Most cases belong to the Lung meridian. Another version states: specifically treating Lung meridian pathologies. A man who was fond of drinking alcohol, after being exposed to wind-cold with insufficient clothing, felt fatigued and had no appetite for half a month. Upon sleeping, he suddenly developed high fever, body pain as if beaten by a club, and slight aversion to cold. At dawn, examination revealed floating and large pulses in all six positions, which were empty upon deep pressure, more pronounced on the left side. Diagnosed as extreme deficiency combined with wind-cold invasion, treatment proceeded accordingly. Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) served as the Sovereign herb, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) as Ministers, Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) as Assistants and Guides. After five doses, profuse sweating occurred like rain, requiring three bed sheet changes; upon waking, all symptoms resolved.
Referred to as Wen Bing (Warm Disease) or common illness, one specific type is called Tian Xing Shi Yi (Epidemic Disease). There are three treatment principles: tonification, dispersion, and descending. Formula: Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Hua Shi (Talcum), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Ren Zhong Huang (Human Manure Processed), ground into powder, formed into pills with Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven), taken 50-70 pills per dose. Prepare decoctions based on Qi, Blood, or Phlegm differentiation. For Qi deficiency, use Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction); for Blood deficiency, use Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction); for excessive Phlegm, administer with Er Chen Tang (Two Aged Decoction); for severe heat, use Tong Bian (Child's Urine). Another formula for seasonal diseases: Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), each 0.5 qian; Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), each 1 qian; Gan Cao (Licorice Radix) 1 qian; Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 1.5 qian. Decoct together as one dose. Add Jiu Huang Qin (Wine-processed Scutellariae Radix) for headache; add Gan Ge (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) for thirst; add Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) for body pain. One formula treats Wen Bing (Warm Disease), also effective for food stagnation, Phlegm-Heat, and descending Yin Fire, using Ren Zhong Huang (Human Manure Processed) rice pills, 15 pills per dose. For epidemic diseases, differentiate internal and external factors. Those entering from outside present with headache, body pain, aversion to wind and cold, preference for warmth, and sinking-rapid pulses. If the pathology is upper, recovery requires profuse sweating, regardless of disease duration. Use Liu Shen Tong Jie San (Six Miracles Freeing Release Powder): Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) 1.5 qian; Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix), each 1 qian; Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Hua Shi (Talcum), each 2 qian. Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Cong Tou (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), take hot. If delirium and restlessness occur due to Heat Evil in the interior not fully resolved by sweating, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) for relief. Liu Shen Tong Jie San (Six Miracles Freeing Release Powder) was created by Zhang Dai Ren. Although the herbs are mild, people often overlook it, unaware of its subtlety. If sweating is not achieved, add Zi Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Gan Ge (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) to enhance dispersion; once sweating occurs, the disease clears rapidly. Shang Han (Cold Damage) caused by labor and excessive cold-dampness leads to heat without appetite, followed days later by unconsciousness, confused speech, coma, cyanotic face, and exposed teeth, considered fatal. Pulses are sinking and fine. If Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) fails, urgently use Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentiments Decoction) with processed Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) slices cooled in water to remove heat properties, then administer warm. Pulse and consciousness return, allowing other treatments; this is Yin Syndrome Cold Damage. Shang Han (Cold Damage) with stagnation unresolved, merging Three Yang into Three Yin, causing organ dryness, red face, thirst, palpitations, delirium, internal heat predominating over external, requires interior resolution. Use San Yi Cheng Qi Tang (Three Ones Purge Down Decoction) to purge dry stool; or Mu Lan Bing Lang Wan (Magnolia Bark and Areca Seed Pill), two doses swallowed; or add Xuan Ming Fen (Mirabilite) 1 qian. If purgatives or diaphoretics fail to reduce heat, use Zhi Zi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Soybean Decoction) modified; or Liang Ge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder) modified. For simultaneous exterior-interior non-resolution, use Gua Di San (Melon Spitter Powder) to induce vomiting of phlegm, leading to sweating and expulsion of pathogens. When Shang Han (Cold Damage) transmits to Yin meridians or Heat merges into organs causing urgent dysentery, use harmonizing agents like Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium); for urgency, use Wei Rou Dou Kou (Arecae Semen Preparatum) and Chao Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven Prepared), adjusting as needed; after dysentery stops, clear residual heat with medication. Where Evil gathers, Qi must be deficient. For internal injury, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) plus Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix); add Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) for severe heat. For Shang Han (Cold Damage) with high fever, solid pulse, and mania, indicating excess syndrome, use Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction). A patient with prior internal injury developed delirium after sweating and purging; initially recognizable, but within 3-5 days, speech became increasingly erratic, indicating Spirit not residing in its house. Do not attack; pulses are likely fine-rapid, insomnia, cold feet, shortness of breath, brownish-cyan face, dry mouth. Use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 0.5 liang, Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium) 30 leaves, decocted for efficacy. A patient with internal weakness, contracted through labor, became severely deficient after sweating and purging; pulses fine-rapid, heat like moxa, shortness of breath. Use Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), decocted with water and Tong Bian (Child's Urine); two doses bring peace. For critical deficiency collapse due to Yin deficiency, moxa Dan Tian (Lower Abdomen) to tonify Yang, as Yang generation promotes Yin growth. Do not rely solely on Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata); use Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) in large doses. For epidemics, only the methods in San Yin Fang (Formulas of the Three Causes) are applicable. To resolve various heat diseases, use Fen Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 5 liang, finely cut, stir-fried, pounded, mixed with good wine according to patient's tolerance, ground together, strained, taken warm. Profuse diarrhea ensues, expelling toxins. Even if extremely thirsty, do not drink water, or rescue becomes difficult. The formula for Wen Bing (Warm Disease) uses Ren Zhong Huang (Human Manure Processed) to treat epidemic heat toxicity as Sovereign; Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) to disperse depression as Ministers; Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) to descend fire; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) to tonify deficiency; Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) to benefit Qi and unblock meridians as Assistants. Heat depression causes blockage of internal/external Qi and fluids leading to dryness; Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) is bitter-cold and purges dry heat; Hua Shi (Talcum) is slippery and bland, opening orifices, resolving knots, promoting Qi/fluid flow to moisten dryness. These two act as Envoys, one Yin, one Yang. Wen Bing (Warm Disease) arises from winter cold exposure or failure to store Essence in winter, distinguishing deficiency/excess. It may stem from improper seasonal Qi stagnation or Ministerial/Fire overlords, distinguishing host/guest. With Five Movements and Six Qi shifts, if overcoming forces prevent ascending/descending, one must identify the originating Qi; can treatment uniformly apply heat-clearing methods?
