches is most excellent. Alternatively, take one handful of fresh Scallion White and one handful of Coriander, boil for five to seven times, remove from heat, let cool slightly, wash the infant's forehead, Taiyang acupoints, and cheeks first, then hands and feet. Finally, apply the dregs as a compress, alternating hot and cold. Do not make the warming too hot to avoid injuring the infant's skin. Alternatively, use four liang of Coriander and eight liang of fermented grain residue, applying the decoction method and rubbing method as before. Or use cotton gauze of any amount, boil in water, fumigate while hot, then wash, followed by scraping similar to Gua Sha therapy. Areas such as the temple corners, Tianting point, head and neck, waist, and back can be scraped until red, then washed again, and frequently drink this soup to induce sweating.
The Liver governs tears. Use Gleditsia Sinensis powder insufflated into the nose to induce tearing, making the infant cry.
The Spleen governs vomiting. Use fresh shrimp soup or Scallion White soup to induce vomiting.
The Lung governs nasal discharge. Use Gleditsia Sinensis powder insufflated into the nose to induce sneezing.
The Kidney governs excretion. Use shrimp soup or bamboo shoot soup to induce diarrhea.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Ziye (Perilla Leaf), Bohe (Mint), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Gan Ge (Kudzu Root), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Guya (Barley Sprout), Gancao (Licorice Root), Congbai (Scallion White) seven stalks, Dengxin (Juncus Maritimus Pith) one pellet.
Formula for the First Day of Rash Appearance: Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Bohe (Mint), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Nanzi (Lepidii Semen), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Guya (Barley Sprout), Dengxin (Juncus Maritimus Pith) one pellet. On the day of rash appearance, when the measles spots are hidden within the skin, Mahuang (Ephedra Herba) should be used. If the tongue coating is white and there is bad breath, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) must definitely be used to clear Stomach fire, allowing the measles to naturally emerge. One must not refrain from using Shigao due to its cold nature harming the Stomach. If one sees a white tongue coating and mistakenly considers it cold damaging the Stomach, refusing to boldly use Shigao, the Stomach fire cannot be cleared. Not only will the measles fail to emerge quickly, but immediately there will be risks of nasal flaring, chest fullness, and coarse breathing. Later, there will be dangers of noma, oral ulcers, eye pain, and red eyes. The root cause is unclarified Stomach fire blazing upward to the mouth and teeth, which belong to the Stomach. It also blazes upward to the eyes, as the Stomach meridian originates at the inner canthus of the eye, so Stomach fire travels along its own channel. Families of wealth often consume rich and sweet foods; upon seeing a white tongue coating and bad breath, heavy doses of Shigao are required. For poor families who do not eat sweet foods, if Stomach fire attacks the teeth, the teeth cannot withstand it; if it attacks the eyes, the eyes cannot withstand it. With nowhere to vent, the Stomach fire rises directly to the crown of the head, causing redness, swelling, and elevation of more than one cun. Even if treatment for over a month fails, large doses of Shigao should still be used, combined with Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) as clearing fire and defeating toxins drugs, plus Lu Jiao Xie (Deer Antler Shavings). Since the deer's energy operates through its horns, reaching the crown, this combination is effective.
Formula for the Second and Third Days of Rash Appearance: Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Bohe (Mint), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Nanzi (Lepidii Semen), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Gancao (Licorice Root), Guya (Barley Sprout), Dengxin (Juncus Maritimus Pith) one pellet. If spots do not emerge, continue using Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome); if hidden in the skin, use Mahuang (Ephedra Herba); if spots become dark purple, dry, and withered, use Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn), Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen), and Madouling (Aristolochiae Fructus). For phlegm-fire, use Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) and Xingren (Prunus Seed).
Formula for the Third and Fourth Days of Rash Appearance: Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chantui (Cicada Slough), Nanzi (Lepidii Semen), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus). Add Pipaye (Loquat Leaf) for cough, de-haired and honey-fried. For white tongue coating and bad breath, use Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) with fried glutinous rice. Shigao is cold and harms the Stomach, while glutinous rice warms the Stomach, balancing each other. Some use Shigao combined with Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) to raise Yang and dissipate. For red tongue tip, use Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus). For food stagnation, use Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Luobozhongzi (Raphani Semen). For phlegm, use Chuanbei (Fritillariae Bulbus), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), and Xingren (Prunus Seed). For coarse breathing, use Suzi (Perillae Fructus).
Formula for the Fourth and Fifth Days of Rash Appearance: Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Gen Sheng (Root produced raw - *Note: likely refers to specific preparation*), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Sangpi (Mori Cortex), Xingren (Prunus Seed). Adjust according to symptoms as described previously.
Formula for the Sixth and Seventh Days of Rash Appearance: In ancient times, during measles eruption, the rash would surge twice between Zi and Wu hours, subsiding within three days, requiring no medication. Recently, however, it may persist for five to seven days without subsiding, with high fever resembling macular typhoid. This is due to incomplete clearance of fire-toxic heat and uncleared exterior and interior. Use Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Bohe (Mint), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus). Adjust according to symptoms as described previously.
