May Induce Sweating
If the pulse is floating and large, sweating may be induced (if the patient reports diarrhea, it indicates deficiency, and sweating should not be induced). If the pulse is floating and tight, sweating may be induced.
In Taiyang disease, if the pulse is floating, weak, and rapid, sweating may be induced.
In Yangming disease, if the pulse is slow, there is profuse sweating, slight aversion to cold, and the exterior syndrome is unresolved, sweating may be induced.
If there is fever in the late afternoon resembling malaria, this belongs to Yangming; if the pulse is floating and deficient, sweating may be induced.
After diarrhea, if there is body pain but bowel movements are normal, sweating may be induced.
May Not Induce Sweating
If the pulse is deep and fine (indicating interior pathology), sweating may not be induced.
If the pulse is soft and weak (indicating Qi and Blood deficiency), sweating may not be induced.
If the pulse is floating and tight, body pain is expected, and sweating should theoretically resolve it; however, if the Chi position pulse is slow, sweating may not be induced. A slow Chi pulse indicates blood deficiency.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage) with Wind-Warmth or Damp-Warmth syndromes, sweating is contraindicated; see the Shanghan category for details.
In Shanghan, if there is headache resembling Zhongfeng (Wind Strike), frequent slight sweating, and spontaneous vomiting with mental restlessness, inducing sweating will lead to spasms.
In Shanghan, if the pulse is wiry and thin, with headache and contrary fever, this belongs to Shaoyang; sweating may not be induced.
In concurrent Taiyang and Shaoyang diseases, with stiffness and pain of the head and neck, or dizziness, and fullness/hardness below the heart, sweating may not be induced.
In Shaoyin disease, if there is cough, diarrhea, and delirium, this is due to forced sweating.
If Qi movement is chaotic affecting all directions, sweating may not be induced.
If there is a sensation of cold obstruction in the throat, sweating may not be induced; inducing sweating will cause hematemesis.
Patients who have lost blood may not induce sweating; doing so leads to deficiency and tremors.
In Jue (Cold Extremities) conditions, sweating may not be induced; doing so causes voice disorder and hoarseness.
In cases of epistaxis (nosebleed), sweating may not be induced; doing so causes deafness and fixed gaze.
In mouth ulcers, sweating may not be induced; doing so leads to [text missing].
In Lin syndrome (dysuria), sweating may not be induced; doing so causes hematochezia.
Inducing sweating in winter leads to vomiting and diarrhea. Patients prone to sweating should not be heavily sweated again; doing so leads to mental confusion, and a short pulse indicates death. In cases of diarrhea with undigested food, sweating may not be induced; doing so leads to abdominal distension.
If there is cough and free urination, sweating may not be induced; doing so leads to cold extremities.
In severe reversal conditions where sweating has been induced excessively, leading to disordered speech and vertigo, death ensues.
May Induce Vomiting
If the Cun position pulse is micro and fine, with chest oppression and hardness, and Qi rushing up to the throat causing breathing difficulty, this indicates Cold-Phlegm in the chest; vomiting may be induced.
If pathogenic excess is in the upper chest, with郁 (stagnant) pain, inability to eat, desire for pressure on the chest, yet spitting turbid saliva, accompanied by diarrhea more than ten times a day, with a contrary slow pulse and slightly slippery Cun pulse, vomiting may be induced.
If the patient has cold extremities, sudden tight pulse, pathogenic factor knotting in the chest, fullness and irritability below the heart, hunger but inability to eat, vomiting may be induced.
In Shanghan, if the pulse is floating and slippery, vomiting may be induced.
In miscellaneous diseases, if the pulse is deep, vomiting may be induced.
May Not Induce Vomiting
In all cases of Si Ni (Four Reversals/Cold Extremities), vomiting may not be induced.
In deficient constitutions, vomiting may not be induced.
If there is Cold-Fluid retention above the chest and diaphragm with dry retching, vomiting may not be induced; the treatment method should be warming.
May Purge
If the pulse is slippery and rapid, indicating retained food, purging may be induced.
If the pulse is double-wiry and slow, with hardness below the heart; or if the pulse is large and tight, indicating Yin within Yang, purging may be induced.
In diarrhea, if the three positions of the pulse are level, but pressing below the heart reveals hardness, purging may be induced.
After Shanghan, if the pulse is deep indicating interior excess, purging may be induced.
If there are no exterior or interior signs, but fever persists for seven to eight days, even if the pulse is floating and rapid, purging may be induced.
In Shanghan with heat and lower abdominal fullness, urination should be difficult; if it is actually free, this indicates Blood Stasis, and purging may be induced.
In Shanghan after six or seven days, if there is real Heat in Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) with a deep-tight pulse, pain below the heart, and hardness like stone upon pressure, purging may be induced.
In Taiyang Wind Strike with diarrhea and vomiting/reversal, if the exterior is resolved with sweating, attacks occur at specific times, with headache and fullness/hardness below the heart, purging may be induced.
If Taiyang disease is unresolved, Heat knots in the Bladder, the patient appears manic, and blood passes spontaneously, purging may be induced.
In Yangming syndrome, forgetfulness indicates Blood Stasis; although stool is hard, it will be black, and purging may be induced.
In Yangming syndrome, fever and sweating usually resolve it; if it recurs like malaria with afternoon fever and a solid pulse, purging may be induced.
In Yangming syndrome, if there is delirium and tidal fever, yet inability to eat, indicating Dry Feces, purging may be induced; if the pulse is slippery and solid, purging may be induced.
In Yangming syndrome, if there is fever and profuse sweating, urgent purging is required.
If there is no urge to vomit but mental irritation, purging may be induced.
In concurrent Er Yang (Taiyang and Yangming) diseases, if Taiyang symptoms cease, only tidal fever remains, with sweating on hands and feet, difficult defecation, and delirium, purging may be induced.
In Shaoyin disease, if after two or three days there is dry mouth and throat, urgent purging is required; if after six or seven days there is abdominal fullness and constipation, purging may be induced.
In Shaoyin disease, if there is diarrhea with clear green water, pain below the heart, and dry mouth, purging may be induced.
May Not Purge
If the pulse is soft and weak, indicating Qi and Blood deficiency, purging may not be induced.
If the pulse is floating and large, indicating Qi and Blood deficiency, purging may not be induced.
If the Chi pulse is weak and choppy, purging may not be induced.
If the Duyang pulse is floating and rapid (floating injures Stomach, rapid agitates Spleen; this is iatrogenic from previous purging), in all exterior excess conditions, purging may not be induced; purging leads to slight fever, and pulse disappearance leads to cold extremities.
In all deficiency conditions, purging may not be induced; if purged and the patient thirsts for water, recovery is likely; if they hate water, the condition worsens. Abdominal pulsations (Dong Qi) contraindicate purging.
Throat obstruction contraindicates purging; purging leads to upper lightness/lower heaviness, inability to swallow fluids, body pain, and abdominal diarrhea. In Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) with a floating-large pulse, purging is contraindicated; purging leads to death.
In concurrent Taiyang and Yangming diseases with wheezing and chest fullness, purging is contraindicated.
In concurrent Taiyang and Shaoyang diseases with fullness/hardness below the heart, neck stiffness, and vertigo, purging is contraindicated.
In Taiyang disease, if exterior signs are unresolved or Yang heat is excessive, purging is contraindicated.
In Taiyin disease with abdominal fullness, vomiting, and inability to eat, purging worsens the condition.
In Jueyin disease with thirst, Qi rushing upward, heart pain/heat, hunger but no appetite, aggressive purging causes uncontrollable diarrhea.
In Shaoyin disease with vomiting after eating, wiry-slow pulse, and chest cold, purging is contraindicated.
In Yangming syndrome, if there is tidal fever and Dry Feces, purging is indicated; if stool is not hard, purging is contraindicated.
In Yangming disease, if the body is reddish, purging is contraindicated; it leads to fever, jaundice, and dysuria. In Yangming disease, if there is hardness/fullness below the heart, attacking with purgatives leads to death if diarrhea is uncontrolled, or recovery if it stops.
In Yangming disease, if there is spontaneous thirst, sweating, and free urination, indicating internal depletion, even if stool is hard, attacking with purgatives is contraindicated; guiding methods (suppositories/enemas) are suitable.
In Shanghan after five or six days, without Jie Xiong, with a deficient pulse and cold extremities, purging is contraindicated; purging leads to blood loss and death.
In Shanghan with frequent vomiting, even with Yangming symptoms, attacking with purgatives is contraindicated.
In Zang Jie (Organ Knotting) without Yang signs, cold without heat, quiet demeanor, and slippery tongue coating, purging is contraindicated.
In all cases of Si Ni (Cold Extremities), purging is contraindicated.
If the patient desires to vomit, purging is contraindicated.
In diarrhea with a floating-large pulse, it indicates deficiency caused by forced purging. If the pulse is floating-leather-like with borborygmus, it belongs to Danggui Sini Decoction.
May Apply Warming Methods
If there is fever, headache, contrary deep pulse, and increased body pain, warming methods are appropriate.
In diarrhea with body pain and abdominal fullness, warming methods are appropriate. If the pulse is slow-tight, indicating persistent pain, warming methods are appropriate.
In Shaoyin disease with a deep pulse, warming methods are appropriate.
In Shaoyin diarrhea with micro-choppy pulse, vomiting, sweating, frequent urination with small volume, warming methods are appropriate.
Spontaneous diarrhea without thirst belongs to Taiyin; internal cold warrants warming methods.
In diarrhea with appetite, warming methods are appropriate.
May Not Apply Warming Methods

May Administer Water
After Taiyang disease sweating, if heavy sweating occurs, causing dry stomach, irritability, insomnia, and thirst, giving small amounts of water cures it.
In Jueyin disease, if thirsty for water, give small amounts; Wuling San is suitable.
In Huoluan (Cholera-like illness) with headache, fever, body pain, excess heat, and thirst, Wuling San is indicated.
In vomiting with pathology above the diaphragm, followed by thirst, give water urgently; Wuling San is suitable.
May Not Administer Water
After sweating, drinking too much water causes wheezing; bathing with water causes the same.
After severe vomiting/purging leading to extreme deficiency, combined with heavy sweating, giving water causes hiccups; this is due to Stomach deficiency-cold.
May Apply Fire Therapy
(Text empty)
May Not Apply Fire Therapy
In Taiyang Wind Strike, whether the pathogen is in the exterior or the pulse is floating, fire therapy is contraindicated. Using fire to force sweating causes two heats to clash, depleting Body Fluids.
May Apply Moxibustion
In Shaoyin disease, after one or two days, if the mouth is comfortable but the back feels cold, moxibustion is suitable.
In Shaoyin vomiting/diarrhea, if extremities are not cold but warm, and pulse is absent, moxibustion is suitable.
In Shaoyin Shanghan after six or seven days, with micro pulse, cold extremities, and irritability, moxibustion is suitable. If cold extremities do not return, death ensues.
In Shanghan with hurried pulse and cold extremities, moxibustion is suitable; Shaoyin and Jueyin govern reversal conditions.
In various diarrheas with cold extremities and absent pulse, moxibustion is suitable. If warming does not occur and slight wheezing develops, death ensues. Points: Dadun (LR1), Yinlingquan (SP9), Shangqiu (SP5).
May Not Apply Moxibustion
A micro-rapid pulse contraindicates moxibustion, as fire becomes a pathogen.
A floating pulse requires sweating; moxibustion is contraindicated as fire exacerbates the condition.
